Using a cross-sectional survey research design, the samples employed in the study were got from the secondary Schools. The researcher made use of the questionnaire technique with the aid of interviews to collect data. The data was categorized through the use of descriptive statistics with the aid of frequencies and percentages. The major findings of the study were; English was the language used for communication in class for instruction, this was found that students' understood to a percentage of61.7% effective but the students were not fluent with a percentage of 60% . The researcher also found out that there is a relationship of poor academic performance with the way students appreciate English Language both in class and outside class activities. These findings found out that if MT is no! developed sufficiently for them to become fluent readers and writers in their own n1olh<:r tongues, their understanding of the vocabulary and syntax of their own language will he limited. This gap in their understanding of the structure of their firs! language limits !heir ability to learn_ the second language (L2). The community can be taught survival skills like running small scale businesses, maintaining water harvesting activities and having small kitchen gardens and practicing horticulture to solve the problem of poverty among the people more especially those from rural areas. Parents more especially those from rural areas should be sensitized on the importance of girls education because the study found out especially from the rural areas that most people thought that girls education was useless and that girls are meant to be married hence such attitudes need to be changed.
- ItemInternal efficiency of free primary education Tana north district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-04) Abdi Haji, DaudThis study sought to establish the level of internal efficiency of Free Primary education in Tana North District. It was found out that internal efficiency in the area of study is very low and the following factors were identified to have contributed to the problem admission of under-age children and quality of classroom practice have been identified as responsible for such a low rate of internal efficiency, parents’ involvement in the learning activities are very low, the lack of resources, some pupils study under shades of trees they actually don’t study when raining, poor feeding programs, high teacher pupil ratio etc. Repetition is one indicator of the internal inefficiency of an educational system. In Kenya, primary school repetition is high and as such, constitutes wastage particularly, and of course problematic to the state, parents and individual pupils/victims. It is conceptualized that efficiency as applied to educational achievement combines both qualitative and quantitative variables and relates inputs to outputs. An efficient educational system should enable pupils graduate within the time frame prescribed. If students spend more time than is required there is wastage. The study was carried out using descriptive survey study design. The researcher used questionnaires, check list and interview schedules as research tools. Analysis of documented data was also done to gather relevant data. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed. Qualitative data were analyzed in narration form while quantitative data were analyzed by use of 0/s, means and frequencies. Tables were used to present data for easy interpretation, To combat this phenomenon in the primary school system in Kenya, the government has resorted to experiment on some strategies namely: Compensatory Education, Competency-Based Teaching Approach, Automatic! Administrative Promotion in addition to the New Pedagogic Approach with apparently, significant results in the reduction of repeating. It is concluded that these strategies based on a pupil — centered philosophy/pedagogy tend to promote learning and consequently, increase promotion in primary schools.

Methodology, the study used descriptive correlational design. The descriptive comparative was used to compare In-service training programmes attended and Head teachers’ effectiveness according to relevant variables. The targeted population for the study was 343 teachers from the three zones and a total of 56 head teachers of public primary schools. The sample size was determined using Sloven’s formula for teachers and head teachers. The sample size of 200 respondents was selected. The sample size was determined using Sloven’s formula for teachers and head teachers. Correlation and regression analysis were applied in determining the relationship between the level of in — service training and effectiveness of Head teachers of public primary schools in Shinyalu Division, Kenya Findings, this study was set to find out the relationship between In-service training for Head teachers and Effectiveness of Head teachers of public primary Schools in Shinyalu Division-Kenya. It was guided by three specific Data analysis using means which showed that the level of In-service training for Head teachers was rated high and this was indicated by the overall mean (mean = 2.67) and this implies that on overall In-service training for Head teachers was highly advantageous to both Head teachers and Teachers of public primary Schools in Shinyalu Division-Kenya. This is shown by the fact that the sig. value was less than the maximum sig. value of 0.05 considered in social sciences. Conclusion, the researcher concluded that the level of In — service training of Head teachers is generally high, which indicated that Head teachers usually fulfill their responsibilities assigned to them. On aspect like; Your Head teacher Identifies challenges facing Teachers and deals with them appropriately this was very high. Weaknesses on aspects like; I did not have the pre-requisites e.g. qualifications, experience, and seniority was rated low which means that some Head teachers do not have the requirements of being Head teachers. A strong positive significant relationship between the level of In-service training for Head teachers and Effectiveness of Head teachers of public primary Schools in Shinyalu Division-Kenya, since the sig. value (0.000) was less than 0.05, which is the maximum level of significance required to declare a significant relationship. This implies that better In-service training for Head teachers improves effectiveness of Head teachers. Therefore basing on these results the stated null hypothesis was rejected and a conclusion is made that better In-service training for Head teachers, enhances effectiveness of Head teachers. - ItemDetermining global solar radiation incident on tilted surfaces with different tilt angles at the department of physics Makerere University(Kampala International University , College of Education, Open & Distance Learning, 2013-12) Kirya Robert, KentSolar radiation data at horizontal level, tilted surfaces and in the atmosphere is an important feature in solar energy applications such as photovoltaic systems for electricity generation, solar collectors for heating and passive solar devices. This study presents an investigation of the dependence of global solar radiation incident on a tilted surface on some meteorological parameters for different tilt angles based on measured meteorological data of sunshine, relative humidity and temperature at Makerere University. Empirical models relating global solar radiation on tilted surfaces and meteorological data were formulated using data of six months. The proposed empirical model for the estimation of daily global solar radiation on the tilted surfaces assessment based on the statistical analysis with the Mean Bias and Root Mean Square difference that is in good agreement with the measured data on a tilted surface is = —0.2614 — 0.2386(RH) + 1.5822 (~~-~) + 0.1065 (~~) H0fl 65 Tmin In comparison with the other tilt angles the model yielded a RMSE of 4.2654, with a low (poor) correlation coefficient of 0.3743 at a 95% confidence interval and MBE of 1.5801. Analysis of data for a period of 3 years, towards the verification of Akoba’s (2009) model, the study recommends a new model = —0.9227 — 0.1405 (~) — 0.0335(RH) + 3.2826 (~2~) that capitulated a RMSE of H0fl N 65 2.5985, with a correlation coefficient of 0.8863 at a 95% confidence interval and MBE of 2.3391.
