- ItemChallenges limiting efforts to establish peace, stability and a functioning government in Somalia(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2009-10) Mohamed, Abdirahman; MohamudThe purpose of this study was to investigate the obstacles to peace and stability in Somalia. Hence it examined the root of Somali conflict, the challenges to peace and stability in Somalia and the way forward. In gathering information the research study employed both pnmary and secondary sources. The primary sources were mainly the distributed questionnaire and the secondary sources were the literature work and internet. This study used cross-sectional survey as its research design; the data were collected purposely from Growe city. However, in selecting the respondents cluster random sampling was used. Three hundred seventy eight in six categories were selected to make sample population. The tables' charts were used in organizing the data and both qualitative and quantitative was the technique employed in analysing the collected data. From the finding of the study it was revealed that the origin of Somali conflict were competition for power and resources, repression of the former dictatorship Siad Bare and colonial legacy. The findings futiher indicate that there are external and internal challenges to peace and stability in Somalia. And from the previous peace agreement the role of tradition leaders in resolving the conflict were ignored. The study recommended that the external actors should stop their intervention in the Somali internal affaires. Further more, to provide the traditional leaders and clan leaders a good atmosphere through which they could come up with the way forward to solve these conflicts.
- ItemGovernance and Clan Conflicts on the Socio-Economic Development in Baidoa District Somalia(Kampala International University, Colleges of humanities and social sciences, 2014-11) Mohamed, AbdirahmanThis study was undertaken to carry out an investigation on governance and clan conflicts containment in Baidoa. Somalia. The objectives of the study were To determine the effectiveness of governance structures in Somalia, to determine the causes of ethnic conflicts in Somalia and to determine the significant relationship between governance and the clan conflicts in Somalia. The study employed descriptive correlation study design which involved both qualitative and quantitative approaches. With regards to this method, the researcher used structured questionnaires which were based on simple and understandable questions. Responses from the 1 04 sample size respondents out of a total of 140 respondents suggested that the governance in Baidoa was relatively poor than the standard expected. The researcher found out that though some strides have been made in improvement of the governance policies; still there are a couple of challenges which hampered the process of containing clan conflicts. Other than governance, under development poverty, uneven power and weak institution were some of the major causes of clan conflicts in Baidoa district. As a result the process of containing and preventing clan conflicts has remained to be elusive. It was also established that there was indeed a causal relationship between governance and clan conflicts containment which stood at 0.965 on the Pearson Correlation scale which was interpreted as a significant positive and very strong relationship. The researcher suggested that it had become imperative that there be significant improvement on the aspects by means of revising the job social, political and economic governance of Baidoa. This according to the researcher would help improve the process of preventing and containing the clan conflicts in Baidoa district.
