Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the community
in sustaining free primary education in Kenya.
The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the status of
education under free primary education, Identify problems in the
implementation of Free Primary Education, and to investigate the
School Funding Mechanism and Adequacy for Orphans and Vulnerable
c h id re n
The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to gather
information from teacher union leaders (KNUT), Commission officials
(TSC) and teachers.
The findings revealed that the community especially the major stake
holders had not done enough to sustain free primary education in
Kenya
The study recommended that carrying out sensitisation campaigns so
that children can gain acceptance from their family, members of the
community, school children, teachers and the school administration.
Teachers especially need to be trained on how to handle the overage
and former street children so that they don’t feel stigmatized. The
government in conjunction with the civil society should organize for
this.
