- ItemAttributes of the teachers and pupil’s academic performance in selected schools of Gasabo and Nyamagabe districts of Rwanda(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2011-09) Niyindengera, FaustinThis study sought to test the null hypothesis of no significant difference on the academic performance of pupils between urban and rural primary schools. The study also attempted to generate new knowledge from the existing body of information and to validate the theory on which this study was based. Using a descriptive correlation research design and documentary analysis, data obtained from 430 teachers in 19 rural schools and 11 urban schools were analyzed using simple percentage and comparison of mean and standard deviation. It was found that pupils perform better in urban primary schools than in rural primary schools (Mean: 1044.45, SD: 5.83 in urban primary schools; against Mean: 417.36, SD: 3.61 in rural primary schools based on PLE and Mean: 216.18, SD: 5.58 in urban primary schools; against Mean: 71.10, SD: 3.21 in rural primary schools based on End of Year Examination). This difference in performance resulted from some teachers attributes such as qualification and salary, and from school location and family socio-economic status. The researcher Recommends that an effective system of continuous professional development should be created; increment of primary school teachers’ salary should be envisaged, parents and guardians should be more involved in their children’s education; Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) should be strengthened; and the Government should put more efforts in providing rural schools with learning resources and facilities.

- ItemThe effect of a learning material in probability on the academic performance of form three students in Mnyenzeni Secondary School, Kenya(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2011-09) Kazungu,Karisa CharoThis study determined the effect of a learning material entitled “Probability Made Easier” on the academic performance of form three students in Mnyenzeni Secondary School in the Coast Province of Kenya. The performance of students in Mathematics in National Examinations in this school is deplorable. The study sought to establish and recommend the kind of learning materials that can be used to enhance the learning of mathematics, specifically probability and hence improve performance. The study was conducted using the experimental research design, specifically the Trial and Cross-Over design. Data was collected in July using a researcher devised Record Sheet as well as existing documents namely: students’ admission registers, class registers and students’ files, from a hundred and one form three students of Mnyenzeni Secondary school. The data collected was analyzed using percentage distribution technique, the students’ mean scores and student test. The analyzed data was presented in tables. The study revealed that the respondents joined secondary school with good grades in Mathematics. This was observed in their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E.) Mathematics grade where over 80% had grade C and above. It further revealed that the majority of the respondents were male students. Over half of the respondents were aged below 18 years but a good percentage were over 18 years of age. Other findings of the study were that the learning material was significantly effective in the teaching and learning of probability. This is because the experimental group that was taught using the learning material registered a significant difference in the per-test mean score. It further registered a significant difference in the post-test mean gain in the Trial and Cross-Over Phases. This scenario disapproved the null hypothesis of no significant difference. The study concluded that the Learning Material was significantly effective in the experimental group in both the Trial and Cross-Over Phases. Further the study concluded that students would be motivated to learn if they see the relevance of what they learn in school to their immediate needs. The researcher recommended that the Learning Material be adopted in the teaching of probability in secondary schools in the district. Seminars need to be conducted to sensitize teachers on the need to motivate learners. All these are geared towards dealing with the problem of poor performance of students in mathematics

The study tested two research hypotheses that; I) family size and ii) parental education factors significantly influence students’ performance in Mombasa district. The study employed both cross sectional and correlational survey designs, with a sample of 72 students selected following Mugenda & Mugenda (1999)’s suggestions, using simple random, stratified random and purposive sampling. One set of questionnaire directed to form four students was used to collect data, Data analysis was done using SPSS’s simple frequency tables, mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s Linear Correlation Coefficient and Linear Regression Analysis. The findings indicated that on average students rated their family sizes as moderate (mean index ~ 3), parents’ attention, parents’ presence and occupation, family nutrition and economic status AS medium while parents’ attention as low (mean index ~ 2). Parents offer inadequate coaching and mentorship (mean index ~ 2) and parents’ encouragement and follow-up was low (mean index ~ 2). Fathers’ education level was medium while mothers’ level was low. The findings indicated that students’ performance was average in terms of participation, attendance, scores and improvement (mean index~3), and poor in terms of doing corrections and revision (mean index~2). Pearson’s Linear Correlation Coefficient and Regression results found that; i) family size factors significantly influence students’ performance in Mombasa District ii) parental vi education factors significantly enhance students’ performance, with parents’ coaching and mentorship being the most important factors. The researcher concluded that; i) while Parents’ attention significantly improves students’ performance, family size, parents’ presence and occupation, Nutrition and family economic status positively correlate with students’ performance, although the correlations are not significant; ii) Parental education factors significantly influence students’ performance altogether, however while coaching significantly improves students’ performance, Parents’ encouragement and followup do not. Mother’s education contributes more than for father’s. The researcher recommended that; I) Parents’ attention to students’ education, at home, should be increased to improve’ performance, all parents need to plan for their children irrespective of the number, increase on number of hours they stay with them at home, ensure they are fed well and adequately (e.g. breakfast, lunch and supper), parents should send their children to educated relatives and friends (e.g. in holidays) to make them admire the goodness of education and strive to achieve the same; ii) Parents, schools, NGOs and the government should assist in educating the girl child as mothers contribute more to students performance, parents should always get time to coach their children at home and give them encouragement to study well.
