- ItemAlcoholism and Its effects on Family Development in Uganda; A case study of Nankulabye Suburb, Kampala.(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences., 2013-07) Kaseesa, FauzThis study presents the findings on the effect of alcoholism in family development. The methodology was of a qualitative study which was comprised 30 focus groups exploring the knowledge, attitudes and practices of adolescents (15-17), young people (18-24 years of age) and adults (25-35) towards alcohol in NanKulabwe in Kampala. The study was aimed at finding out the knowledge, attitudes and practices of participants in relation to alcohol use and abuse; identifying drivers of alcohol use and abuse; explore the linkages between gender norms and alcohol use; finding out the linkages between alcohol abuse and risky sexual behaviour and establish; assessing the roles of existing social support structures and institutions that influence behaviour in relation to alcohol abuse and exploring perceptions about norms surrounding alcohol consumption. Study participants were aware that alcohol could either be drank in moderation or excessively to constitute abuse. Moderate use of alcohol was associated with the ability to control one’s self after drinking, to carry on one’s work and domestic responsibilities and to know when to stop drinking. The control over their use of alcohol and who display inappropriate behaviour are considered to be abusers of alcohol. Generally, participants considered drinking behaviour that has a profound negative impact on the individual and the surrounding environment including friends and family to be abuse. Alcohol abuse was generally associated with the failure to control one’s behaviour after drinking alcohol. Study participants demonstrated some awareness of the short term and long-term problems associated with excessive alcohol use, but did not attribute negative consequences to moderate alcohol use. They were fully aware that excessive alcohol use could have a detrimental impact on an individual’s health and quality of life.
- ItemAlcoholism and risky sexual behaviours among youths at Kasensero landing site - Rakai District(Kampala International University. College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2017-09) Eremmigious; Balikuddembe, EremmigiousAssessment of the contribution of alcohol consumption and risky sexual behaviors on Kasensero landing site Rakai district. The research was done in April 2017 for two weeks and it was carried out in Kasensero landing site that is found in Kyebe County in Rakai district. This research was basically done to determine the relevant solutions and recommendations that can be put in place to reduce alcohol consumption and its negative effects towards the village. This research, still, was done to determine the relationship of alcohol consumption and risky sexual behaviors in Kasensero landing site. A cross sectional method was used and data was collected using questionnaires, interview guides and FGDs. Respondents could give their information according to the questions posed to them as indicated in the appendices.The data collected, indicated that a bigger percentage of 56% among the 476 respondents that were chosen in Kasensero landing site take alcohol. Some of the respondents agreed that alcohol consumption—to some extent, contributes HIV/AIDS transmission and some of them never supported it though they did not have genuine reasons as to they agree and do not agree. Finally, alcohol consumption was categorized among one of the factors that accelerate HIV/AIDS transmission but to a smaller extent. In addition, alcohol consumption should be reduced b~’ creating more job opportunities that would help all youths to get engaged in any certain activity to reduce unemployment and peer influence among youths, since the highest percentage of alcohol consumers and experience risky sexual behaviours are youths.
- ItemImpact of Alcoholism on Social Economic Status of Uganda a Case Study of Butanda Sub County, Kabale District(Kampala International University, Colleges of Humanities and Social sciences, 2014-06) Kemigisha, MediusThe study was carried out to examine the impact of alcoholism on socio-economic status of Ugandans and the researcher used Butanda Sub County as the case study. The research set the objectives which she based on to draft the questionnaire. The objectives were intended to; examine the causes of alcoholism, investigate how alcohol affects on socio-economic status of Ugandans and the possible solutions to reduce the level of consumption. In chapter two, the related literature was reviewed which was in line with the objectives and researcher questions. Chapter three focused on the research design, target population, sampled population, sample size data collection, data analysis and ethical considerations. The researcher had a total population of 57 people from whom only fifty were chosen. Chapter four of this research had the presentation, interpretation and analysis of findings. The data was presented in form of tables, graphs and pie charts. The researcher followed the questionnaire from the demographic characteristics of the respondents and then the objectives of the study. As per the demographic characteristics of the respondents, majority were men compared to women. It was implied that male drink too much alcohol compared to women who were few and they have therefore, realized the impact alcoholism on their social status. The age bracket of 30—40% had majority of the respondents because they were considered to be hardworking and enjoying partying compared to those within the age bracket of 20—30 and those who were above 50 years. In reference to the researcher’s findings on causes of alcoholism 64% of the total respondents who were the majority seemed to be aware of the reasons for alcoholism. Chapter five contained the summary of the findings. conclusions, recommendations and areas for further research. The researcher concluded that alcoholism exists in Butanda subcounty and the causes were known, impacts on socio-economic status and even the solutions evidenced by the researcher’s findings. The researcher identified that truly alcoholism exists in the sub county and that it interferes with children’s development and increase health care costs. Therefore, these factors affect the socio—economic status of Ugandans evidenced by respondents who strongly agreed and agreed. To overcome these negative effects of alcoholism, fining and arresting those who break the law had majority of the respondents who strongly agreed and agreed by 94% and imposing taxes on alcohol could reduce alcohol consumption in the sub county. It was included that the strategies and recommendations given could reduce
