(Kampala International University, diploma in guidance and counselling, 2010-06) Kyebale, Daniel
This study was carried out in Sembabule H/C IV, Mawogola County, Sembabule District in Southern region of Uganda aiming at establishing the relationship between ARVs and the health status of HIV/AIDS patients in the area. The study was guided by the following objectives: To establish the relationship between the access to ARVs and eligibility of HIV patients, the mode of action of ARVs and the health status of HIV patient, and the availability of ARVs and the health status of HIV patients. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional survey involving males and female, those admitted in the health facility and those from out patient department. A self administered questionnaire was subjected to a number of 60 respondents. Data collected was compiled and analyzed manually using simple scientific calculator, and the visual observations detected during the responses to verbal interactions. The results were interpreted and presented in statements, figures and tables. Results indicated that; Majority of respondents 28 were in age category 31-04 years. There were more males 32 (53%) than females 28 ( 47%). Most of participants were Catholics 28 more than other religions. Majority was peasant farmers 38, 8 were house wise, 7 self employed and the civil servants were the least. All respondents were trained before taking ARVs and majority had tested for a period more than 6 months. However majority 34 (57%) had signs of AIDS before testing. They were all initiated to ARVs, 48 were taking drugs on schedule. From the findings, the researcher concluded that HIV/AIDS is high among people of age between 20-40 years. ARVs are initiated to those people with reduced immunity and are well tolerated and improve the health status of respondents though there is a report of side effects. From the conclusion, there is a need to sensitize the community on the occurrence of HIV in all populations and the availability of ARVs in the facility with their influence in promoting the health status of HIV / AIDS patients.

(Kampala International University,College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2011-10) Friday, Rosemary
Mental illness is common today affecting 25% of people at some time during their lives and accounting for 14% of global burden disease. However, the mentally ill people continue to suffer harassment, stigma, and discrimination. Therefore it is from this back ground that the researcher wished to assess knowledge, attitude and practices of mental illness among community members of Kiziranfumbi Sub County, Hoima District. Tile study was descriptive and cross-sectional in nature and employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. Data was collected by using self administered questionnaire with open and closed ended questions. The sample size of 100 respondents was used in this study. The study attracted both female and males than males. Most of the respondents had low knowledge on the meaning of mental illness that is 76(76%), there was also poor knowledge on treatment of mental illncss78 (78%), and there was good knowledge on causes of mental illness. There was negative attitude towards the mentally ill and most practices such as taking mentally ill to traditional healers, discrimination 75 %( 75%). Mental illness remains a problem among the community members in Kiziranfunbi Sub county Hoima district. Therefore it is from this background that I urge the leaders of kiziranfumbi sub county and Hoima district at large to work hand in hand with the government to put in place innervations like sensitizing the public, train and recruit more health workers to provide information and help the community acquire adequate knowledge, positive attitude and good practices so as to close the gap present about mental illness.

Assessing the effects of domestic violence on academic performance in selected primary schools in Ssembabule District:
(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2010-09) Nabasumba, Juliet
Domestic abuse or rather commonly known as domestic violence is best defined by Markwitz (2000) to mean a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, friends or cohabitation. It broadly includes spousal abuse, child abuse, or intimate partner violence. Asking any Ugandan from any corner of the country and they will tell · you they have experienced, seen or been victims of any of the forms advanced by Markwitz. What is preposterous is that the impasse is on the increase affecting families, communities, including children. Children as this study has revealed do not only suffer from physical, emotional, psychological but affects their studies and grossly messing their academic grades. It is against this back ground that the researcher set out to assess the extent of the effect. The specific objectives were, to establish the effects of domestic violence on academic performance, to ascertain the relationship between domestic violence and academic performance, to identify avenues established by authorities to remedy the state of affairs and to identify possible solutions to the problem. The findings of this study are appalling; members of the community seem to have accepted domestic violence as a way of life for mainly married couples. Because of this people can not tell whether most of the fights and squabbles that happen in homes actually amount to domestic violence. Members of the community hence never report such cases to authorities or can , even testify in Court when called upon. In effect children miss school, or at best those who can persist end up failing examinations, not because they are dense but because they are psychologically unbalanced and lack concentration at school. The researcher ends with recommendation to both NGO heads, Ministries of Education, Information and to Cultural heads to harness efforts and save the situation.

AIDS is still a serious problem because it has led to increased number of widows (Female Headed house holds), orphans, decrease in labor, Child Headed House holds, immoral behaviors like rape and defilement, stigmatization. There fore the researcher found it imperative to conduct this study to address this problem in Lutungu Village and in Rakai District as a whole. The researcher was carried out in Lutungu village, Lwanda parish, Rakai District; however the Research study was carried out only in one NGO that to say Rakai Counsellors' Association which is located at the District Head quatiers. Random sampling method was used to get different respondents. The respondents included PLWHAs, Orphans and the Staff of RACA and this totaled to 45 (forty five) respondents used. The data was collected through interviewing and the questionnaires to the respondents which were answered. The researcher formulated questions which she distributed to the respondents to fill in, thus getting the needed info1mation because the researcher was interested in getting different options or views from the respondents. This saved time since few hours were needed for the respondents to answer questions asked by filling in the gaps. Interviews were conducted to enrich the data this was because they high response, better compression and I was able to get first hand or primary information. The findings of this study were therefore ensured of good management of PLWHAs, offering services through NGOs' intervention and the govenm1ent. Unlike any other area in Rakai, Lutungu Village, Lwanda Parish are open about the disease.
