Descriptive Epidemiology And Determinants Of Pre Diabetes Among Adults Attending Mityana General Referral Hospital; A Cross Sectional Study

| dc.description.abstract | Background: Pre-diabetes is silent transition stage of diabetes marked by abnormally high glycaemia but below the threshold for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. However our health care system does not routinely screen for pre-diabetes thus this condition often escalates to diabetes and its associated public health menace in many people who would otherwise be prevented. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the Descriptive epidemiology and Determinant of Pre-diabetes among adults attending Mityana General Referral Hospital. Methodology: A hospital based cross sectional study that enrolled 365 adults aged 18 – 59years was conducted at Mityana General Referral Hospital, Mityana, central region 2 Uganda in September 2023. Eligible participants were enrolled consecutively and data was collected using a pretested interviewer administered structured questionnaire. Blood sample was collected from eligible participants to test HBA1C using Finecare HBA1C analyzer and diagnosis of pre-diabetes as per ADA criteria (HBA1c = 5.7 – 6.4%). Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 and a statistical significant association of P ≤ 0.05 was considered. Results: The study showed that the mean (±SD) of HBA1c of studied adults was 5.1 (±0.9) % and prevalence of pre-diabetes was 13.4% among adults. Pre-diabetes was more (23.1%) in adults aged 40 – 59years, female adults (24.6%) and those with no formal education (2.0%). At multivariate analysis, the study revealed that male adults (aOR = 0.26, 95% CI; 0.91 – 0.75) and those who serve fruits on meals (aOR = 0.28, 95%CI; 0.09 – 0.91) were protected against Pre-diabetes (OR < 1) compared to their counter parts. However, history of COVID-19 (aOR =, taking fizzy or soft drinks (OR = 2.59, 95% CI; 1.01 – 6.64), and Tobacco Smoking (aOR = 3.52, 95% CI; 1.24 – 10.03) were associated positively (OR > 1) with Pre-diabetes among studied adults. Conclusion: The prevalence of pre-diabetes was high among adults in Mityana as compared to that of Eastern and South western region. Pre-diabetes was more in adults aged 40 – 59 years, female adults and those with no formal education. Pre-diabetes was significantly predisposed by Family history of diabetes, history of COVID-19, taking fizzy or soft drinks and Tobacco smoking. However, young age < 40years, male sex, eating or serving fruits on meals, and having a low or normal Waist to Hip Ration (WHR) were protective against pre-diabetes. | |
