Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine the role of alcohol on the increase of HIV prevalence rate in Katwe suburb Kampala. The study was guided by three specific objectives and these included; to examine the factors contributing to increasing rates of drug abuse among youths Makindye Division, to examine the impact of alcohol in Katwe suburb Kampala, and to establish the relationship between alcohol consumption and HIV prevalence rate in Katwe suburb. Kampala district. The study employed a case study design in its methodology and sample size of 70 respondents was employed in the study. The study used in-depth interview guide and questionnaires in its data collection. From the study findings, it was revealed that majority of the respondents 57% said alcohol contributes to aggressive behaviors, 14% said alcohol leads them to poor reasoning, 21% said out of control, while 7% of the respondents said poor judgments majority of the respondents 57% said yes while the minority number of respondents 43% said No. this therefore means that respondents in Katwe suburb were aware of the contribution of alcohol on the prevalence, when respondents were asked about the describe behaviors after taking alcohol, majority of the respondents said that they feel aggressed,21% said rape,29% said multiple partners while 14% of the respondents said unprotected sexual intercourse, when respondents were asked about the describe behaviors after taking alcohol, majority of the respondents said that they feel aggressed,2 I % said rape,29% said multiple partners while 1 4% of the respondents said unprotected sexual intercourse, majority of the respondents 86% of the respondents said yes while the minority of the respondents 14% said no. this therefore means that respondents in Katwe suburb are able to say no to sex after taking alcohol. there is a strong negative relationship between Alcohol consumption and at I-IIV prevalence regression (r) = - 0.702 and at level of significance 0.05. The study recommended that Family Intervention Projects (FlPs) provide intensive support to turn around the most chaotic and dysfunctional younger people who have complex needs. They target families who are at risk of eviction due to their persistent anti-social behavior, or where there is a child identified as being at risk of offending. The community should create and promote alcohol-free events for youths, support youth clubs and organizations that are substance-free, create and promote service learning and volunteer opportunities, require community service work as part of the academic curriculum and promote consumption of non alcoholic beverages and food at events.
