    The impact of school feeding program in Odupi SubCounty, Arua District

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of school feeding programs in Odupi Sub-county in Arua District. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the school attendance of schools where there is school t~ed~n~ programs, to establish the level of development of children in schools where feeding programs are found and to find out the effects of feeding programs on the education of pupils in Odupi sub-county. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires to the teachers who were involved in this study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characzer~s:ics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that feeding programs enhanced the performance ofpupils in Odupi sub-county. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted.The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to Develop targetingcriteria and mechanisms that concentrate program resources on high risk children and communities, among other recommendations.

    Facts and factors influencing performance of science subjects in Kenya schools case study of physics performance in Mirira Secondary School, In Muranga District

    This research is a case study designed to investigate the factors affecting student's performance in physics at Mirira secondary School in Kiharu Division, Murang'a District, in Central Province. The principle objective of this study was to look at the factors that influence student's poor performance in Mirira Secondary School. The results of this research will therefore fill the knowledge gaps on factors influencing achievement in physics which can also be a guide towards the other science subjects. The targeted population was made up of 356 students, teachers and the supporting staff. The sample used was made up of 50 students three physics teachers and the school principal. Three questionnaires were designed, one for the students, one for the physics teachers and the other one for the principal. The questionnaires seeked information on student's attitude towards physics, availability of laboratory equipments, textbook ratio, teachers' workload, and methods of evaluation. A descriptive analysis was used to analyse the data from the three groups of the respondents. Research findings indicates that students in Mirira Secondary School have a negative attitudes towards physics, the school laboratory is not adequately equipped, physics textbooks ratio is inadequate, physics teachers are overburdened through loading, and the school lack a well monitored policy of evaluation. All these could have a bearing in determining the poor performance of physics in the school. Career guidance, practical oriented teaching methods, fieldtrips, science clubs, giving students easy tasks and good preparation of physics teachers can be used to change the negative attitudes of the students towards physics. To provide adequate laboratory facilities more funds need to be allocated in school budgets, organize fund raising, borrowing essential equipments from the neighbouring schools and improvisation can ease the problem oflaboratory equipments. School library, school priorities, and fund raising or donations can solve the problem of textbook ratios. Teachers service commission or intervention of Board of Governors can solve the problem of teachers' load. Finally the school should develop a well monitored evaluation policy under an internally appointed dean of studies.

    Block mechanism and pupil’s academic performance in schools: case study of Kitumui primary/secondary school

    This paper gives the results of a survey and evaluation of the Free Primary Education (FPE) program in Kenya. The FPE program started in January 2003 when a new government came to power after a general election. This was a fulfillment of one of the government's election promises. The FPE program is implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MO EST) through Direct Support System. This is a system whereby the government, through the ministry gives direct financial support to primary schools through a block grant. The grant is based on pupil numbers (enrollment). Each pupil is allocated the same amount of funds per year. The allocation per pupil is then supposed to be spent on various learning materials based on guidelines spelt out by the ministry. The survey findings indicate that in overall, the FPE program has been well received, and has generally met the overall objective of increasing pupil enrollment rates. However, its implementation has run into various challenges over the last three years. These challenges include: shortage of teachers and classrooms inadequacy of the funds general lack of management skills by the head teachers to administer the program effectively a general decrease in education standards due to a combination of the above and other factors, especially shortage of teachers. In addition, economic conditions, and especially poverty, are working against the program. This is because poor parents can still not afford to send their children to school due to the lack of other resources such as food and uniforms.

    The influence of School Drop Out on the Academic Performance of Learners: Case Study of Emuhaya District Of Kenya

    The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of school drop out on academic performance of learners. The objectives were to establish the relationship between school drop out and academic performance of learners. The study also examined the causes of school drop out among learners. The study used across -sectional survey design to analyze both quantitative and qualitative. The researcher collected data from 3 schools with a population of 150 respondents. The researcher used a questionnaire instrument, observation and interview guide to collect data. The findings indicated that majority of the learners drop out of schools due to poverty, family breakdown, hunger, bad school experience, peer influence and diseases. The findings also indicated that learners who drop out of school come from divorced families and single headed families which greatly contribute to school drop out. The study recommended the government of Kenya to emphasize on free primary education and to support the learners from very poor families with _basic need such as food etc. The schools should also support learners with necessary reading materials such books to enable their stay in schools.

    Effects of late entry to school on the academic performance of learner: case study of selected primary schools in Sacho zone, Baringo district of Kenya

    The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of late entry and learner academic performance of learners. The objectives were to establish the relationship between school late entry and academic performance of learners. The study also examined the challenges faced by teachers in handling learners who attend school at later age. The study used across -sectional survey design to analyze both quantitative and qualitative. The researcher collected data from 3 schools with a population of 200 respondents. The researcher used a questionnaire instrument, observation and interview guide to collect data. The findings indicated that majority of the learners are faced with the problem of late school entry which has greatly affected their academic performance. The findings also indicated that learners who enter school late are faced with low self esteem, low commitment, poor attitude and poor academic. The study recommended the government of Kenya to encourage learners to join school early through providing free education. The parents school should take their children to schools as early as 6 years to avoid late entry to school.

    Impact of financial resources on academic performance of students in secondary schools within Mandera central, North Eastern Kenya

    This study was carried out within Mandera Central which is located in Nairobi North - district of Kenya. To come up with this study, the researcher had to be driven by the cardinal (general) objective formulated prior to data gathering and this had been stated as: This study is intended to investigate the influence of financial resources on the academic performance of students in secondary schools within Mandera Central in North Eastern Kenya. It is from such an objective that the researcher generated the general research question and this aimed at realizing the intentions of the study. The study employed a descriptive survey design since the whole study was about explaining a scenario or an event. The findings from the study revealed that inadequate financial resources, low student-teacher ratio, poor structures in schools and inadequate teaching learning aids among others were a major impediment to the progress of learners in schools and hence affecting their performance. Measures suggested to address such a problem included; provision of more learning aids and improvement on school structures, increasing teachers' salaries and granting more teachers to schools that are lacking staff- all of which necessitated increased government funding.

    The impact of guidance and counseling on the behavior of girl in primaryschools in kigumba sub county kiryandongo district

    The study of this report is about the effects of counseling and guidance on behaviors of girls in primary schools in Kigumba Sub County, Kiryandongo district. It is directed by the following specific objectives; to identify the problems facing girls in primary schools, to investigate whether there is guidance and counseling in primary schools, and identify effects of guidance and counseling in primary schools. The study was descriptive where stratified sampling was used to select population. It employed a total sample of 50 respondents as indicated in chapter four. Data were analyzed and presented using statistical methods of data presentation where percentages were integrated into tables. It was found out that the problems were lack of self confidence, external barriers, parental influences, issues relating to teachers, personality factor, loss of relief and isolation. Among the recommendation given are: provision of scholastic materials, increase in teachers' remuneration, provision of lunch by schools, complete and clear curriculum, and need to sensitize the community
