Abstract
The study aimed at analyzing the role of Gender equality in achieving sustainable development in Kabale district. The objectives of the study were; to establish the relationship between gender equality and sustainable development, to investigate the various attitudes and perceptions people have about gender equality, to explore the major challenges experiences as a result of gender equality since its inception in our societies, to establish the possible solutions to the challenges posed by gender equality and the further
prospects of this new era of women being equal to men. Exploratory research design was used in exploring attitudes and perceptions about gende requality among communities. The design was appropriate for this study because it was in position to discover the various attitudes and perception that the society had about gender balance. The study used purposive sampling methods. Purposive sampling involved selecting a certain number of respondents based on the nature of the office. This method was appropriate because it enabled selection of informed persons who possessed vital data that was comprehensive enough to allow gaining a better insight into problem. Primary data was gathered for the first time by the researcher; or is originated and is collected specifically for the problem under investigation. Primary sources are “materials that you
are directly writing about, the raw materials of your own research. From the findings the key issues associated with equality were resources ownership in the family, decision making in the family and in the community affairs, political participation inheritance of property, employment opportunities, participation in businesses, educational opportunities among others. It is concluded that, government though the ministry of gender labor and social development together with other development partners need to do much to sensitize communities such that they can change their attitudes in order accept social transformation with less challenges. The study recommends that, as the 2005 constitution stipulates, it is clear that affirmative action should be provided in favor of marginalized groups this has to be enforced by sensitizing communities about the rights women need to be accorded and try to reduce on the ignorance brought by the high levels illiteracy in the country side to
help harmonize relations between men and women.
