Abstract
This study assessed the influence of slums on urban development. The study was carried out in Buuloburte district, Somalia. Buuloburte District is located in Central part of Somalia and is boardered by halgan in the north, Kubadley in the West Buurweyn in the South and Buqaqable
in the East. The objectives to the study were to identify the factors responsible for the growth of slums in Buulohurte district: to examine the challenges faced by slum dwellers in Buuloburte
district and to establish the possible measures that can be implemented to address the problems
faced by slum dwellers in Buuloburte district. A descriptive research design used to describe the influence of slums on the development of urban areas and how the expansion of slums on wetland resources is being challenged in Buuloburte district. A sample size of 80 respondents were selected from the study population. To collect data, a simple random sample. each unit of the target population is assigned a number. Data was collected through questionnaires. interviews, focus group discussion and secondary sources such as hooks, journals etc. The study established that there were various factors contributing to the growth of slums in l3uuloburte district, which included natural population increase, rural urban migration, rural poverty. lack of basic infrastructures. technological advancement and improved facilities in urban centers. It was also concluded that environmental degradation and poor sanitation are the major challenges faced by slum dwellers in Buuloburte district where people are suffering from outbreak of diseases such as cholera and diarrhea due to lack of proper sewerage and rubbish disposal. In view of the findings and the conclusion, the following recommendations were drawn from the study there should be strict laws about the construction of especially residential apartments within urban areas and they should be adhered to. This will help to reduce on the construction of substandard houses (slums) with in the area. The government should ensure expansion of social infrastructures to the rural areas. This helps reduce to the influx of rural people into urban areas hence minimizing on the pressure exerted to the land resources within urban cities.
