Abstract
The study was to establish the effect of funding on sustainability of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Tanzania, a case study of the Kinnapa Development programme in Arusha region. The specific objectives of the study were to establish the sources of funding NGOs in Tanzania, to establish the roles of NGOs in Arusha Tanzania, to determine strategies to improve funding of NGOs and to establish challenges facing NGOs in Arusha. The findings of research were that the sources of funding NGOs in Tanzania include; government subsidies that normally offered by the government to the non-governmental organization, donations in most cases also the non-governmental organization obtain donations from donors especially from developed nations, membership dues where by the members contribute through registration fee, the way to improve funding of NGOs include fund raising through the contribution of funds from different sectors to support an idea of the NGOs, adopt standard practices in managing NGOs, standard practices of managing should be similar with others NGOs worldwide to allow the donor agents access it without facing any difficulty, improvement of infrastructure such as roads, telecommunications, banking systems within the country can help to influence funding of NGOs, educating employees to help them acquire knowledge and skills on how to access funds for non-governmental organization worldwide through the searching engines such as Google among others, good government foreign policy like keeping human rights, spear ahead in hosting and seeking for resolution among conflicting countries, good conflict resolution among countries challenge to most of non-governmental organization due to unawareness the methods that has to be adopted to get the funders to donate, sometimes this can result due to lack of education that can empower the organization to fully access funders worldwide, poor infrastructure such as roads, telecommunications, banking systems. The roles of NGOs include, eradicate poverty, increase awareness of HIV/ AIDS,social inequality among others. The research concluded that non-governmental institutions have a great role in improvement of development in Arusha, and Tanzania at large through the operations of these NGOs institution such as the Kinnapa Development Programme. Based on the research findings, the following were recommended that; Government should have good leadership at all levels to attract donor agency, a government should have good foreign policies, like being less corrupt and works for the long-term interests of the nation as a whole also NGOs services should cater for the need of the poor.
