Abstract
This study focused on establishing the relationship between reward and employee performance in the
selected government institutions of Kabarole District. The study was based on the following
objectives: i) to establish the relevance of reward systems on the employee performance in the local
government institutions of Kabarole District, ii) examine the reward practices used in Kabarole
District local government institutions, iii) to determine the level of employee performance and the
indicators in the selected local government institutions of Kabarole District, iv) to find out ifthere is
any significant relationship between reward and employee performance in local government
institutions of Kabarole District.
The study employed descriptive correlational design; data was collected using researcher generated
questionnaires and an interview schedule. The researcher also used the purposive, judgemental and
stratified simple random sampling to select the respondents. The Cronbach's coefficient Alpha was
used to analyse the reliability of the data collection instrument. Pearson correlation (r) was used to
es tab I ish the relationship between reward and performance in the selected public and private
institutions in Kabarole District.
In regard to age groups, majority 49.7% of the respondents lied in the category of 30-39 years
compared to other categories with most of them being male (64.2%). Also majority of the respondents,
57% were married and lied in the elites group of Bachelors degree level (49.4%). From the study
results, the level of reward implementation was revealed to be very satisfactory with an average mean
4.19. On the relevance of fringe benefits and bonuses, the research revealed satisfactory results with an
average mean of 3.66. About the reward practices (promotions, Appreciation, empowerment,
delegation and recognition) on the performance of workers in the selected government institutions, the
results revealed an average mean of 4.23 interpreted as very satisfactory. In regard to the level of
performance and its indicators, the study finding revealed an average mean of 4.05, meaning it was
very satisfactory. These results revealed a positive and strong relationship between reward and
performance in a work place (r = 0.910**, Sig.= 0.000) meaning that performance is very much linked
to the reward systems. This is supported by the regression analysis that revealed a very significant
relationsh ip (Sig. 0.000) between reward and performance at a 99% level of significance implying that
without rewards in public and private in~titutions, performance is at risk. The researcher therefore
conclude that there is a significant relationship between reward and performance of employees arguing
that for any improvement to be realized, Kabarole District Local government needed to improve on its
reward system .
