Abstract
This study is intended to investigate the influence of poverty on the rate of secondary school dropouts in Buzaya country. This study called upon 10 teachers whereby 2 come from each of the 5 selected schools, IO parents, 2 from a sub county and 100 students/pupils from each of the target secondary schools making up a total of 500 students and hence 520 respondents were used. Purposive sampling was the strategy that was employed. The schools were selected in such a way that each sub county is represented by at least a day and a boarding school. Simple random sampling was employed while selecting the teacher while students were sample from S.2-S.6 such that each class produced at least IO students to act as representatives. These were chosen at random from a class. The basis for choosing parents was socio-economic status. Each sub county produced at least a respondent of low socio - economic status, one of medium economic status and the other of high socio - economic status. It made use of questionnaires on teachers, which contained structured questions calling for open responses. Interview schedules/ guides were applicable for the two categories who could not proficiently read and write - the students and parents. The interview schedules were structured and open ended. Findings revealed that availability of financial resources significantly influences secondary school dropouts rate in Buzaya county or other, lack of financial resources increases the rate of secondary school drop outs. Much as this factor was considered by the students and the researcher to influence (significantly increases) the rate of secondary school dropouts, findings from teachers and parents in Buzaya county put them in disagreement with the overall study findings. Not only did the teachers and parents disagree with objective two but they also rejected objectives three, saying that neglect of parents has no significant influence on the secondary school dropout rate ( does not increase or decrease the rate). Fortunately, the students' opinion agreed with that of the researcher who proposed that child abuse heightens the rate of secondary school dropouts in Buzaya County. In general, poverty, which engulfs all the above factors, was_noted to be a pain in the neck of many Ugandans living in areas with characteristics features similar to those of Buzaya County as it heightens the rate of secondary school dropouts. With a view in mind that poverty influences (increases) the rate of secondary school dropouts and discussed in chapter five, the researcher made the following recommendations some measures to be taken towards poverty alleviation and eradication of ignorance through sensitization of the masses. This is not only the duty of the Government of Uganda but also the duty or efforts of teachers, parents, students and the society at large.
