Abstract
The study assessed the governance and poverty alleviation in Mogadishu-Somalia. The
objectives of the study were to; investigate the governance effectiveness in MogadishuSomalia,
to assess the poverty condition of communities in Mogadishu-Somalia, to find
out the relationship between governance and poverty alleviation in Mogadishu-Somalia.
The research used a descriptive design, descriptive co relational, cross sectional and
survey designs. It was descriptive in that it described the characteristics of respondents
in collecting data from the study population totallingSOOOrespondents. Sampling
technique was used to select the sample of 370 respondents from Mogadishu, Somalia,
Ministry of interior affairs committee, other community members, Parliament
committee, Local government committee were interviewed. Data was analysed using
descriptive analysis option of SPSS, and was then presented using Pearson correlation.
It was found out that; it was found out that; males greatly participated in the study as
represented by 54.0% whereas 46.0% of the respondents were females; implying that
district of Hodan,Waaberi,Warta Nabadde,XamarJabjab and XamarWeyne mostly
employed males as they are known of their strong influence and ability in government
programmes compared to females. It was also found out that the task of running
schools in Somalia was initially taken up by community education committees
established in 94% of the local schools respondents (strongly agreed=4.35) "Education
is a proven fundamental base for human development, yet the PASDEP has not well
defined the details on how a mobile comrnunity can have access to education at all
levels. Still the Somali region has been trying to develop a more effective education
sector in terms of access, quality, equity, efficiency and relevance to the pastoralist
people of the region who haven't been extended education opportunities during the
previous regimes". The study recommends that poverty reduction programs must target
the poor, they must not do so benevolently. The poor need to be engaged in shaping
their own destiny through well-informed participatory politics. Among the poor, women
and children are quite often the most unheard, hence the most by-passed in policy
making and policy formulation. This is particularly so in the area of health and
education.
