Abstract
The study was aimed at determining factors responsible for underutilization of modern family planning methods by mothers attending antenatal clinic at Kampala International University Teaching Hospital. The study was a cross sectional retrospective, descriptive study. Different variable were measured including awareness on modern contraception’s, level of knowledge of mothers on modern family planning methods, perception of mothers on modern contraception’s, availability of modern contraception’s to mothers for use and identify any cultural factors hindering the use of modern contraception. Study population was mothers attending antenatal clinic at KIU-TH. Sample size of 64 mothers were considered to be adequate representative. Data collection tools were open and close-ended questionnaires for direct interviewing, individual interviewing and focus group discussion. Study findings revealed that, 87% of mothers were aware of modern contraception methods, 23% did not know about any method. A total of 72% of the respondents were not using the methods while only 28% were using. 30 of the respondents stay 1-3km away from the health Centre while 18 of them stay <1km from the health Centre. At least 67% of the participants cannot afford the service fee to be paid for while 33% can afford the fee. Therefore, it was concluded that; there are many factors responsible for underutilization of modern family planning methods by mothers attending antenatal clinic at KIU-TH. Most of the factors can be addressed or solved by either the people themselves, health workers or the government and majority of the participants still have the intension to use the modern contraception methods in the future which is a good news and indicative of good outcome with proper implementation and intervention. The study suggested that; there is great need for education of both partners on modern contraception, its benefit, the possible side effect and how to go about incase of inconvenient side effect. The government should offer free services on modern contraception methods by providing free condom to the community, allocation of funding to training on modern family planning methods, supplying the health centers with adequate equipment and drugs for modern contraceptive purpose and lastly but very important the community should have a change in their attitude toward modern contraception.
