Abstract
The study covered the gender roles as portrayed in Ankole marriage songs with Ankole region as the case study. It was propelled by the desire to find out the gender stereotypes as portrayed in these songs especially of the female gender. The study indicated that women are seen to be properties of men, patriarchy is more pronounced in the Ankole marriage songs and women occupy a less significant part in Ankole because they only live in the shadows of men. As a way forward it has been recommended that further studies on the same subject should aim at ending the unrealistic portrayal of women. The portrayal of women is largely biased, women perform more than what has been presented but unfortunately their chores are not usually brought into the lime light in a society that cherishes male chauvinism and dominance
