- ItemDrug and substance abuse among adolescents in Katanga slum, Kampala District(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2018-06) Esther, KakwanziThe study aimed at examining drug and substance abuse among adolescents in katanga slum, Kampala district, The main objective was to establish the determinants of drug and substances abuse among adolescents in Katanga slum, Kampala district. Specific objectives were; to assess individual factors that lead to drug and substance abuse among adolescents in Katanga slum, Kampala district. To establish socio-economic factors that lead to drug and substance abuse among adolescent in Katanga slum, Kampala district. To assess community factors that influence drug and substance abuse among adolescent in Katanga slum, Kampala district. Methodology: A Cross sectional study was carried out with researcher administered questionnaires as a method of data collection from 280 respondents and 10 key informants. Descriptive bivariate analysis was undertaken into SPSS and frequency tables, graphs, pie charts and p values were generated using Epi Data software. Results: from the findings, 46.8% was the prevalence of drugs and other substances abuse among adolescents. The following were found to have a statistical significance with drugs and substances abuse; age (pO.0I7), the single (p=O.OOI), received parental advice (p=O.006), how drugs are valued to them (P0.001), adolescents showing off in public (p=O.OO2), parental influence to abuse drugs (pO.OOI), easy accessibility (pO.Ol3), living in temporary homestead (pO.OOI), and law enforcement practiced in the area (p=O.O31). Conclusion and Recommendations: The study involved carrying out community health education, avoiding bad peer groups, parents guiding and being good example as far as drugs and other substances are concerned. The Ministry of Health collaborating with other stakeholders to introduce strategic policies on drug and other substances abuse preclusion especially in slums. Further research should be done on how to bridge the gap between adolescents abusing drugs and other substances and the stakeholders like government and Nongovernmental organizations to join hands in the abuse fight campaign.
- ItemA study to assess knowledge and attitude of adolescents regarding HIV/AIDs prevention a study of Lokopo sub-county Napak-district(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2013-11) Bazil, MuyaAs part of the efforts to understand the level of knowledge and attitude regarding HIV/AIDS prevention amongst Karamoja adolescents, a study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude of the Karamoja adolescents regarding HIV/AIDS prevention. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 34 respondents along with two focus group discussions and 5 key informants. Out of the 34 respondents, 1 7 were females and the other half were males.25 of the respondent indicated that they had never been at school and 1 5 were schooling. The study found that Majority of the adolescents in Karamoja had heard about HIV but knowledge about how it is transmitted and prevented is still incomplete amongst the adolescents. Majority of the respondents knew that HIV/AIDS is incurable and also knew that having sexual intercourse with in infected person and sharing of sharp instruments like razor blade, and needles are the major causative agents of the disease. Many of the adolescents first heard about l-IIV from the media and the major sources of information regarding HIV prevention were radios, teachers, parents, and texts books. However, there are still some misconceptions about the transmittable routes of HIV/AIDS. Theses misconceptions varied from gender and education levels. The common misconception amongst the schooling adolescents concerning the transmittable routes of HIV severe; kissing, mosquitoes bite and similar insects bites whereas amongst the non-schooling adolescents the commonest misconception were; you can get HIV through washing clothes of in infected person, hand- shakes, sneezing, coughing and sharing food concerning the non-transmittable routes, the adolescents especially school going adolescents had correct knowledge that HIV can be prevented by using condoms, having sex with HIV negative single partner, avoiding an HIV infected person and AIDS education. Whereas non schooling adolescents especially females had incorrect knowledge about the prevention methods that HIV can be prevented by putting on shoes, washing clothes and not sharing clothes with in infected person. Knowledge about condoms was insufficient amongst the adolescents only few of the schooling adolescents knew about the condom and its use.
