- ItemThe imp act of Karamojong incursions on the socioeconomic development of the neighboring districts; a case study of Bunambutye sub county, Sironko district(Kampala International University, Institute of Continuing and Distance Studies, 2010-09) Kamara, Bayeeye; AugustineThis study examined the impact of the Karamojong Cattle rustling on the Socio-Economic Development of Sironko District, taking the case of Bunambutye Sub County. Development was treated on four dimensions of primary school education, Health service delivery, Agricultural Productivity and Infrastructural development. Using semi-structured questionnaire, key informant interview and Focus Group Discussion, 205 questionnaires were recovered and interesting results were found. The findings indicated that the incursions affected primary school education in the context of displacement of the families and thus the school going pupils, health service delivery was equally affected through displacement. Divergent opinion however existed on whether the cattle rustling are indeed done by the Karamojong or other parties. The community believed the raid is done with a joint effort between the Karamojong and military forces in Uganda. The cluster settlement (along the main roads and centers) indirectly led to collapse of infrastructure since they (infrastructure) became defunct in areas witl10ut settlement. It is therefore, highly recommended that the current Bulambuli District Local Government pursue deliberate actions to improve educational standards and infrastructural development in the education and health sectors. A greater concern also aroused which sighted the need to strengthen and reinforce the mandate of the regional steering body responsible for handling cases arising from Karamojong cattle rustling. This will avert the violation of the agreement by the Karamojong when granted permission to graze in the neighboring districts. The study, therefore, found a strong negative impact of the Incursion on Development.

The researcher employed purposive sampling technique to collect data from various categories of the target population. This enabled the researcher to get respondents with the actual and quality information from target population regarding ethnic conflict in Molo district.139 respondents were reached through questionnaire. 36 people were interviewed and later engaged in focus group discussion to obtain in-depth understanding regarding the much spoken historical injustices that cause conflict every five years in the last 20 years, failure by the government to hold accountable ethnic leaders who incite their ethnic community blocks for political reasons, massive destruction of property The researcher therefore recommends that priority should be given to ending the ethnic conflict. The researcher therefore recommends that functioning local conflict resolution mechanisms should be given priority, young people facilitated for income generating activities, simple early warning signs developed and agreed by the community, effective and timely interventions, establishment of village dialogue meetings, national cohesion and integration commission intervention, national land policy to heal historical injustices, issue based politics, systematic and structured learning from the past and political goodwill to resolve historical. Further, the research recommended that the government alter its conflict resolution and peace building strategic focus from one of seeking to deal with symptoms to one of protecting life and maximizing the protection of properties. Such a change in strategy is important while acknowledging that it is a state's legal responsibility to protect communities. This shift in strategy may serve to open the political and social space needed to address negative ethnicity and historical injustices that lie at the root of the ethnic conflict in Molo District.

- ItemEffects of sports betting on youth economic development in Kalerwe trading center in Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2018-02) Christelle, ShirimpuhweThe study assessed effects of sport betting on youth economic development in Kalerwe Trading Center in Uganda with four specific objectives; to find out how unemployment affect youths economic development, to find out how poverty affect youths economic development, to find out how drug abuse affect youths economic development and to determine the relationship between effects of sport betting and youth economic development. It was hypothesized that “there is no relationship between effects of sport betting and youth economic development.” Descriptive and correlation research designs were used. The data was gathered from 94 youth respondents using random sampling technique with a self-administered questionnaire. The results indicate a high grand mean and standard deviation (ii=3.15, S.D0.756) which implies that there is high level of unemployment among the youth which lead to low economic development as a result of gambling. Also, the findings indicates a high grand mean and standard deviation (ji=3 .25, S.D0.701) which means that there is high poverty level among the youth which result to low economic development as a result of sport betting. In addition, the outcome indicates a high grand mean and standard deviation (j.t=285, S.D0.876) which reveals that there is high drug abuse rate experienced among the youth which affects their economic development due to sport bet gambling in Kalerwe. Finally, the null hypothesis was rejected and its alternative positive hypothesis was considered because the P value (0.000) was less than the Alpha c~ value (0.0l).therefore, the high correlation coefficient of r=0.676** indicates that there was a significant and strong relationship between effects of sport betting and youth economic development in Kalerwe trading center. And this implies that there is significant involvement of the youth in sport bet gambling, which there after it highly affects the youths’ economic development making them dwell more in unemployment, poverty and drug abuse. Therefore, the possible recommendations were that; the government should ensure that the youth get involved in better economic ventures apart from sport bet gabling. This can be achieved if strict laws are put in place to control the betting trend of the youth. Thus, the government should put limits in terms of betting time to be only in the evening hours between 6pm and 8pm to ensure that the youth search for better and respectful forms of employment. Government should provide the youth with better business environment by setting better market and provide the youth with business funds. The youth to be guided and advised about the effects of gambling by both parents, government leaders, local leaders and religious leaders. The government to try and reduce the high rate of poverty in the area under this study through creating employment and work opportunities for the youth. Youth to venture into entrepreneurship sector and also get more knowledge through formal education system. Government to crack down those who peddle drugs in the study area and charge them accordingly. Guidance services to be provided to the youth about the effects of drug abuse. Those already addicted to be taken to rehabilitation centers for treatment in order to make them recover.
- ItemThe impact of poverty and child mortality in Uganda : a case of Kanungu district(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2018-09) Alex, Turyasingura RThe study aimed at establishing the relationship between poverty and child mortality in Kanungu district. The objectives of the study were, to determine the effects of poverty in Kanungu district, to examine the factors influencing child motility in Kanungu district and to identify the relationship between poverty and child motility in Kanungu district. These designs helped to generate information on Poverty and Child Mortality in Kanungu district. The designs employed the use of questionnaires and in-depth interviews which are to be conducted between the different types of respondents. The study was conducted in Kambuga Town Council. A sample size of 80 respondents was determined through purposive and random sampling methods. This was so because the nature of data to be generated required different techniques for better understanding of the research problem under investigation. Besides this the approach is also commonly known for achieving higher degree of validity and reliability as well as elimination of biases as per Amin (2005).The finding showed respondents who strongly agreed that Malnutrition was seen in children of poor families. People living in poverty rarely have unhealthiest foods that lead to child mortality therefore, malnutrition’s potentiating effects on prevailing infectious diseases that lead to child Mortality in Kanungu district. Majority of the respondents agreed. It is recommended that health sectors in Kanungu district should provide services to mitigate the health effects of poverty, and articulate the health-related significance of poverty on child mortality, in collaboration with other sectors to advance healthy public policy. However, no single data collection or analysis method meets all the needs for measures of child mortality therefore; further studies should be carried out.
