Abstract
The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between Managerial
Competencies, and performance of selected SMEs in Adyel Division Lira District. The
research was guided by three objectives;to assess the relationship between management
competence and business success of Small and Medium Enterprises in Adyel division Lira
district, to establish the relationship between management competences and business
growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Adyel division Lira district, to assess the
relationship between management competences and the growth in sales and profitability of
Small and Medium Enterprises in Adyel division Lira district.
Primary data was collected using self-administered questionnaires issued to the respondents.
Data was collected and analyzed using a sample size of 380 SMEs randomly selected from a
population of 40,000 SMEs.
The findings disclose a positive and significant relationship between
managerial competencies, and performance of SMEs. This implies that in order to improve
performance, SMEs should improve managerial competencies and put in place better
mechanisms for accessing credit at good terms.
