Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish the perception of teachers and students on the causes of fires in secondary schools. The study was conducted under three research objectives. These were; to study the demographic characteristics of the respondents, to determine the perception of teachers and students on the causes of school fires in secondary schools, to establish difference in perception on the causes of school fires in secondary schools in Wakiso District schools between: teachers and students, respondents of different age groups, male and female respondents, teachers and administrators, students and prefects, teachers and students in day and boarding schools and teachers and students in government and private schools. The study employed survey research design particularly cross sectional survey design. Questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection in addition to document review, Four private and one government secondary schools were randomly selected in Wakiso District in which the study was conducted and the collected data was analyzed with the used Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). The major findings of the study were; economic, political and management factors moderately caused fires in secondary schools. It was also found out that there was a significant difference in perception on the causes of fires: between students and teachers, between students and teachers of different ages and students and teachers in day and boarding schools. However, the study concluded that there was no significant relationship between: perceptions of respondents of different positions in the schools and students and teachers in private and government schools, The study came up with the following conclusions based on the study findings; economic, political and management factors have contributed to school fires in secondary schools. And, the researcher concludes that there is significant difference in the perceptions of students and teachers on the causes of school fires in secondary schools.
