Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between poverty and school drop out in Ggaba Parish between 2005 and 2007 The study was guided by the following objectives, examining the economic status of parents aided schools to accommodate their environments and suggesting possible solutions to poverty and school dropout. The study was carried out against the background that despite the introduction of free education through UPE and USE where education is free for all over 30% of every annual enrollment at both primary and secondary school levels still drop out of school. This becomes worse in private schools where parents have to provide every scholastic requirement needed for a learner to stay in school. The reasons for dropping out are related to lack of scholastic requirements due to poverty of parents and schools. The research design of the involved cross survey and cross sectional studies where data were sought using quantitative and qualitative designs to seek prin1ary data and documentary review to gather secondary data. A sample population of 120 respondents consisting of 20 teachers, 40 parents, and 60 pupils/students were used from the four schools of study. These were Ggaba Demonstration Primary School (GDPS) and St Denis Ssebugvvawo Secondary School (SDSS) which are government aided schools, Maranatha Christian Prin=y School (MCPS) and Maranatha Christian Secondary School which are private schools but learners are sponsored by ARMS (African Renewal Ministries) an American based organization for African Poor and Disadvantage Children. The findings of the study revealed that, unemployment, inadequate skills, inadequate capitai lack of inadequate investments, large families, family neglect, AIDS/orpl1a11S are the n1ajor causes of poverty to parents. It was established that family immediate problems, family background and school related to poverty. The government aided schools were found to have failed to accommodate and maintain their enrollments because of insufficient and poor structures/facilities, insufficient funding, insufficient teaching staff, poor welfare services, failure to feed learners and having improperly trained teachers. The solutions to poverty and school dropout were suggested to be setting up of self-sustaining projects by parents, giving welfare allowances to teachers, closer cooperation between teachers and parents, facilitating disabled learners, government extra increased pay, use of alternative learning materials, preserving the available materials in schools, constructing more new and permanent structures such as classrooms and improving on the teaching techniques.
