Parental neglect and secondary school drop Out: a case study of Namutumba District

Abstract
The study was carried out in Bugobi High school in Namutumba district to examine parental, student and school related factors as causes of parental neglect and secondary school dropout. The objectives of this research were to determine family related factors (parental neglect factors) that contribute to dropping out of secondary school, to source out individual (student) related factors that lead to parental neglect and eventually dropping out of school and to come up with school related factors that contribute to parental neglect and student dropouts from secondary school. The study used a descriptive survey to get the relationship between school, family and student related factors all independent variables) and school dropout (a dependent variable) as perceived by the students, teachers and parents. The population of study included purposively randomly selected 1 0 dropout and 10 currently enrolling students respectively, 10 parents and 10 teachers. Form three students were selected instead of florm ones and twos because the researcher assumed that these students have acquired valuable experiences oncerning the factdrs that predispose students into dropping out, )ata was collected from both primary and secondary sources using questionnaires, interviews and focus ~roup discussion. This was then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in themes that reflect the study )bjectives. lie flndings indicated that parents’ education background, poverty, alcohol and parental attitude are causal actors contributing to parental neglect and secondary school dropout while students related factors that aused parental neglect and eventual school dropout included; indiscipline, distance to school, poor erfbrmance and pregnancy. In addition to these, research revealed that corporal punishment, poor school performance, poor school administration and suspension/expulsion from school were school/teacher related actors that caused parental neglect and secondary school dropout. A result of these findings, the following recommendations were made; the government and other stake older in education sector should seek to increase the funding for USE to cater for all the school monitory ~requirements in order to cushion students from poor economic background from dropping out of school and ~view the effectiveness of sex education being offered in secondary schools. This is with aviator enhance to sensitize the students on the negative effects of engaging in sexual activities prematurely.
