- ItemCauses of Drug Abuse on the Behavior of Pupils of Selected Primary Schools in Kabare Education Zone Kirinyaga, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2008-11) Rosemary, WanjikuMany pupils have dropped out of school in the past in Kabare Education Zone. The researcher felt that one of the factors causing the dropout is drug abuse. This because the children are seen abusing tobacco and alcohol immediately they leave school. The research was about causes of drug abuse on the behaviour of pupils of selected primary schools in Kabare Education zone. The researcher used survey methods to reach out the pupils in the zone. The instrument used was questionnaires. The methods used in sampling the respondents included purposive sampling (for head teachers), lottery method (for teachers) and stratified sampling for parents and learners. The raw data was analyzed qualitatively. The study revealed that drugs were commonly abused in the abused in the zone. The most prevalent drug was tobacco and alcohol. The causes of drug abuse were found out as frustrations and anger and the inability of parents to meet their children’s developmental needs. The recommendations from the study aimed at improving schools through guidance and counseling of children from schools so as to improve on their morality and self-esteem and to create in the sense of values and morals.

The study tried to establish the relationship between indiscipline and performance of pupils. In the methodology the study relied on primary and secondary sources of information. Primary sources included questionnaire guides while secondary sources included the zonal official records which tried to provide information about the school, their backgrounds and other vital background information about the schools. The study was based on the assertive discipline theory by Lee and Marlene Canter. His theory based on the concepts of teacher's rights in the classroom as well as those of the pupils. It is on this that the researcher has based his theoretical frame work. A wide number of books and other references were used in providing literature in chapter two and enrich the study. In the findings the pupils discipline were discovered to have a significant effect on pupils' performance in primary schools in Mbitini Zone.
- ItemThe impact of free primary education on the performance of learners:(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-04) Muthangya, Josiah M.In Kenya, like in many other countries of the world, the plight of the physically handicapped children has been quite an issue. The problem is exacerbated by societal practices that look down upon the physically handicapped, making not only socialization at homes difficult but also learning in schools. This research proposal therefore seeks to investigate and come up with solutions which would enlighten the society, the teachers, policy makers and other key stakeholders on the plight of the physically handicapped school children. It aims at significantly addressing the problem. The researcher utilized a purely quantitative research technique/design of data collection and presentation. . This entailed the researcher reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting data by observing what people do and say as well as going to the field to collect data. Data collection was done through administration of questionnaires in carefully selected schools in Kisau division. The sampled population consisted of five schools in the zone. Out of the five schools, ten (10) teachers were interviewed from each school. Research findings revealed that the challenges that affect learners with physical handicaps in attaining their educational needs and interests are diverse but most importantly, the failure of the ministry of education to address their learning needs given the fact that they need adequate learning assistance and support as well as other learning equipments to facilitate their learning. A number of measures have been drawn up basing on the researchers observation and conclusions of the research findings. These include among others: government's drive towards providing for their learning equipments such as wheel chairs, and other learning equipments, change of teacher's attitude in a positive direction and the need for the community to dedicate efforts towards supporting learners with physical handicaps so that they can explore their potential.
- ItemThe impact of dance on church attendance by the youths in yatta division, yatta district, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2009-05) Raphael, Kimatu MusyokaThis study was about "The influence of dance to church attendance of the youths in Yatta Division, of Yatta district. Sixty youths and 60 elders were used in the study and we are selected from various Christian denominations, the study was administered by the help of selected delegates given questionnaires to distribute to 20 youths and 20 elders at the same time under the supervision of the researcher. Internment, encouragement, identification and conquer of the heart of the populace and churches are given as the reason why dance is important and should be promoted. The other school of thought discussed the extent to which church worship music has been promoted. Due to the low level of promotion and development give the need for the Pronunciation. Use of complicated, especially foreign structure instead of simple integrated ones, lack of facilities, trained personnel to handle the choirs, music vote in the church budget, critics and ill feelings about dance were cited as indicators for the negative promotion. Suggestions and recommendations were given, e.g. the need to revive the glory of church worship which involves the information of properly manned and facilitated choirs, music of simple integrated structure to be embraced to cater for a sense of belonging for every worshipper. It was also suggested that church leaders should avail the choir with the required materials and the worshipers who have the ability to donate generously to the music groups.
- ItemMotivation and academic performance of learners in early childhood education centres in Kigumo division, Murang' a south district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Mwangi Njoroge, JamesThe topic of this study was motivation and Academic Performance of Learners in Early Childhood Education Centers in Kigumo Division of Murang'a South District in Kenya. The study was carried out under three objectives, namely; determining the degree of motivation and determining if there if there is any significant relationship between motivation and academic performance. The study was based on the theory of Abraham Maslow of motivation and hierarchy of needs. In the methodology, the study relied on primary source of information, the questionnaire. The design of the study was descriptive survey research. The study utilized forty teachers to provide information. In the findings, rewards were formed to have positive effects on learner's performance. To the government, there should be provision of money to cater for teaching aids and materials necessary for learning. Policies should also be written where the topic of motivation should be included in the teacher training colleges. This will provide quality teaching in the schools. The school environment should be improved to allow enough space for learning. Play should be compulsory to all learners as it motivates them to be in school. The parents should always be involved in matters related to learning and motivation of learners whether through physical rewards or prizes during Prize giving days. Areas for further research were also proposed on the following topics: the role of Childhood Education Centres in provision of education in Kenya and the effect of using untrained teachers in Early Childhood Education Centres, on academic performance.
- ItemCauses of girl child drop out from school in Yatta District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2009-11) Nekea Janet, KalekyeThe causes of school drop out in any populat'ion are manifold and complex. The economic and social consequences of dropping out of school cause global concern, as they affect not only the individual who abandons school, but also his/her family and friends as well as the wider community and society. Recent research statistics has shown that the prevalence of girls dropping out of schools in Kenya is expanding rapidly to the distraction of the society. Kenyans cannot afford to complacent about it, thus there arise an immediate need to conduct an investigation on the factors responsible for school dropouts especially the girls hence to establishing the factors responsible for girls dropping out of school. The study adopted a descriptive research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the factors responsible for school drop out among girls in Wajir District. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. J\f\er collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures. This report provides suggestions for more effective approach to the issue of school dropouts among girls and measures based on the lessons learned from practical experience of others. It is designed for policy makers, planners and stakeholders in the education sector.
- ItemSchool feeding programmes and academic performance of pupils in central division, Moyale district, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2009-12) Mahmud, Galgalo DubaFor a number of years primary schools in Central Division of Moyale District, Kenya have not been performing very well. The researcher wanted to investigate if school feeding programmes will improve pupil's academic performance. In the study, the researcher employed descriptive design. Therefore simple survey or poll for the purpose of describing attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of the study population were used. Questionnaires were used in the collection of data. The raw data was then analyzed, presented in percentages and frequency distribution tables. The findings from the study revealed that there are few feeding programmed in the schools. It also showed that school feeding programmes significantly affected pupil's academic performance. From the findings, it implies that there is a great need for the SMCS to be sensitized and the government to add more weight in the school feeding programmes by funding and seeking donors. Suggestions for further research were to investigate the impact of absenteeism on pupils' academic performance.

- ItemThe effects of Hiv/aids on academic performance among children in Butula division of Busia district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-08) Malala, Gerald N.The main objectives of the study was to uncover the effects of HIV/ AIDS on academic performance among children, it more specifically sought to find out the factors contribution to rapid spread of HIV/ AIDS, causes of poor academic performance, and the effects of HIV/AIDS on academic performance It was carried out in Butula Division of Busia District in Kenya It was based on hypothesis that there is a relationship between HIV/ AIDS prevalence and socio- economic conditions of households, that there a relationship between academic performance on HIV/AIDS prevalence, and that academic performance is influenced by socio-economic conditions of households in Butula Division. To achieve these objectives, both primary and Secondary Data were used. Various data collection techniques were employed. These include questionnaires and interviews. The sample comprised of fifty respondents, which included twenty five primary schools children affected with HIV/ AIDS and twenty five key informants. The Data collected was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis. The study was based on structural functionalism theory by Talcott Parson which postulates that society is self-regulating system of interrelated elements with structured social relationship and observed regulates. The study found out that there several factors which contributes to rapid spread and prevalence of HIV/ AIDS in Butula Division. These factors ranges from socio-economic, cultural to psychological. It also revealed that prevalence of HIV/ AIDS do affects academic performance of children in schools although study revealed that there other factors which also affects academic performance besides HIV/AIDS.
- ItemFactors for high rate of girl child school dropout:(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-11) Kisyule, Daniel MuseeThis research is on factors for high rate of girl child school dropout, a case study of Nguni zone, in Nguni division of Kenya. The researcher in this study tried to investigate the causes of girl drop out in Nguni zone, the researcher further went on to find out the effects of such girl drop outs in the entire zone. The researcher also sought to discover the strategies that have been put in place to curb the drop out of girls in Nguni zone During the research period, the researcher used a number of data collection tools some of which included questionnaires, focus group discussions, interview, and schedules among others. The researchc-r found that girls in this zone dropped out schools due to early pregnancies over age and poor performance in school poverty among others. It was also found that the drop outs have affected the human resources in terms of employment opportunities for girls which has consequently led to high poverty levels. It was found that there was need for parents to be enlighten much on the need for education for girls as well as child rights. Guidance and counseling should be initiated in schools.

- ItemTeachers' attitude toward pupil’s academic performance in selected Secondary Schools in Nambala Division Maduwa Village, Busia District Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-11) Okemo, Sembo; SamuelThis study was carried to establish the effect of teachers attitude towards pupils academic performance ,it was guided by a number of objectives which were to examine the factors that affect of teachers competences in teaching, motivation of teachers and factors for poor pupils academic performance. The study concentrated in Nambala division in Busia District. The study focused on teachers to determine the impact of their attitude towards pupils' academic performance. Since the zone examination results keep on falling year by year. Questionnaires were issued out and random interviews were also conducted on the selected sample of 50 respondents' The findings of the study shows that, teacher attitudes has a numbers of effects on academic performance of pupils in Nambala division. Teachers attitude were identifies to affect teachers competences and motivation. The research concluded that in order to improve pupils performance in Nambala division. teachers' attitude should be positive and government, ministry of education, school administration and parent should establish systems to monitor how their teachers exercise their duties in schools to improve on pupils' performance. The study recommended that teachers should be academically and professionally qualified, works under favorable conditions of service. Encourage teachers to get training to improve their skills such as computer skills, guiding and counseling and motivate teachers that is by increasing salaries and allowances, giving prizes to teachers whose performance excel and finally promoting them.
- ItemPoverty and children academic progress: a case study of Jera Zone, Sihay Division Ugenya District-Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2011-04) Ochieng, Charles OpondoThe objective of this study was to examine the effect of poverty on the academic progress of children in Jera Zone, Sihay Division, Ugenya district Kenya. Some schools in Jera Zone were selected for this research and some children from these schools were sampled and given questionnaires to fill. The researcher based his selection on the previous examination done by these children in each class, four pupils were chosen among the top five and fur from among the bottom five in the exam. The researcher was concerned with the children's parents education, how their parents respond to payment of school levies, checking of books by parents, administering of punishment, who the domestic chores, whether they complete their homework or not, how often they fell sick, whether they access adequate food or not, whether they attended nursery school or not and their literacy. The finding was that 63% of those whose fathers have education above primary and 62% whose mothers have the same perform very well in class. 66% of those who are rarely sent home for school fees performed well also. 63% of those whose parents check their books, 59% of those who complete their home work, 57% of those who rarely fall sick perform well in school. 67% who did not attend nursery school performed very poorly in class.

The following objectives guided the study; to establish the prevalence and causes of absenteeism, to establish the relationship between absenteeism and poor academic perfonnance and to find out if absenteeism affects the children's retention in school. The respondents were teachers since they were the people with first hand info1mation about the lemners. A questionnaire was used to cany out this investigation. Finding of the study showed that absenteeism was rampant in school and the causes were both home based and school based factors, and that some learners pe1fonned poorly because of absenteeism and in some cases they dropped out of school. It was recommended that teachers change their attitude towards their learners and make learning interesting. They should also counsel the leaniers.

The research objectives were; to investigate the common types of play, to determine the factors that hinder children's play lo determine the impact of play on academic performance of early childhood education and to determine the importance of play on early childhood development in South Zone, Kakamega South district, Kenya. The methods used/or data collection were questionnaires to both the teachers and learners. The study revealed that play helps the children pe1form well in class, it makes the children like the school environment, children who play do not find difficulties in solving problems and play improves children's performance in the later years The study revealed that the most commonly games mentioned were football and net ball, hide and seek, running and jumping, riding bicycles and driving toy cars and swinging parallel play, followed by collaborative play, negotiating play. The study revealed that the factors hindering children's play were poverty •with and gender inequality. The study revealed that play makes muscular development and control of large muscles, play helps the children to develop the language skills and through play children's explore the word around them. Government should make sure early childhood centers have enough and strong playing materials before they are licensed. The community and parents should be sensitized about the importance of playing so that they also participate in children's playing activities. Schools should make sure they fulfill what is in the curriculum by involving children in playing activities. Play and play materials should be one of the key topics taught to teachers so that they understand the importance of playfully.
- ItemEffects of teaching/learning resources and educational achievement of pupils: a case study of selected primary schools in Shamata Zone Nyandarua North District(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-11) Nganga, Daniel G.This qualitative study was conducted in Shamata Zone, Ndaragwa Division, Nyandarua District of central province in Kenya aim at investigating the effects of teaching I learning resource and educational achievement of pupils. To investigate the factors contributing to the nonuse of teaching learning resources, to investigate how motivating teaching I learning resources are in classroom teaching, to investigate the impact of using teaching/learning resources on the learners performance in classroom educational task. Data was collected from the selected primary schools through questionnaires and the interview the researcher conducted with pupils who could not communicate freely with him. Finding reveals that non-use of teaching resources was as a result of the high cost to buy and require time to prepare. It was also noted that L/T resources motivate learners to answer questions by arousing their interest and concentration. Teaching I Learning resources improve general performance of learners. Teacher should diversify use of T /L resources so that 100% should be in a position of using them during classroom teaching for this very reason teachers need to attend seminars, workshops and induction course on effects of teaching /learning resources on academic achievement of learners. Teachers should be encouraged to use locally available resources to minimize the cost that may arise on purchasing teaching/learning resources. Teachers should also be encouraged to use teaching learning resources in every lesson so that they can improve general performance of learners. Teachers should embrace use of teaching/learning resource in all subjects because all subjects are equally important. Subject panels at school level should advocate on use of teaching/learning resources. The heads of subject panels should sensitize the teachers on importance of teaching/learning resources on academic attainment. The head of the institution ie H/T should also sensitize the teachers on use of T /L resources. Lastly educationalist such as zonal quasos, A.E.Os and D.E.O should be Vigorous on organizing and conducting seminars at different levels that is at schools level, zonal levels among others.
