Innovation practices and growth of small and medium enterprises in greater Kampala metropolitan area, Uganda
(Kampala International University, College of Economics and management, 2021-09) Tukundane, Benson
Small and medium enterprises are still facing limited growth and low survival rate due to serious obstacles in developing world. In Uganda, Small and medium enterprises still perform poorly, most SMEs donā€™t live to see their first, second and third birthdays and those that live to see them still face growth challenges, yet they perform a significant role in the economy as they employ majority of the population of the non-farming active population. Innovation is one of the practices underpinning economic growth and survival of small and medium enterprises in the business environment by providing great potential to survive and prosper. The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of innovation practices on the Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. This was achieved by three specific objective; To establish the effect of research and development on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Greater Kampala Metropolitan area, To determine the effect of new product development on the growth of small and medium enterprises in Greater Kampala Metropolitan area and To ascertain the impact of information technology adoption on the growth of small and medium enterprises in Greater Kampala Metropolitan area. This study adopted mixed methods approaches where quantitative and qualitative approaches guided by descriptive, correlational, survey and cross-sectional research designs. A sample of 226 (owner, manager and any other top administration staff) was selected from the population of 571 firms. Structured and unstructured questionnaires were used to collect data from the respondents with the guide of research assistants. Data collected was cleaned prior to analysis. Several diagnostic tests were done to ensure that the data was ready for parametric tests including checking for omitted values, checking outliers, common method variance, testing for normality, linearity, sampling adequacy and Multicollinearity. Pearson linear correlation and simple linear regression analysis was conducted on each of the variables to establish the relationship between variables and the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable respectively. Multiple linear regression was done to determine the predictive nature of the relationships between the study variables and relative effects of research and development, new product development and information technology adoption on the growth of SMEs. Findings from Pearson linear coefficient correlation revealed that all the three independent variables (research and development, new product development and information technology adoption) were significantly correlated with sig. values < 0.05. Simple linear regression results revealed that each 18.7%, 31.9% and 42.2% of growth of SMEs was explained by research and development, new product development and information technology adoption respectively. Multiple linear regression revealed that 46.8% of growth of SMEs in GKMA was explained by innovation practices R Square = .468. Out the three constructs of innovation practices that were regressed with growth of SMEs, information technology adoption was the highest predictor beta = .492 and p (.000) <0.05; it was followed by new product development with beta = .277, p (.000) <0.05 and research and development was found not statistically significant (sig. = .803>0.05) in a model where there are these variables. In this study, it was revealed that innovation practices account for 46.8% of the growth of small and medium enterprises in greater Kampala metropolitan area. Thus, this study concluded that innovation practices affect the growth of small and medium enterprises in GKMA. This study recommends that all stakeholders to support SMEs the adoption and implementation of the innovation practices in SMEs to facilitate growth in terms of profitability, sales and products. Predominantly as per this studyā€™s findings, businesses should start by embracing information technology adoption practices since it was ranked by this study as the number one predictor of growth of small and medium enterprises.

Entrepreneurship education and venture creation potential among colleges of education graduates in Kano state Nigeria
(Kampala international international: College of Economics and Management, 2018-05) Aminu, Rabi'u Nan
Most policymakers and academics agree that entrepreneurship is vital to the development and well-being of a society in various forms, for instance, in jobs creation, provision of goods and service. For that reason, many countries including Nigeria saw the light in dealing with graduates' unemployment that becomes molestful to them. Entrepreneurship education was introduced by Federal Government of Nigeria to be offered by students in all tertiary institutions irrespective of students' area of specialization in 2006. But since inception to date, the rates of graduates' unemployment keep on increasing. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the effect of entrepreneurship education on venture creation among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria. The objectives of the study were: to examine the effect of entrepreneurship education pedagogy on venture creation potentials among graduates of College of Education in Kano state : to determine the effect of entrepreneurship education content on venture creation potentials among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria: to examine the effect of entrepreneurship education institutional setting on venture creation potentials among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria. The design was descriptive and correlational also a mixture of positivist and interpretive paradigms. 385 samples were selected from the target population of 10,235 using Sloven's formulae. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were used to analyze the quantitative data, while discursive and thematic method was used to analyze the qualitative data. Chapter one made headway on the background coupled with the statement of the problem, purpose, specific objective, hypothesis, research questions as well as the significance of the study. Chapter two focused on a review of related literature. However, research methodology which conglomerated discussion on philosophy, research design, the population of the study, method of data collection used, data analysis, validity and reliability of the instrument coupled with a pilot study and ethical consideration were all discussed in chapter three. Chapter four consist of the findings of the study which indicated that the null hypothesis designed for the study be rejected because it revealed a positive significant relationship between entrepreneurship education pedagogy, education content, entrepreneurship education teaching personnel and venture creation potentials among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria. But for entrepreneurship education classroom setting the study revealed that it did not have any significant relationship with venture creation potentials among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria which mean its hypothesis hold. Chapter five consists of discussion, conclusion, and recommendation. Based on the findings it was concluded that entrepreneurship education pedagogy, content and teaching personnel have a strong positive effect on venture creation potentials among graduates of Colleges of Education in Kano state Nigeria. The three constructs covered and the ability to investigate how prepared Kano state graduates ' of Colleges of education were in terms of self-reliant which also served as part of the study gap in this study made the study unique in terms of contribution to knowledge. The recommendation made among others was the federal ministry of education should intensify effort to widen the scope of teaching entrepreneurship education for venture creation down to secondary schools and primary schools level in Nigeria. This will enable children before reaching youth age develop a spirit and courage of being self-reliant at any stage of their academic career.

Proactive work behavior and performance of employees in nontraditional agricultural export enterprises in central Uganda
(Kampala International University, College of Higher Degrees and Research, 2014-09) Kiweewa, Emmanuel
The level of employee performance has become more imperative as businesses are looking for competitive advantage in the over-saturated global market. One way to improve the performance of employees is to motivate them to behave in a proactive manner. This study investigated the relationship between p:-oactive work behaviour and performance of employee in non-traditional agricultural expmt enterprises in central Uganda. Existence of few empirical studies on the effect of pro-active work behaviour on perfonnance of employees in Uganda is the motivation for this study. The study adopted a descriptive conelational survey design that involved the use of questionnaires and interviews in collecting data from a sample of 208 respondents randomly selected fiĀ·om a population of 436 employees in eight NTAEs. Data was analyzed at uni-variate, bi-variate and at multivmiate level using means, standard deviation, !-statistics, ANOV A, PLCC m1d regression analysis. The study revealed that all variables included in the model (prediction, courage and goal setting) are strong predictors of employee performance. The study also established a strong and positive conĀ·elation between proactive work behaviour and performance of employees. The study recommends that all the three constructs of pro-active work behaviour should be enhanced among employees in NT AEs through developing and implementing a behavioural modification program to train employees on proactive work behaviour improvement which in turn will lead to advancement of their performance.
