Abstract
The focus of the study was to find the relationship between formal education and socio-economic
status of women in Koboko district, and a case study of Koboko town council. The study was
mainly directed by three objectives which included; to assess the relationship between high
education level and socio-economic status, to examine the impact of low education level and
socio-economic status and to find out the relationship between girl child education and standard
of living.
The study had adopted a research design referred to as a correlation design which describes in
qualitative and quantitative terms where variables were related. Two sampling techniques were
used in the study to come up with sample population of 60 respondents. Where 2 were from
Koboko Town council officials, 3 were Civil Servants, 10 were business community, 5 were
nongovernmental organizations and 40 were local community. The study used instrument such
as questionnaire, interview guide, focus group discussion guide and observation checklist were
used in collecting data in an attempt to find out the relationship between formal education and
socio-economic status of women. The collected data was analyzed qualitatively using tables. The
analysis revealed that formal education have greatly improved women socio-economic status in
the community through reduction of poverty, improves health and reduction of bad traditional
beliefs and the study further have found that women still have low socio-economic status in the
community.
The government should involvement civil society organizations in policy making, monitoring
and evaluating of education programmes in the country. Furthermore, the international
community should support governments in strengthening of policies that were put in place to
help women in developing socio-economic status. Women's Education is a tool to enable
citizens to make all rounded participation in development process and Educating girls and
women is critical to achieve the benefits as well as the improvement in the areas of health,
fertility and nutrition.
