Abstract
This study was mainly carried out to establish the link between the school entry age and academic performance of learners in Sibilo Zone of North Baringo District, Kenya. The study was necessitated by the continuous low academic performance of learners within the Zone. This problem has continued despite the much effort put by teachers to change the scenario. The objectives of the study were to; (i) to determine the profile of the respondents as regards to socio demographic data as to age. Academic, professional qualification and teaching experience. (ii) To establish the performance of learners at different classes and their respective age. (iii) To identify challenges faced by teachers in handling learners who attend school at later age. (iv) To determine the relationship between school entry age and academic performance of learners. The study employed the descriptive survey method whereby information was sourced through the use of questionnaire and the respondents were teachers. A total of thirty two class teachers from four primary schools participated in the study. Researcher's devised Instruments were used to obtained information. This is because of the questionnaires value of allowing the researcher to cover a large population within a short time. Findings of the study revealed that most of the teachers in Sibilo Zone are aged between 30 years and 45 years and majority are PI by their professional qualification. The study also showed that majority of the learners in the Zone attends school long after the internationally recommended age and that this has affected their academic performance. From the study. It was concluded that school entry age influences the academic performance of learners. Finally the researcher recommended policy makers, teachers and parents to work together to ensure that learners attend school at the appropriate age to ensure smooth transition.
