dc.description.abstractThe research project entails a study of the factors contributing to poor K.C.P.E. English performance in Kemera Zone, Manga District. The purpose of the study was to analyse the various constraints encountered in teaching English in Kemera Zone, Primary Schools is. The population from which the data was to drawn included the following: i) All the Primary Schools in Kemera Zone, Manga District. ii) All the English teachers in Primary Schools in Kemera Zone, Manga district. iii) All the Primary School students in Kemera Zone, Manga District. iv) All the Primary School head teachers in Kemera Zone, Manga District. Due to inevitable limitations that were facing the study, the researcher resulted into a stud) involving only three Primary Schools in the Zone. The researcher used the following two instruments to collect the data; i) Three different questionnaires containing forced response type items, and ii) An observation schedule in form of a checklist. The results obtained from the study indicated that lack of enough teaching resources, lack of enough qualified teachers, negative attitude towards the subject by the students, the methods used in teaching English and the students' use of Kiswahili and mother tongue most of the time in the school environment were the key factors contributing to the poor performance in English. The researcher recommended that the school administration should involve the parents and well-wishers to solicit for funds for the purpose of books and other teaching facilities. She also recommended the use of English as the sole language of communication for teachers and students in the school environment.en_US
