- ItemA sound study of the effects of Divorced parents on their children’s academic performance in selected secondary school in Kansanga sub-parish(Kampala International University. College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2007-10) Sakindi, MosesThe study was conducted in Kansanga Sub-Parish between July 2007 and September 2007. The aim of the study was to observe the effects of Parental Divorce on children’s academic performance within the Parish. The specific objectives were to determine the effects of Parental Divorce on a student’s academic performance, to examine the need to change the attitude and perspective towards family values, to develop a criteria for identifying the minor and major effects of marriage breakdown on students from these families and to come up With strategies and conclusion from which recommendations were made to students from divorced families and the society at large. The study used qualitative and quantitative designs in which Data was collected once through structural questionnaire with son~e open and closed ended questions. A total of 90 respondents were involved in this study in which were three groups of people i.e. students from Divorced families, members of the Kansanga community, and teachers who teach these children. Stratified Random sampling was used to get the intended respondents. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages and tabulation in some cases were used to summarize the information. Results show that lack of communication, adultery, economic or financial constraints are the major causes of divorce within Kansanga Sub-Parish. The major effects of Parental Divorce on students were, poor adjustment, decline in the academic field. The researcher wishes to recommend strategies vital for enhancing good marriages and hence curbing the effects of Parental Divorce on the society specifically on their children
- ItemSchool Administration and Students Discipline at St Brigid’s Girls’ High School-Kiminini Kenya(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2007-11) Cheptei, C. JeridanThe purpose of this study was to find out that the effect of school administration on students discipline at St. Brigid’s Girls’ High School in Kiminini Division Trans-Nzoia District Data was collected from thirty students who are sampled using systematic random sampling, ten teachers who are purposely sampled and the head teacher. Data was collected by use of questionnaires, interview schedules and analysis of documents. Data as analyzed using frequency distributions and percentages. The research findings revealed that the discipline of students is mainly determined by the way the head teacher performs her obligations. It was found that there was effective communication between the learners and the teaching staff. Major causes of indiscipline in the school were attributed to poor governance and administration of the previous head teachers. Students were not involved in the decision making process of the school. There was good governance and administration, of the school which was reflected through good relationship that existed between the learners and the teaching staff. It is recommended that the Ministry of Education in partnership with Kenya Institute of Education conduct country wide research to establish the major variables that affect the discipline of students so as to curb the increasing cases of indiscipline in schools. It is also recommended that the administrators are equipped with knowledge and skills of management through work shops and seminars. This will help to create good administration, which enhances positive co existence among members by promoting trust and hence improving discipline of the students, teaching staff and the non teaching staff.
- ItemCauses of Early Marriages Among School Going Pupils: A Case Study of Ijara District North Eastern Province.(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2008-08) Hassan, Barre SaneiThe study carried out a critical analysis and investigation on the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils in Kenya. The study carried out this research from North-Eastern Province in Ijara District. Previous studies indicate that among the causes of early marriages among school-going children include traditional beliefs and the luxurious life styles that these young youths want to engage in before they are mature enough to accommodate the outcomes. The researcher applied a purely quantitative research design in presenting and interpreting the research findings. The technique of data collection used was mainly the use of questionnaires with some key informant interviews. Selection of the samples was based on a simple random sampling procedure so as to give all the respondents equal chances of participating in the study. Research findings revealed out that; the causes of early marriages among school-going pupils (children) include; the need to get wealth from daughters, poverty levels that leave parents helpless with regard to the need to pay school fees for their young ones, peer influence among the children and above all the lack of guidance and counseling of these children by their parents A number of measures have been drawn up basing on the researchers observation and conclusions of the research findings. These include among others: government support to the young children whose parents cannot afford their education needs, sensitization and community awareness about the need to keep children at school, the enactment of laws and policies against those who defile young girls, cultural transformations among others.

- ItemSolutions for poor performance in Mathematics in secondary school students in Naivasha District Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-04) Kamau, John WainainaThe study revealed that Mathematics is an important subject as other subjects at school since it is applicable in day to day life. The study was guided by the following objectives; Finding out whether the student's attitude towards Mathematics has an impact on their performance; to find out whether availability of materials and resources for learning Mathematics contributes to good performance; and to find out whether students are able to realize or come up with the solutions for their poor perfonnance in Mathematics. Stratified sampling by proportional allocation was employed in six - selected secondary schools. The subjects involved in the study were students, teachers and school administrators. The sample size of 200 respondents was used though 170 participated in the study. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that Mathematics as a subject is 'difficult' to students and hence it affects their academic performance in general. Findings of the study show that teachers, school administrators and parent / guardians acknowledge the way forward in making students perforn1 better in Mathematics. The study therefore recommended that; • The Government through the Ministry of Education should improve on the quality of the school facilities through frequent supervision and Inspection. In private schools, the managing directors should as well be concerned by the performance in Mathematics and other science subjects in order to improve on the standards of academics. • Parents should encourage their children develop their career as early as possible, as it's found out that the mothers endorsement of the school and macro level parental behaviors contribute significantly to the child's or student's later achievement.

AyubThe study examined the effect of poverty and attitude on secondary school education; the case of Othaya Division- Central Province; Kenya The objectives of the study were:- 1. To assess the existing parent and student attitudes on education in Othaya Division 2. To investigate on the challenges facing secondary school education in Othaya Division 3. To assess the levels of poverty at the household level in Othaya Division The research was principally descriptive involving both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data analysis. Stratified random sampling techniques were also used to select respondents for the study and total of 130 respondents participated in the study. The main instruments for data collection were questionnaires, focused group discussions and face-to- face interviews were conducted. Data collected using questionnaires and a structured interview guide was analyzed using frequency counts in form of percentages and was later tabulated to determine the level of significance. The findings of the research showed the low attitude of parents and students is attributed to the high levels of poverty in Othaya Division that has driven many students out of schools and forced many parents to withdraw their students especially in the so-called "good schools". The researcher recommends among others things that government should increase financing of these educational institutions, review the educational curriculum and provide education for all through the introduction of Universal Secondary Education as this will help those students especially from the disadvantaged families to enroll and acquire basic Education.

Both the schools and individual Students have not yet accrued to the full benefits of FSE. This study investigated the causes of poor academic performance among Students in selected schools within Kigumo district, Kenya. The study employed casual- comparative design that seeks to discover possible causes and effects of behavior pattern or personal characteristics. However a rise can be realized since the teachers are well qualified and the teaching learning materials are there though inadequate. Students need to be encouraged to work harder on their own supplement what they are taught by teachers. In addition the teaching/learning resources need to be made adequate and the school needs general improvement to be conducive to better learning.

Many researchers have come out with different views on punishments like Birungi, Nagawa, Olupot. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect relevant information of the study. This study revealed that there is a need for the administrator, teachers and students to know various effects of punishments and measures to be done in order to find ways of solving problems rather than punishment. The findings revealed the negative and positive effects of punishments, so administration and teachers are to view on each effects.
- ItemCauses of girl child school dropout a case study of the selected primary schools of kibibi sub county .Mpigi district(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2010-08) Salim, TusubiraThe purpose of the study was to explore the causes of girl child drop out in primary schools. The study was conducted in primary schools. The study was conducted in primary schools in Kibibi Sub county in Mpigi district. The researcher collected data from teachers, pupils, self-administered questionnaires, guided interviews and observation were the basic instruments. The collected data was tabulated and analyzed comparing percentages number of the respondents for the variablc under investigation. The findings revealed that, the increasing poverty among the parents and lack of basic needs by the pupils are the main causes of girl child drop out in primary schools in Kibibi sub county; other factors include distance to schools, educational status of parents, and death of parents, domestic violence and age of the pupil. In view of the above findings the following conclusions can be made Poverty and lack of basic needs do affect the retention of pupils in primary schools. This s confirmed by parents who fail to raise their children's dues in time and find them being sent home. Some of the parents believe that instead of wasting time on education, it is fruitful for girls to stay at home and engage in some vocational activities hence leaving school for good. There is no way some one will keeping school with out the basic needs as well as school requirements, like books, uniforms, sanitary towels, fees, geometry set and others to mention but a few.
- ItemThe Causes of Poor Performance of Secondary Leaving Examination in Watamu Location in Malindi District(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of science with education, 2010-08) James, Mwameri MugangaThe purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of poor academic performance in Secondary schools in Watamu location, Malindi District, Kenya The specific objectives of the study were to determine if discipline affects the students' academic performance, to determine if a teacher's quality affects the students' academic performance; and to determine if school facilities affect the students' academic performance in Secondary schools. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to students, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students; and school facilities have a direct impact on the students' academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations.

The study was targeted to children of Uasin Gishu secondary, Central, Secondary, Kapaos .Secondary School and 64 Secondary schools. Quantitative research design was employed and purposive sampling was also employed. Head teachers and teachers provided .Secondary data. It was found out that there was overwhelming child physical abuse in the area of study. Most of the abused were in the range of 7 - IO years. Most abusers were reported to be step mothers who were surprisingly in their young ages. Most abusers had stopped in F.I and were mentally normal. Most acts of abuse included severe beating, burning and sometimes sexual abuse.

- ItemThe imp act of drug abuse on academic performance of learners in secondary schools in Roret division, Getarwet village, Roret zone of Bureti district of rift valley province in Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-11) Mutai, HenryThe study examined the impact of drug abuse on academic performance of learners. The general objectives of the study were to investigate the causes of drug abuse and its impact on academic performance of learners. The study took a quantitative approach to collect and interpret the data. The study also employed a descriptive survey design to carry out the study• and used a questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The population targeted was Secondary school teachers and ECO teachers who were sampled using the simple random sampling to get the teachers who would fill the questionnaire. These teachers were used to investigate the effects of drugs abuse to learning in ECO centres and lower Secondary school. After the researcher has analyzed the questionnaire, it was established that there is drug abuse in the zone. It was also found out that the most commonly abused drug is alcohol. It is also evident that drug abuse has negative effects to learning for instance learners who indulge in drug abuse have low academic achievements and indiscipline cases. The researcher recommends that trained personnel handles cases of drug abuse to stop its effects on learning and be done through guiding and counseling.
