Abstract
This study was entitled teacher competence and the teaching of listening skill in Lower
secondary schools, Kabwohe_Itefldero Town council, Sheerna district
The purpose of this study was to find out whether teachers’ competence really influences the
teaching of the listening skill in English language in lower secondary schools, to what extent the
teachers’ competence does affect the teaching of the listening skill in English language. The
research gave suggestions and recommendations on how the teaching of the listening skill in
English language in lower secondary can he improved. It was guided by three objectives which
were directed to the general objective as to find out whether teachers’ competence really
influences the teaching of the listening skill in English language in lower secondary schools. The
study was mainly descriptive therefore it used qualitative methods. It also used quantitative
methods to calculate and present the figures so as to obtain related endings. The study targeted
the teachers of English in SI and S2, head teachers and selected students of SI and S2 all from
the identified secondary schools. A sample size of 30 respondents was relied upon to get the
available and related data. Interviewing and surveying were basically used to collect data. The
study found out that teachers’ competence really influences the teaching of the listening skills in
English language in lower secondary school. For example, it was found out that competent
teachers believe that listening is a fundamental English language skill, competent teachers
identify the difficulties associated with the teaching of the listening skill which positively
influence the teaching of the listening skill, and competent teachers help the learners to
distinguish sounds which is important for controlled listening exercises among others.The study
found out that to the large extent. the teachers’ competence affects the teaching of the listening
skill in English language. The study also found out the ways in which the teaching of the
listening skills in English language in lower secondary schools can be improved, for example
through active and critical listening. learning English pronunciation rules, watching videos or
listening to audios in English among others.
