    Covid-19 Pandemic and Sustainable Livelihood of Informal Workers in Nakawa Division, Uganda

    This study examined the socioeconomic Effects of the impact of COVID-19 on the livelihood of informal workers in the Nakawa division, Uganda. The specific objectives were: to evaluate the impact of lockdown and curfew restrictions on the livelihood of informal workers; to assess the effects of workplace closure on the livelihood of informal workers and to determine the effects of responsiveness on the livelihood of the informal sector in Nakawa Division, Uganda. The vulnerability theory and sustainable livelihood theory were adopted in this study. The study used a cross-sectional survey approach to look at how the COVID-19 Pandemic affected the livelihood of informal workers in the Nakawa Division. The population for this study was all 6 informal settlements, local counselors, KCCA, SACCO Members and informal workers in Nakawa Division. The study’s sample was 370. The researcher then purposively selected 3 local counselors, Simple random sampling was used to select the number of informal workers in the 6 informal settlements in the Nakawa Division 362 informal workers were selected. This study used questionnaires to collect data. The questionnaires were checked for completeness and consistency. Data capturing was done using Microsoft Excel. The data from the completed questionnaires was entered into a Microsoft Excel sheet for analysis. Data was analyzed using correlation and regression analyses. The study also used a statistical software package (SPSS) for social sciences version 26 to analyze the data. The study used descriptive and inferential statistics to correlate each independent variable to the dependent variables. In the regression analysis, R Square = 0.126 showed that lockdown and curfew restrictions, workplace closure, and responsiveness collectively explained 12.6% variations in the livelihood of the informal sector in the Nakawa Division. ANOVA findings of F=175.71; p=0.000 indicated the effects was significant. The results on the standardized coefficients showed that lockdown and curfew restrictions, workplace closure, and responsiveness positively affected the livelihood of the informal sector in the Nakawa Division, shown by beta values of β = 0.157,0.255 and 0.213 respectively. The research concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities of people in informal sectors in their lifestyles. Therefore, this research recommends that policymakers and stakeholders should prioritize building resilience to future pandemics and economic shocks. Strengthening social protection programs, promoting digitalization, investing in healthcare systems, diversifying livelihoods, and enhancing regional cooperation can all play a significant role in building resilience in Nakawa Division, Uganda

    Project Management and Humanitarian Services in Mogadishu, Somalia:

    The study examined the contribution of project management on humanitarian services in Mogadishu, Somalia: a case study of United Nations. The objectives of the study were to; establish the influence of project planning on UN humanitarian service provision in Mogadishu. Assess the extent to which project execution contributes to the UN humanitarian service provision in Mogadishu and establish the effect of project controlling on UN humanitarian service provision in Mogadishu. The study adopted a cross sectional, descriptive survey designs and Quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The study population consisted of 210 employees of United Nations in Mogadishu, Somalia. The Krejcie and Morgan Table of (1970) were used to determine an adjusted sample size of 136 from the whole population under study. Stratified sampling techniques and purposive sampling were used to select the respondents and data was analysed using IBM, SPSS, 24 and presented using descriptive and inferential statistical results. The study findings revealed that good planning contributes to the success of humanitarian services and also planning has a relationship with success of humanitarian services, execution management function has to be strong for the success humanitarian services and that controlling function of management is necessary for success of the project at the UN humanitarian agency in Mogadishu, Somalia. The study concluded that the result of this research expresses a large group of project leaders' wishes and views regarding the managerial competencies that are important for a project to succeed at UN in Mogadishu, Somalia. The project execution contributes to the UN humanitarian service provision in Mogadishu, the United Nations has a system accountability in the field of humanitarian assistance, in particular through improved monitoring and evaluation to ensure that, among other things, clearer arrangements are made for system-wide evaluation, that the lessons learned from evaluation exercises are systematically applied at the operational level and that joint evaluation criteria are developed for humanitarian and disaster relief operations at the planning stage. The study recommended that UN humanitarian service provision in Mogadishu should further embrace the where stakeholders are particularly set on an outcome, this becomes a real issue where the main sponsors are the ones pushing in a particular direction. It also recommends that project leaders at the UN should improve verbal work authorization, written work authorization, but also focus on tasks and standards of excellence set by relevant project stakeholders.

    Federalism and Quality of Public Services in Puntland State of Somalia:

    The study was carried out in order to examine federalism and quality of public services in Puntland state of Somalia: A case of Galkayo district. The objectives of the study were to; examine the role of federalism in the quality of public services delivery in the education sector of Galkayo district, Puntland state of Somalia; assess the contribution of federalism on the quality of public services delivery in health service in Galkayo district Puntland state of Somalia and evaluate the influence of federalism on the quality of public services delivery in water and sanitation in Galkayo district Puntland, state of Somalia. The research design for this study was a cross sectional. This study used a study population of 260 respondents. However for the purpose of this research study, sample selection was a total 158 respondents subject to the Krejcie and Morgan Table of (1970) and the Solven’s formula. The study attained information from the field based on questionnaires and interview guides. However the findings from the study revealed that the predictor variables explained at least 34.6% of the variance in federalism (Adjusted R Square = .346). The results further indicated that water and sanitation (Beta = .295, Sig. = .000), was a better predictor followed by health service system (Beta = .279, Sig. = .000), and education service delivery (Beta = -.144, Sig. =.003). This implied that the federal government of Puntland should put high emphasis on water and sanitation and within this, the following should be a priority; Constant access to clean water, access & use of sanitary products and good hygiene practices. The study concluded that that federalism is considered as a comprehensive system of political- relationships which emphasize the combination of self-rule and shared rule within a matrix of constitutionally dispersed powers without basic consensus on some form of federal principles. The study recommended that quality of social service delivery should be improved in Galkacyo district local governance. Galikacyo district Local Government and individual civil servants should undertake to uphold the spirit and practice of job competence development in order to match the changing social service delivery demands.

    Activities of Non- Governmental Organizations and Project Implementation:

    This study focused on the activities of Non- Governmental Organizations and Project Implementation using a study of World Vision, Mogadishu, Somalia. The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of management commitment and support on the implementation of NGO-funded projects in World Vision, Somalia, to examine the effect of project team competence on the implementation of NGO- funded projects in World Vision, Somalia, to establish the extent to which community participation influences implementation of NGO-funded projects in World Vision, Somalia and to explore how government involvement contributes to the implementation of projects done by NGOs in World Vision, Somalia. The study was guided by the Contingency theory by Ainuddin, R. A. (2007). The study employed a cross-sectional study to examine the activities of Non- Governmental Organisations and Project Implementation. A sample of 105 was taken as per krecie’s and Morgan’s table following a target population of 143 people. The study used questionnaire and interview guide as the main tools for collecting data. The choice of data collection tools was dictated by the nature of data to be collected; the time available as well as the objective of the study. Findings from the study revealed that, project manager competence should be taken into account when assigning a project manager to a project, project manager were competence in the planning of the project activities and how resources will be utilized. Findings also revealed that groups and departments in organizations, coordination becomes a very important means of integrating the various activities, coordination facilitates social interactions where multiple actors work towards achieving a common goal, community participation influence systems, change relationships among partners, and serve as catalysts for changing policies, programs, and practices. The study concluded that, there is relationship between non-governmental organization and project implementation in World Vision organization Mogadishu, Somalia. A positive and significant relationship between non-governmental organization and project implementation in World Vision organization Mogadishu, Somalia and that Non-Governmental Projects require sufficient Manager Competences and coordination if their performance is to be felt. The study recommends that NGO project Managers should gain these competencies through training so that they are able to transform the livelihood of the people that benefit from their organizations, project managers and officers should effectively involve the community in areas such as goal identification, project design and others so that projects of NGOs are effectively implemented and Project managers in charge of Non-Governmental projects ought to ensure effective coordination of various project activities. This result to easy access of information from other team members and team members also become fully aware of the tasks they are expected to accomplish.

    Monitoring and Evaluation on Performance of World Vision Somalia-Community Development Projects

    The study sought to examine the influence of monitoring and evaluation on the performance of community development projects in Somalia using world vision as the fields of study, with the following Specific Objectives to examine the effect of monitoring and evaluation planning and implementation to performance of World Vision Somalia community development programs, to assess the effects of monitoring and evaluation quality assurance mechanisms to performance of World vision Somalia-community development programs and to find out the effects of monitoring and evaluation information sharing to performance of World vision Somalia community development programs. This study was underpinned on Program Theory developed by Huey Chen, Peter Rossi, Michael Quinn Patton, and Carol Weiss (1195). The study employed descriptive correlation research design on the respondents at world vision Somalia. However from the population of 260 respondents, a sample size of 158 respondents was selected basing on a formula for determining Sample size by Yamane Yamane, (2020). The study also used both Questionnaires and Interview Guide has Data Collection instruments. From the field findings, respondents strongly agreed that there Project objectives are clearly stated and measurable (45%) and 32% agreed to the statement. Furthermore findings from the field on the effects of monitoring and evaluation quality assurance mechanisms to performance of World vision Somalia community development programs revealed that 45% of respondents strongly agreed that; there was Project have internal quality control checks and review procedures for project monitoring data, 38% agreed. Also the Field results on the effects of monitoring and evaluation information sharing to performance of World vision Somalia community development programs revealed that 50% of respondents that Staff is trained in documentation of programme information, 31% agreed. From the study findings the research concluded that Monitoring and Evaluation Planning and implementation significantly affect the performance of development projects in World Vision Somalia, furthermore the study also concluded that Monitoring and Evaluation quality assurance mechanisms significantly affect performance of development programmes in World Vision Somalia. More so the study concluded that Monitoring and Evaluation information sharing and utilization significantly affects the performance of development programmes in World Vision Somalia. From the study findings and conclusions made the research study recommends that Monitoring and Evaluation Planning and implementation should be strengthened as a strategy to improve performance of development programmes. This study recommends that World Vision Somalia programmes should endeavor to invest and support Monitoring and Evaluation Planning and implementation activities so as to reinforce performance and effectiveness of programmes. Also the study recommends that World vision Somalia should strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation quality assurance mechanisms significantly contribute to the performance of development programmes. World vision Somalia programmes should strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation quality assurance mechanisms to improve performance of development programmes. And finally the study recommends that Monitoring and Evaluation information sharing and utilization should be given priority by World Vision Somalia as it is a big contributing factor to the performance of development programmes.
