Abstract
The study was set to investigate the contributions of Non-Governmental Organizations to in the socio -economic development of Mukono municipality. It was based on three research objectives which included examining the role of Non- governmental organizations in the socio-economic development, examining the challenges faced by Non-governmental organizations in the socio economic development and establishing the mechanisms for improving the performance of Nongovernmental organizations in Mukono Municipality. The study was based on descriptive design involving the use of both qualitative and quantitative research designs with the target population of 70 and a sample of 60 respondents. The study findings were that non-governmental organizations contribute to socio-economic development of Mukono municipality through rehabilitation of Vulnerable people, fighting diseases, Advocating for good governance, fight against poverty, Sensitization on health issues, Provision of education and provision of food with some respondents arguing that they are not convinced with the role of NGOs. The study further unearthed that Non-governmental organizations are faced with a series of challenges which among others included funding challenge, high cost of mobilization, Limited technical skills had, Political interference, Limited Support from local population, Lack of objectivity in establishment, Managerial problems had, Lack of clarity on organizational structures and Limited personnel to conduct activities with most respondents attributing the challenges to NGOs themselves. It was further established that that several mechanisms have been established to enhance operation of the NGOs in Mukono municipality though viewed unworkable. This prompted the researcher to seek for strategies that included targeting and strengthening access to vulnerable people, strengthening fundraising drives, incorporating the stakeholders in planning and mobilizing government support The researcher therefore made recommendations which included government should give it ample time for operation of nongovernmental organizations: all the stakeholders involved involvement, adoption of clear mechanisms of finance, establish a clear means of operations with government through following the regulations set so as to operate well with government.
