Solutions for poor performance in Mathematics in secondary school students in Naivasha District Kenya

Abstract
The study revealed that Mathematics is an important subject as other subjects at school since it is
applicable in day to day life. The study was guided by the following objectives;
Finding out whether the student's attitude towards Mathematics has an impact on their
performance; to find out whether availability of materials and resources for learning Mathematics
contributes to good performance; and to find out whether students are able to realize or come up
with the solutions for their poor perfonnance in Mathematics.
Stratified sampling by proportional allocation was employed in six - selected secondary schools.
The subjects involved in the study were students, teachers and school administrators. The sample
size of 200 respondents was used though 170 participated in the study.
Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that Mathematics as a subject is 'difficult' to
students and hence it affects their academic performance in general.
Findings of the study show that teachers, school administrators and parent / guardians
acknowledge the way forward in making students perforn1 better in Mathematics.
The study therefore recommended that;
• The Government through the Ministry of Education should improve on the quality of the
school facilities through frequent supervision and Inspection. In private schools, the managing
directors should as well be concerned by the performance in Mathematics and other science
subjects in order to improve on the standards of academics.
• Parents should encourage their children develop their career as early as possible, as it's
found out that the mothers endorsement of the school and macro level parental behaviors
contribute significantly to the child's or student's later achievement.
