Abstract
The study aimed at establishing challenges facing ABEK-an educational intervention for Karamoja Region. This educational intervention whose aim is to enable the Karamojang people embrace education has met several challenges and also has recorded several achievements. The study was carried out in one of the countries of Karamoja, Matheniko. The study was descriptive in nature and aimed at 80 respondents from different settings. The study found out that the most challenges included: lack of scholastic materials, lack of shelters, lack of enough centres and facilitators, low enthusiasm among the parents and insecurity was also reported. The achievements included high enthusiasm among the children; many children were joining formal education; laziness to learn how to read and write and also laziness to join higher institutions and also to join ABEK as staff. Among the recommendations, the government local authorities should work hand in hand to support the activities of ABEK.
