Abstract
This study was undertaken to carry out an investigation on human rights promotion and violence against women in Kigeme refugee camp of southern Rwanda. The objectives of the study were,1) To determine the violated human rights among women refugees in Kigeme refugee camp of Southern Rwanda, 2) To examine the forms of violence against women refugees in Kigeme refugee camp of Southern Rwanda and 3) To establish the relationship between violence against women and human rights promotion among women refugees in Kigeme refugee camp of Southern Rwanda. The study employed descriptive correlation and case study design which involved both qualitative and quantitative approaches. With regards to this method, the researcher used structured questionnaires which were based on simple and understandable questions and also interview guide to collect data. By use of Slovene’s formula, a sample size of 154 respondents was decided out of the population of 250. Respondents were identified by use of simple random sampling method and purposive sampling. Data was analyzed by use of frequencies, percentages, means, ranks and correlation measures. Responses from the 104 respondents suggested that promotion of human rights in the refugee camp was low. It was also found out that there were high rates of violence against women. It was also established that there was indeed a relationship between human rights promotion and violence against women which stood at -0.775 (sig 0.000) on the Pearson correlation scale which was interpreted as a significant negative and strong relationship. The researcher suggested more civic education, timely reporting of potential violence, beefing up security, reducing unemployment and self-security management.
