included establishing the role of local community leaders in environmental management in Kawempe division. Examining the extent of community participation in the management of environment in Kawempe division and identifying the challenges faced by the community in environment management in Kawempe division. The researcher used a survey design and descriptive. Research design is the specific data analysis techniques or methods that the researcher intended to use. The survey design involved the collection and analysis of data, and finding out the answers concerning the current status of the subject. In addition, it is a study of
variables in their natural setting or under usual circumstances. This comprised of observation of
facts, collection and classification of data, interpretation of data, formulation of theories,
application of facts and predictions. The findings presented in this study, were basically on the
level of the local community leaders in environmental management in Kawempe division. The
findings averaged revealed an average mean of 2.41 implying low, meaning that though the local
leaders in the Kawempe division contribute to the management of the environment the
environment prevalence does not exist in its fullness hence a conclusion that to a low level the
local leaders fundamentally contribute to environmental management. In conclusion therefore,
the findings reveal mean of 2.41 implying low, meaning that though the local leaders in
Kawempe division contribute to the management of the environment, the environment
management is still a challenge to the local leaders and community. The average mean of 2.63
with interpretation high, mean that most respondents are in agreement with the extent of
community participation in the management of environment in Kawempe division. I recommend
that there should need to improve planning and budgeting for management of the environment.
There is also need to integrate all aspects of environmental management into plans and activities
of the different sectors as the status of the environment will affect these sectors. It is important
while planning, to recognize the natural resource endowments and how these can be utilized to
enhance development while reducing the negative impacts of developments.
