- ItemChild abuse and its effect on academic performance of pupils in embakasi division, Nairobi east district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-04) Ngonze, Hellen MueniThe purpose of study was to determine the effects of child abuse on the academic performance of pupils in Embakasi Division, Nairobi East District Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were; to determine the effect of child abuse on the academic performance of pupils in Embakasi Division, Nairobi East District, to investigate the relationship between Child abuse and emotional behavior, to investigate the relationship between child abuse and violence in Embakasi Division, Nairobi East District and to investigate the common types of child abuse in Embakasi Division, Nairobi East District. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers and focused group discussion with the pupils. The findings showed that child abuse affects the participation of children in schools by performing poorly in class, by dropping out of school, suffering from emotional disorders among other things. The study come up with some recommendations which include among others Government making sure the culprits of child abuse are punished according to the law to prevent escalation, Schools devising means of identifying children who have been abused and help them by for example providing counseling services and the community being sensitized on the dangers of child abuse and how to prevent it. In conclusion the study recommended stake holders to take care of the children very well in order to ensure that they get meaning full education.

The first objective was to investigate the availability of instructional materials in kayole zone Embakasi division, Nairobi district pre-scholars. The research was investigated in line with the objectives of the study and this guided the researcher to make the findings. The first research question sought to investigating availability of instructional materials. The study discovered that; text books films, TV, projectors, chairs black board and radios were the available instructional materials given by the respondents. The second research question sought to investigate the sustainability of learning resources in kayole zone Embakasi division, Nairobi district pre- school. The third research question sought to impact of learning materials in kayole zone. The answers given by respondents to this researcher question were therefore as follows; good performances, sense of belonging, participation, courage, academic interest, were the answers given by the respondents.
- ItemThe impact of school feeding programme on academic performance of primary school pupils in Marafa division, Magarini district, Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-04) Mwarogo, Maitha ThoyaThis study was intended to determine the effect of free feeding programme on the performance of pupils in primary school in Magarini District, between April and August 2009. All secondary source of literature related to this study were made of use. The study adopted a descriptive research design which enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the problem of socio-economic factors on academic performance of pupils. Questionnaires and interview guides were used in the collection of data after which it had to be coded and presented in percentages and frequency distribution tables. The findings revealed that poor nutrition led to diseases and therefore because of diseases children do not perform well in school. The study also found out that nutrition was very important and that for a country to develop it had to focus on nutritional programs. It was recommended that the parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance proper and stable family background and how they influence child development.
- ItemInfluence of gender on academic performance in science subjects a case study of Githumu zone Kandara division central Kenya(Kampala International University, Institute of Open and Distance Learning, 2008-09) Kanyugi, JosephA study on Gender and Academic performance in science was carried out in Githumu Zone with the purpose of investigating and establishing the factors influencing Gender and academic performance in the science subject in Githumu Zone. The specific objective of the study were/ to compare out the boys/girls attitude towards the study of science. To identify some cultural practices that affect the performance of learners in the science. To establish whether both sexes participate fully in the science teaching learning situation. To determine whether motivation and the resources affect gender and academic performance of science in Githumu Zone. To identify appropriate intervention measures for the problems. The method used in the investigation were qualitative, and descriptive given the nature of the research problem. Data was obtained mainly from two sources namely the pupils profile and teachers profile where a researcher formulate a questionnaires and distributed to them for assisting him to carry out the study. The population studied consisted of one hundred pupils where girls and boys sampled were equal and thirty teachers, eighteen male teachers and twelve female teachers who handles science subject in their respective schools. Teachers are all trained and obtained various qualifications and grades. A questionnaire was developed from the sampled respondents. This instrument contained level of gender and academic performance. The researcher based his questionnaire in area namely, attitude, social cultural motivation language and teaching resources. Each area contained questions quantified into the following 5: strongly agree, 4: agree, 3: disagree, 2: strongly disagree, 1: undecided. After collection of the data, the researcher calculated the frequency and percentage to determine the level of attitude and academic performance in science in the areas such as social influence on gender performance, Differing attitude towards education by gende0 gender and performance in science classroom interaction and participation, science and learning resource. It was found out that social influence on gender performance, gender and performance in science greatly contribute the performance by gender. The teaching strategies and language used by science teachers were also found to be ineffective classroom intervention and participation was also found to be poor. It was also found that both pupils and teachers have poor attitude toward science by gender. However it was observed that teachers and pupils posed some positive attitude towards science but there is room for improvement

The specific objectives of the study were to determine the relationship between text books and pupil's performance, find out the relationship between library and pupils performance and establish the relationship between physical facilities and pupils achievements. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed the unsanitary conditions led to poor performance of pupils in class especially girls. The study recommended that the government should adequately support primary schools by building infrastructure that is conducive and enough for pupils so that they can concentrate well in class. Head teachers should ensure that the schools have enough text books and a well stocked library so that pupils have enough reading material to illustrate what they are being taught. The culture of reading and using the library should be instigated in pupils and this will improve on their performance.

- ItemSocio-economic influences on pupils academic performance in Ngonyek zone, trans-nzoia east disrict, Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-04) Koros, James K.This study focused on the impact of socio-economic factors on academic performance of pupils in Trans-Nzoi East district, Kenya. A descriptive research design was adopted which enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the problem of socio-economic factors on academic performance of pupils. Questionnaires and interview guides were adopted in the collection of data after which such data had to processed, coded and analyzed. An interpretation was made and this had to be based on the findings from the field. The findings indicated that education and academic performance were adversely affected by different social economic factors such as food availability as well as proper nutrition. It was also reported that that poor nutrition leads to poor performance of pupils in class. Recommendations were made which called for government focus on nutritional and feeding programs in schools. And that the parents and the community be sensitized on the importance proper and stable family background and how they influence child development

The study focused on teachers to determine the impact of their attitude towards pupils' academic performance. Since the zone examination results keep on falling year by year. Questionnaires were issued out and random interviews were also conducted on the selected sample of 50 respondents' The findings of the study shows that, teacher attitudes has a numbers of effects on academic performance of pupils in Ibeno zone. Teachers attitude were identifies to affect teachers competences and motivation The research concluded that in order to improve pupils performance in Ibeno zone teachers' attitude should be positive and government, ministry of Education, school administration and parent should establish systems to monitor how their teachers exercise their duties in schools to improve on pupils' performance. The study recommended that teachers should be academically and professionally qualified, works under favorable conditions of service. Encourage teachers to get training to improve their skills such as computer skills, guiding and counseling and motivate teachers that is by increasing salaries and allowances, giving prizes to teachers whose performance excel and finally promoting them.
