- ItemAn assessment of degree of service quality of some selected commercial banks in central Uganda ; perception of bank customers.(ESRSA Publications Pvt ltd, 2013) Burani, Aluonzi; Sunday, Arthur; Turyahebwa, Abanis; Byamukama, Eliab; Sumil, ManuelThis study was concerned with the assessment of degree of service quality provided by some selected commercial banks in central Uganda. The objectives of the study were to determine (i) demographic profiles (ii) degree of service quality and (iii) significant differences between services provided by the selected commercial banks. The study employed ex post facto design, cross sectional survey, correlation design and quantitative paradigm. Self-Administered Questionnaires were used with CVI = 0.85 and reliability of r = 0.95 obtained using cronbach alpha method. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The major findings included male being majority (52%) and female 48%. In terms of age group of (20-39); obtained 81% and 60 and above were 3%. Diploma holders were 32% and Ph.D holders were 1%. UBA customers being majority (58%) and Global Trust Bank score 42%. In terms of determining the degree of service quality in selected commercial banks in central Uganda, the responsiveness, competence, credibility, security, accessibility and understanding of the service were rated successful apart from reliability of the service which was rated was fair meaning not reliable. With t value = 2.401 and sig or p = 0.017 at 0.05 level of significance alternative hypothesis was accepted to the effect that there is a significant difference in degree of service quality as perceived by customers of the two selected Commercial Banks in Central Uganda. The study recommended the banks to change customer perception and win the good will from the customers, the staff should endeavor to provide the service promptly, quickly and accurately and the service provider should have alternative power to enable the service provider work 24 hours.
- ItemChild Soldier Scenario and Children’s Protection Within Armed Conflicts: A Positivist’s View(Academic Affairs Directorate, Kampala International University (KIU), Uganda, East Africa Institute for Social Research, KIU, 2017-08) Cephus, Diggs; Sumil, Novembrieta; Otanga, Rusoke; Sumil, Manuel; Hassan, Abdulle Hassan; Mwebesa, EdsonThis study underscored a positivist’s philosophical stand referring to the status of children as soldiers and children’s protection within armed conflict situations from 2013 in Juba, Central Equatoria State, South Sudan utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data and retrospective-prospective designs as research strategies. The quantitative data on child soldier scenario and children’s protection within the armed conflict zones from 362 respondents (20-39 years of age) who had lived in Juba for over 7 years were elicited using validated and tested for reliability researcher structured questionnaires with open and close-ended questions. Record sheets reflected qualitative data from incident reports. The collection of data was matched with follow-up interviews and document analysis. The study employed three sampling techniques namely: stratified sampling, purposive sampling and simple random sampling. The responses on child soldier scenario were in these aspects: under the age of 10 when forced to serve as soldiers; the children volunteered themselves because of societal pressure and were under the impression that volunteering will provide a form of income, food, or security; child soldier recruitment breaking several human rights laws; poor and displaced from their families child soldiers had limited access to education and girl child soldiers were used for fighting and other purposes and were vulnerable to sexual violence. While the data on children’s protection conspicuously were in these concerns: accommodation, reintegration strategy, legal aspect, parental care and family life, health facilities and forced marriage. The findings implied peace and conflict resolutions by the relevant peace experts and security contingents.

This cannot be said for well-being and life threatening issues, whose implications run very deeply indeed in employees mind, body and soul. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in psychological well-being between counseled and non-counseled employees. The study utilized a comparative research and the population comprised of counseled and non-counseled employees of Uganda Police Force (Nsambya Barracks). The purposive sampling strategy was used to select 141 respondents of whom 66 were non-counseled and 75 were counseled employees. Questionnaires were used to collect data with acceptable validity and reliability results at 0.89 and 0.93 respectively. The t-test was used to establish a comparison in psychological well-being between counseled and non-counseled employees. The results indicated that there was a significant difference in psychological well-being between counseled and non-counseled employees (t=6.543, p< 0.05). It was recommended that employers should recognize the need to provide professional counseling services to employees because this will improve employees’ psychological well-being.

Human development, the main sustainable development goal can emanate from product differentiation. Access to education is a sustainable development strategy that can improve quality of life. A differentiated tuition fee system is thought to be one of the approaches to improve people’s quality of life. Anchored on the monopolistic price discrimination theory (third degree), this paper examined the costs and benefits derived from a differentiated tuition fee system in selected Ugandan universities. To achieve this, a descriptive correlation approach and mixed explanatory designs (quantitative and qualitative) were adopted. The study found tuition fee differentiation system to have a significant correlation with benefits accrued and an insignificant correlation with costs involved.

The data were elicited through the ex post facto and prospective designs on specific type of parenting style under the parenting dimensions the father and mother were practicing as experienced by 322 students selected through purposive sampling and stratified random sampling by proportional allocation from multisite nursing schools in Cebu City, Philippines. The findings of the study revealed as follows: (1) the parents practiced a combination of the three parenting styles namely, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive; (2) the indifferent style was less experienced by the respondents; (3) the authoritative style of parenting appeared to be the most dominant.

The evidence-based data on job related extrinsic facets or Herzberg’s hygiene factors were elicited specifically on school policy and administration, salary, job security, work condition, status/position and relationship with superiors from a scientifically computed sample size of 94 faculty members. These qualified respondents were selected through stratified random sampling by proportional allocation. The findings of the study revealed the following: the teacher respondents were not dissatisfied with the hygiene factors on status, work conditions and relationship with superiors while they were dissatisfied with the factors on school policy and administration, salary and job security. The empirical findings on the hygiene factors were interconnected with Maslow’s lower order needs however, there were some indices within the hygiene factors of status, work conditions, relationship with superiors, school policy and administration that were motivators linked with the higher order needs of Maslow. An executive development program was accentuated in this study to address the causes of dissatisfaction and illuminate insights into aspects to which managers can improve the motivation and satisfaction of their employees.

The findings revealed that the multi-pronged approaches consisting of health information campaign, lectures on hygiene and sanitation, food workshops, health education seminars, physical interaction of the residents with health professionals decreased malnutrition, maternal and infant mortality rate shaped the residents’ beliefs towards preparing nutritious foods, healthy way of life and enhancement of social interactions.
- ItemManagerial skills and success of small scale enterprises in Kampala Uganda: presented at the Canadian International Conference on Advances in Computer Science, Humanities and Education, April 1-2, 2015, Dubai, UAE(2015) Kibuuka, Muhammad; Sumil, Novembrieta; Byamukama, Eliab Mpora; Tindyebwa, Wilberforce; Kazibwe, Sophia; Sumil, Manuel; Ssemugenyi, FredA multi-sector coverage of small-scale enterprises was explored to address these objectives: (1) extent to which managerial skills were possessed; (2) extent to which small-scale entrepreneurs (SSEs) were successful; (3) relationship between managerial skills and success. Employed as strategies to elicit data were descriptive correlation and ex-post facto designs; administration of validated and tested for reliability researcher devised questionnaires; frequencies, means, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient and regression analysis. The findings showed moderate extent of managerial skills (conceptual, human and technical); Kampala SSEs were less successful internally and more successful externally; managerial skills possessed positively and significantly correlated with internal and external success; conceptual and technical skills significantly predicted small-scale entrepreneurs’ success. Technical and conceptual skills need to be more promoted through entrepreneurial and business skills in universities; education of among SSEs on formation of joint ventures and ongoing training programs for skills development.
- ItemPrimary Health Care Services Delivery (PHCSD) Under Revenue Autonomy: Proposed Innovative Options Within Own Source Revenue(Academic Affairs Directorate, Kampala International University (KIU), Uganda, East Africa Institute for Social Research, KIU, 2017-08) Hassan, Abdulle Hassan; Sumil, Novembrieta; Sumil, Manuel; Mwebesa, Edson; Cephus, DiggsThrough quantitative and qualitative account (mixed explanatory method), this empirical investigation portrayed a pragmatic perspective of the primary health care services in Mbale District, Uganda under the fiscal decentralization with revenue autonomy in particular. The evidence based data were elicited from the respondents selected through purposive sampling utilizing a researcher devised research tool tested scientifically for its validity and reliability. Quantitative measurements consisted of means and standard deviations elucidated by qualitative data from observations and interviews. The constructs of primary health care services under study were as follows: public education, maternal and child health care, proper nutrition, provision of accessible treatment and drugs, clean water and sanitation, immunization and local diseases control, accountability in service delivery. The general findings revealed existing challenges and gaps in these indicators. Therefore, this study advocated the need for improvement of health services delivery outcomes in rural and remote communities through improved access to health services while this study also recommended that progress can be made by reflecting on enhancing service access through the wider implementation of innovative options proposed in this study.
- ItemQuantitative account of the business milieu and interplay with organismic variables based on multi-site empirical studies in Uganda, East Africa: accepted and approved for oral presentation at the 2015 Fall Global Mindset on Leadership and Management Conference, September 11-13, Los Angeles, California, USA.(2015) Sumil, Novembrieta; Sumil, Manuel; Kibuuka, Muhammad; Ssekajugo, DerickThe business milieu in terms of business management, conditions, practices and their interactions with certain organismic variables were determined through a meta-analysis of evidence-based data sorted out from 153 studies conducted in these selected business sectors: small and medium enterprises, local private and public banks, non traditional export enterprises, multinational companies, savings and credit cooperatives, telecommunication companies, public and private organizations and microfinance institutions in Central and Eastern Uganda. The new analyses revealed an overall picture of the business milieu in three aspects: (1) business management (from highest to lowest in rank: managerial skills, internal control system, credit management, management accounting, working capital management and corporate governance monitoring mechanisms); (2) business conditions from highest to lowest in rank: business expansion/growth of the business, innovation, business success, financial sustainability of microfinance institutions, business competitiveness, employee productivity, business behavior, employees’ performance, financial sustainability of savings and credit cooperatives and internationalization: (3) business practices such as accounting quality and auditing standards compliance. A correlation profile data between the business milieu dimensions displayed significant relationships while the organismic variables proved its efficacy with the business milieu constructs. The study followed a quantitative research paradigm which was particularly descriptive, longitudinal panel research. It was found out that the trend of U5MR was generally declining and that there was a significant difference between the U5MR of male and female children. The 2013 annual average reduction rate (AARR) was 4.3%, just 0.1% less than the required 4.4% for Uganda to achieve Millennium Development Goal 4. Based on the findings, it was concluded that there exists higher chances for Uganda to achieve the MDG4, considering the recent trend of U5MR in Uganda.
