- ItemCauses of Early Marriages Among School Going Pupils: A Case Study of Ijara District North Eastern Province.(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2008-08) Hassan, Barre SaneiThe study carried out a critical analysis and investigation on the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils in Kenya. The study carried out this research from North-Eastern Province in Ijara District. Previous studies indicate that among the causes of early marriages among school-going children include traditional beliefs and the luxurious life styles that these young youths want to engage in before they are mature enough to accommodate the outcomes. The researcher applied a purely quantitative research design in presenting and interpreting the research findings. The technique of data collection used was mainly the use of questionnaires with some key informant interviews. Selection of the samples was based on a simple random sampling procedure so as to give all the respondents equal chances of participating in the study. Research findings revealed out that; the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils (children) include; the need to get wealth from daughters, poverty levels that leave parents helpless with regard to the need to pay school fees for their young ones, peer influence among the children and above all the lack of guidance and counseling of these children by their parents A number of measures have been drawn up basing on the researchers observation and conclusions of the research findings. These include among others: government support to the young children whose parents cannot afford their education needs, sensitization and community awareness about the need to keep children at school, the enactment of laws and policies against those who defile young girls, cultural transformations among others.
- ItemCauses of girl child school dropout a case study of the selected primary schools of kibibi sub county .Mpigi district(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2010-08) Salim, TusubiraThe purpose of the study was to explore the causes of girl child drop out in primary schools. The study was conducted in primary schools. The study was conducted in primary schools in Kibibi Sub county in Mpigi district. The researcher collected data from teachers, pupils, self-administered questionnaires, guided interviews and observation were the basic instruments. The collected data was tabulated and analyzed comparing percentages number of the respondents for the variablc under investigation. The findings revealed that, the increasing poverty among the parents and lack of basic needs by the pupils are the main causes of girl child drop out in primary schools in Kibibi sub county; other factors include distance to schools, educational status of parents, and death of parents, domestic violence and age of the pupil. In view of the above findings the following conclusions can be made Poverty and lack of basic needs do affect the retention of pupils in primary schools. This s confirmed by parents who fail to raise their children's dues in time and find them being sent home. Some of the parents believe that instead of wasting time on education, it is fruitful for girls to stay at home and engage in some vocational activities hence leaving school for good. There is no way some one will keeping school with out the basic needs as well as school requirements, like books, uniforms, sanitary towels, fees, geometry set and others to mention but a few.

Both the schools and individual Students have not yet accrued to the full benefits of FSE. This study investigated the causes of poor academic performance among Students in selected schools within Kigumo district, Kenya. The study employed casual- comparative design that seeks to discover possible causes and effects of behavior pattern or personal characteristics. However a rise can be realized since the teachers are well qualified and the teaching learning materials are there though inadequate. Students need to be encouraged to work harder on their own supplement what they are taught by teachers. In addition the teaching/learning resources need to be made adequate and the school needs general improvement to be conducive to better learning.
- ItemThe Causes of Poor Performance of Secondary Leaving Examination in Watamu Location in Malindi District(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of science with education, 2010-08) James, Mwameri MugangaThe purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of poor academic performance in Secondary schools in Watamu location, Malindi District, Kenya The specific objectives of the study were to determine if discipline affects the students' academic performance, to determine if a teacher's quality affects the students' academic performance; and to determine if school facilities affect the students' academic performance in Secondary schools. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to students, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students; and school facilities have a direct impact on the students' academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations.
- ItemDecentralization and service delivery in secondary education in Makadaradivision, Jericho, Makadara zone Nairobi east District- Kenya:(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2012-11) Wilson, Theuri WaweruThe major objective of this study was to examine the implementation process of Education Decentralization specifically in view of having the required institutions, and their performance, :he level and nature of participation of the community, the financial resources made available md its adequacy. To meet the above objective concerned authorities, professionals and ~ommunity members have been interviewed. Data for the research was collected from Secondary sources with the help of interview guides, 1nstructured questionnaire and focus group discussion guides. Secondary sources were equally ~eviewed. The study was conducted in Nairobi East District in the Eastern part of the country. fhe study found out, among other things, that Kenya Education Decentralization gave the nandate for responsibilities like: opening schools; recruit, promote, discipline and dismiss :eachers and other educational professionals; procure and distribute school provisions without xior approval of ministry of education. The study found that the power devolved is adequate to .mdertake the responsibilities of expanding Basic Education. But the relationship between the \lairobi East District Education office and that of schools is mostly characterized by a top-down 1ierarchical relationship. In Nairobi East District Education and schools level there is manpower xoblem in terms of having the relevant capacity to undertake the responsibilities and bring ~hange in Education Decentralization. There is acute budget shortage principally capital budget .vhich is reflected in shortage of school infrastructure, provisions and manpower sho11age and as 1 result a tendency of exercising much reliance on the community beyond it can afford to tolerate s observed. :twas generally recommended that for Education Decentralization to succeed there is a need to address the capacity of all those involved from District Education office to the level of schools and equally the budget constraint must be solved if education should serve as a basis of development.

AyubThe study examined the effect of poverty and attitude on secondary school education; the case of Othaya Division- Central Province; Kenya The objectives of the study were:- 1. To assess the existing parent and student attitudes on education in Othaya Division 2. To investigate on the challenges facing secondary school education in Othaya Division 3. To assess the levels of poverty at the household level in Othaya Division The research was principally descriptive involving both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data analysis. Stratified random sampling techniques were also used to select respondents for the study and total of 130 respondents participated in the study. The main instruments for data collection were questionnaires, focused group discussions and face-to- face interviews were conducted. Data collected using questionnaires and a structured interview guide was analyzed using frequency counts in form of percentages and was later tabulated to determine the level of significance. The findings of the research showed the low attitude of parents and students is attributed to the high levels of poverty in Othaya Division that has driven many students out of schools and forced many parents to withdraw their students especially in the so-called "good schools". The researcher recommends among others things that government should increase financing of these educational institutions, review the educational curriculum and provide education for all through the introduction of Universal Secondary Education as this will help those students especially from the disadvantaged families to enroll and acquire basic Education.

Many researchers have come out with different views on punishments like Birungi, Nagawa, Olupot. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect relevant information of the study. This study revealed that there is a need for the administrator, teachers and students to know various effects of punishments and measures to be done in order to find ways of solving problems rather than punishment. The findings revealed the negative and positive effects of punishments, so administration and teachers are to view on each effects.

Objectives used are; (i) to identify the causes of family conflicts in Malera subcounty in Bukedea district (ii) to establish the link between family conflicts and girl child education in Bukedea district (iii) to find out tentative solutions to family conflicts so as to enhance girl child continuity in school. The design used in this research are qualitative and quantitative. The findings of the study are; pove1ty was the major cause especially when a man fails to provide for the family, family conflicts have negative impact on the girl child education, therefore there is need for guidance and counseling. The conclusion of this study is, the majority of the respondents were males in the age bracket of 10-20 years, single, had attained primary education but had no certificate. The recommendations; To the community developers of Malera subcounty should come up vigorously to sensitize the public on the effects of family conflicts on girl child education. To the government, train and recruit substantial number of counselors who will carry out the counseling of the affected families to avoid the negative impacts brought by family conflicts. To government of Uganda, should institute scholarships for girl child and uphold the affirmative action to enhance their continuity in school. To the future researchers, this will be secondary source of information for them as they carry out research in similar topics. To the researcher, this is a requirement to be fulfilled in order to be awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Education Secondary of Kampala International University.

The general objectives of the study were to investigate the causes of drug abuse and its impact on academic performance of learners. The study took a quantitative approach to collect and interpret the data. The study also employed a descriptive survey design to carry out the study• and used a questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The population targeted was Secondary school teachers and ECO teachers who were sampled using the simple random sampling to get the teachers who would fill the questionnaire. These teachers were used to investigate the effects of drugs abuse to learning in ECO centres and lower Secondary school. After the researcher has analyzed the questionnaire, it was established that there is drug abuse in the zone. It was also found out that the most commonly abused drug is alcohol. It is also evident that drug abuse has negative effects to learning for instance learners who indulge in drug abuse have low academic achievements and indiscipline cases. The researcher recommends that trained personnel handles cases of drug abuse to stop its effects on learning and be done through guiding and counseling.
- ItemThe Impact of Motivation of Teachers on Students' Academic Performance in Selected Secondary Schools in Katakwi Town Council(Kampala International University, bachelors degree in secondary education, 2019-06) Grace, AmugeThis study was conducted to establish the impact of motivation of teachers on students' academic performance by taking the case of some selected secondary schools in Katakwi Town Council. The academic performances in most schools have always been poor despite the government's effort to improve it. The study particularly sought to establish the effect of poor motivation of teachers on students' academic performance and recommend the appropriate ways teachers should be motivated by school management and other stakeholders if students' academic performance is to be improved. The study was conducted by cross sectional survey, data being collected during the month of August 20 18, using questionnaire, interview guide and observation methods from 56 respondents randomly selected from 4 secondary schools. The data was analysed and tabulated in the table form and graphs for easy interpretation. Frequencies and percentages were used to describe and interpret the findings from the fields. The study generally established that poor motivation of teachers has a terrible negative impact on the academic performance of students in secondary schools. Poor motivation was found in hinder opportunities for teachers to teach, guide and encourage learners which are pre-requisite to good academic performance. The research also pointed out dissatisfaction, strikes, inadequate assessment of students, indiscipline of students, poor relationship between teachers and school management as major effects of poor motivation of teachers or students' academic performance in Katakwi Town Council. However, the situation in Katakwi Town Council could be a reflection of the general situation in Uganda. The study concludes that for teachers to teach well and students excel academically, they need good motivation. It recommends that there is need for school management to improve on teachers' welfare. Government in conjunction with the ministry of finance and the ministry of education and sports should give secondary school teachers professional allowance besides increasing their salaries. The study also recommends that there should be establishment of structures such as teachers' accommodation, laboratory and library in each school. This will make teachers love the job of teaching and do it permanently, hence students' good academic performance.

- ItemInfluence of family background on secondary school students’ academic performance in science subjects in Uganda a case study of Makindye division, Kampala(Kampala International University. College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2018-05) Kibumba, SimonFamily background has been enlightened as of great importance in molding the performance of academic performance of students in schools worldwide. This study therefore investigated the influence of family background on student’s academic performance in science subjects in secondary schools in Makindye division of Kampala capital city of Uganda. This study focused on the influence of parental marital status, level of education of the parents and family income on student’s academic performance in science subjects in the stated area of study. The study employed a descriptive research design. The study population involved all the students at ordinary level in Makindye division of Kampala Capital City Authority. The study used a sample of 104 students from the 10 selected secondary schools. Purposive sampling was used to select the class of the students to interview but the actual students to be interviewed were randomly selected from the classes as this helped to eliminate bias. The data was collected using a questionnaire and was coded, entered in computer. The data was presented using frequencies, multiple regression and Pearson coefficient correlation. A descriptive analysis options of SPSS version 16 was used to aid in generating a summary of results which were represented in tabular form. The findings of the study showed that parental marital status had a strong positive relationship with academic performance of students in science subjects standing at Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.611, parents’ level of education had a strong positive relationship standing at Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.577 and also family income had a strong positive relationship with students’ performance in science subjects at a Pearson coefficient value of 0.501. The recommendations were made to be used by many personnel's including policy makers, administrators, teachers and further researchers in the same field.
