dc.description.abstract | This study investigated guidance & counseling and pregnancy rates in selected secondary schools of Nakasongola County, Nakasongola District. The study was based on the following research objectives: to determine the demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of gender, school status and class level; to determine the level of guidance and counseling in public and private secondary schools; to determine the rate of female students’ pregnancy in the last five years in the schools under study; and to determine whether or not there is a significant relationship between guidance and counseling and the rate of female students’ pregnancy. The study was conducted using descriptive survey and expo facto research designs. Data was collected between June and July, 2012, using questionnaires and Data was analyzed using frequency counts for the profile of the respondents and the rate of pregnancy from 2007 to 2011. The mean was used to determine the level of guidance and counseling in public and private secondary schools. Pearson’s correlation of coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the level of guidance and counseling and the rate of pregnancy among female students for the last five years. The study established that the majority of the respondents were female 65%. It also noted that the level of guidance and counseling in these schools was too low 2.46. The pregnancies among female students according to this study also indicated a very low rate of 1%. As indicated by a p-value at 0.000, less than the 0.05 level of significance, a conclusion that there was a significant relationship between guidance and counseling and pregnancy rates in selected secondary schools in Nakasongola district, was made. The null hypothesis was thus rejected and the non-directional theory by Rogers was upheld. It was recommended that secondary schools should strengthen up the guidance and counseling departments by equipping them with not only books on guidance and counseling but also with trained teachers who are well versed in matters of guidance and counseling for such teachers to give necessary guidance and counseling services to the students. | en_US |
