| dc.description.abstract | The research to investigate the challenges faced in the management of human excreta was conducted in Bariadi town council authority. The overall objective was to assess the challenges experienced in human excreta management and disposal within the communities of Bariadi town council. The study used a sample population of 120 respondents; 4.8% males and 52.2% females who were selected randomly from the population. Both qualitative and quantitative designs methods were employed in data collection and analysis. As a result cases of lack of excreta disposal facilities, unaffordable and/or unsustainable use of flash toilets instead of cheap water cans for washing hands after using a latrine, about 41.1% of the in habitants in Bariadi town council had no suitable excreta disposal facilities or if any, these are communal latrines/ toilets, which seemed to be dangerous and un healthy for vulnerable groups such as the children (young) and women. Also the findings revealed that traditions, beliefs and cultures large influenced the way of life people live and could determine the frequency of excretion/ faecal composition or the type of solid wastes generated by a homestead/ hamlet. The main challenge was the lack of provision of sufficient excreta disposal facilities or technologies to the Bariadi town council inhabitants. Lack of or misuse of funds directed to sanitation promotion programs was another challenge to the leaders. In conclusion, Bariadi town council should take on or fulfill the mandate to oversee the standards and performances of water supply, sanitation hygiene, solid waste management and the general well being of the town communities. The researcher recommends the use of cheap but means of ensuring improved sanitation and hygiene/excreta or sewage facilities as well as Institutional learning on sewage management. | en_US |
