- ItemChild labour and academic perfomance in secondary schools of Chema Subcounty Kapchorwa District(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2018-08) Cheptoek, EstherThe study was entitled Child Labor and Academic Performance in Secondary Schools of Chema Sub county Kapchorwa District. The purpose of this study was to find out the major causes of child labor in Kapchorwa District and how it can be reduced or even solved completely in secondary school children, to what extent child labor affected students’ academic performance. The research gave suggestions and recommendations on how the government and schools can fight against this challenge in the community such that they can improve student academic performance. It was guided by three objectives which were directed general objective as to find out the impact of child labor on student academic performance in Chema sub-county Kapchorwa district. The study was mainly descriptive therefore it used qualitative methods in ollection. It also used quantitative methods to calculate and present the figures so as to obtain related things. The study targeted the students who are have an increasing record of poor performance in class where they come from and what they do at home from the two selected secondary schools in Kapchorwa district. The study found out that most students fail because their parents hold them at home to help in their domestic and business work which leaves students with limited time to study leading to performance in class especially in the final exams (UNEB).
- ItemChild labour and academic performance of learners in Luwero District, Uganda: a case study: Bombo Town Council.(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2015-09) Awel , JamesThe study focused on child labour and academic performance of learners in Bombo town council, Luwero District .This study was based on three objectives, i.e. to find the causes of child labor in Bombo town council, to identify effects of child labour on academic performance and solutions The study employed a cross sectional survey with 196 respondents selected by simple random sampling. The schools and respondents were randomly selected. Qualitative and quantitative data collections methods were used. Data were coded, cleared and entered EPI-DATA and reported to SPSS for analysis. About 52.3% of the respondents were female and 47.4% being male. Most respondents were below the age of 19 and majority were in 0 level In conclusion, the major cause of child labour is poverty since most parents lie below the poverty line. This study recommends government and different stake holders to try all possible means of fighting child labour in our community. The government should therefore enforce laws on human right to combat this evil.

By 1986 when the national resistance movement (NRM) came into power, it was estimated that 70%of Ugandans lived in poverty. In recent years it has been a controversy through in the mind of the Ugandans through the poverty status of the nation or any society or even family can have an impact on student’s academic performance. In review of this study intends to investigate the positive and negative impacts on students’ academic achievement in eastern Uganda This is because the diversity of world poverty by different scholars who have used it in their course of study and how they have affected their education performance academic development and parents involvements
- ItemThe impact of domestic violence on academic performance of students : a case study of Kangole girls’ senior secondary school Napak District(Kampala International University, College of Education, 2017-08) Apio , JacintaThe researcher carried out research on impact of domestic violence on academic performance of students; A case study of Kangole Girls senior Secondary school Napak District. The objectives of the study were to find out causes of domestic violence on students’ academic performance and find methods which should be used to reduce domestic violence. The research designs used were both qualitative and quantitative. Questionnaires were used to collect data from respondents. Teachers and students were sampled to provide information required. They were 75 altogether. A purposeful sampling technique was used to choose respondents. Data was analyzed. recorded and presented in frequency tables. The conclusion was made, that domestic violence is mainly caused by: people who take toxic drugs and alcohol, undisciplined children, poverty, fighting for family property. gender roles and discrimination cause domestic violence. Parents who cheat each other and come home from work very late also cause domestic violence. Domestic violence affects academic performance because both teachers and students extend their indiscipline to school situations. Applying gender sensitive policies, guidance and counseling. introducing tight laws, taking toxic drugs, practicing assertiveness. introducing policies against gender discrimination, parents understanding their roles will reduce domestic violence. The following recommendations were made; parents should be free to share their feelings with each other. To reduce domestic violence, gender discrimination, alcoholism drug abuse should be fought to reduce domestic violence.
- ItemThe influence of peer group on the academic performance of secondary school students in Bukwo District.(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2018-09) Chebet, EmillyThe purpose of this study was to investigate peer group influence on student academic performance in secondary schools in Bukwo. The objectives were to investigate whether peer group affect the academic performance of adolescent. To determine whether peer influence has any effect on academic performance of children from broken homes. To find out whether peer influence determines variation in academic performance of male and female students and To investigate whether age does determine the extent to which peer influence affects academic performance of students. This study employed a descriptive survey desigH that was a type of research undertaken with the aim of describing characteristics of variables in a situation. The target population of the study was form one students in boarding secondary schools in Bukwo district. A sample was a smaller group of subjects obtained from the accessible population (Mugenda and Mugenda 2003). It was concluded that peer group members who scored good marks in UCE had positive influence on student academic performance in secondary schools. Students seemed to do better in their early stages of Secondary school when their new Schoolmates had a good record of prior achievement. My reading of this result was that there was some form of social interaction between students that promoted higher attainments. The researcher recommends that Students and school stakeholders should be made aware of the benefits of peer group prior achievements as it greatly influences academic performance of students in secondary schools, Schools administration and other stakeholders should advise the parents on the amount of money to give to their children as pocket money as it has influence on the academic perfonnance of the students in secondary schools and School administration and stakeholders should provide good teaching! learning environment in order to achieve good academic performance
