- ItemCauses of Early Marriages Among School Going Pupils: A Case Study of Ijara District North Eastern Province.(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2008-08) Hassan, Barre SaneiThe study carried out a critical analysis and investigation on the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils in Kenya. The study carried out this research from North-Eastern Province in Ijara District. Previous studies indicate that among the causes of early marriages among school-going children include traditional beliefs and the luxurious life styles that these young youths want to engage in before they are mature enough to accommodate the outcomes. The researcher applied a purely quantitative research design in presenting and interpreting the research findings. The technique of data collection used was mainly the use of questionnaires with some key informant interviews. Selection of the samples was based on a simple random sampling procedure so as to give all the respondents equal chances of participating in the study. Research findings revealed out that; the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils (children) include; the need to get wealth from daughters, poverty levels that leave parents helpless with regard to the need to pay school fees for their young ones, peer influence among the children and above all the lack of guidance and counseling of these children by their parents A number of measures have been drawn up basing on the researchers observation and conclusions of the research findings. These include among others: government support to the young children whose parents cannot afford their education needs, sensitization and community awareness about the need to keep children at school, the enactment of laws and policies against those who defile young girls, cultural transformations among others.
