- ItemAbsenteeism and academic performance of pupils in ECPE Centres in Chil Chila Division Kericho Distrist Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-08) Chepkorior, EuniceMy purpose of the study was to find out absenteeism and academic performance of pupils in ECDE (age 6-8 years) in Chilchila Division, Kericho District The division is situated in the pockets of white highlands once colonized by British in Kericho district, faced with adverse weather condition usually very hot, dry and hilly. The area also faces a lot of economic, social and cultural problems. The general performance of the leamers in primary and secondary schools is not pleasing. This made the researcher to try to investigate problems faced together with their possible causes and solutions. The researcher explored on the important roles of head teachers, teachers in facilitating learning. According to the study the researcher felt that the most cause of poor perfonnance in national examination is absenteeism. The research explored literature written about causes and solutions to absenteeism to come up with what other people have written in relation to research problem, the research described about the research design sampling procedures, research instruments, collections of data and analysis.
- ItemThe academic performance among primary school pupils in science subject in national examinations:(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-11) Githumu Kinyanjui, JamesThe general objective of this study was to assess the learning resources and performance of pre-school children. The study was conducted in Kamwangi Division primary schools, Thika District Kenya. Ten political leaders, 20 pupils, 20 teachers and 30 community inhabitants were interviewed. Teachers, political leaders, pupils and community inhabitants participated in the study. A total of eighty (80) participants therefore participated in the study. The study question was investigated in line with the research questions of the study. The first research question was “What do you think are the major causes of the fluctuations in the performance of primary school pupils? The study discovered that; Poor learning environment, Poor teacher qualification, Poor academic syllabus, Poor pupils’ attitude toward science subject, Pupils’ absenteeism, Lack science equipment were the factors given under this research question. The second research question was “Of what impact do you think are the fluctuations in the performance of science subject among primary school pupils? The study findings revealed that; Doubt on teacher credibility, Imbalance in academic performance, Low number scientist, and discouragement in the subject were the answers given by the respondents. The third research question was “The third research question was “What do you think the National Examination Board can do to solve the fluctuations of performance among primary school performance? The answers to this question were; Provision of science equipment, Emphasis in science subject, Ban unnecessary absenteeism, Employ qualified teachers, Improve on learning environment, were the answers given. Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.

It was carried out along a number of objectives which included: assessing the relationship between students' discipline and academic perfo1mance, to examine the accessibility of students to learning materials and their effect on academic performance and to find out the effect of teachers' motivation practices on the students' academic performance. From these objectives, appropriate hypotheses were generated which were verified to establish the relationships between the variables. It was undertaken in selected Secondary schools in Gishu District. From the study, the researcher concluded that there is relationship between discipline and pe1fo1mance, there 1s a relationships between accessibility to learning materials and pe1formance of the students in Secondary schools and that there is a relationship between teachers' motivation and student's performance in secondary schools. From the study also, a number of recommendations were made which included; There is need for management to involve students in decision making on decisions that directly concern students discipline management, there is need for the schools' management to consider availing text books especially the current publications as an important aspect that could help in improving students' performance and that there is need to consider teachers achievement recognition as an important performance management ingredient.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of classroom management towards academic performance of pupils in Kandara division, Murang 'a South district. All relevant sources to this particular study were used in the review of related literature. The research employed a descriptive survey and questionnaires were in this case employed in the co/lee/ion of data from the respondents after which such data was analyzed and presented in percentages and frequency distribution tables. The findings of the study indicated that the way of conduct of teachers, availability ()f learning aids and the motivation which teachers do get affected the academic performance of learners. It was recommended that Head teachers and district education officers should endeavour to motivate teachers so that they can prepare materials for better standards of schools
- ItemCultural practices and academic performance of students in Kenya certificate of secondary education A re(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-12) Kabura, Grace WanjiruThe purpose of this study was to establish the effects of cultural practices on academic performance of students in Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) In Kakuzi Zone Murang'a South District. Specific Objectives of the study were: To establish the various cultural practices In Kakuzi Zone Murang'a South District, Determine the impact of cultural practices on the learning process In Kakuzi Zone Murang'a South District and Determine how harmful cultural practices can be eliminated In Kakuzi Zone Murang'a South District. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students, and teachers and interviews for community members. The findings revealed by 77% of the respondents that early marriages was the most common cultural practice, followed by initiation ceremonies which were mentioned by 69%, birth ceremonies were also mentioned by 66% and burial ceremonies were mentioned by 54%. The study revealed by 70% of the respondents that cultural practices have an impact on the learning process, 15% said no and 15% were not sure. The impact of cultural practices on the learning process was time wastage(60%), followed by psychological lorture(57%), exposure to society issues(43%), children feel grown up (38%) and those who said ii had no impact were 20%. According 89% respondents sensitization of the community should be done as a way to eliminate harmful cultural practices. The study recommended that, the community should be sensitized and educated on the effects of cultural practices on children and the community at large. The government should make sure that it devises means of identifying those who engage in harmful traditional practices and hence punish them. School counselors should be available in schools and also identify children who have been victims of harmful traditional practices and hence help them to avoid dropping out.

- ItemThe effect of teaching & learning materials on academic performance of ECDE learners in Mau-Narok Zone, Molo District, Rift Valley Province, Kenya(Kampala International University; College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Kipkech, Reuben K.The Kenya government through Free Primary Education (FPE) has provided teaching/learning resources (curriculum guide, course books, reference books, teachers' guides, relevant materials and equipment) to enhance teaching and learning in all public schools. In many ECDE centres, these materials are scarce if any. This study sought to determine the effects of teaching/learning materials on the academic performance among ECDE learners in Mau-Narok Zone, Molo district. Data was collected through a survey using a sample of 24 ECDE teachers selected from 6 randomly selected public primary schools in Mau-Narok zone. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data and secondary data was gathered from relevant records. Data was analyzed descriptively and findings presented using frequency tables, graphs and pie charts. The key study findings are as follows:- (I) FPE has led to high enrolment rates especially among ECDE learners (2) There is improved supply of textbook but other teaching/learning material (plant/animal charts, picture/photographs, radio/tape-recorders/TV and classroom shop) are inadequate in most schools (3) Supplies of writing materials (books & Pens) have steadily improved but not sufficient. (4) Library facilities are available but utilization still very low. (5) The academic performance of schools has generally either not changed or dropped attributed to high enrolments, teacher shortage and inadequate teaching/learning materials. The study recommends that: (I) Ministry or Education should employ more teachers to alleviate the shortage. (2) Funds allocate for per capita teaching/learning materials should be increased in proportional to pupil enrollment. ( 4) The FPE programme funds should be scaled up to cover provision of school facilities such as classrooms & desks. (5) Campaigns should be carried out to sensitize all stakeholders in education (parents, teachers & private sector) on their roles in provision of improving the teaching/learning environment in schools.
- ItemEffectiveness of free primary education policy on academic performance of primary schools in Kandara division, Kaguthi village in Kandara district, Central Province, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2011-11) Kamau Njororoge, FrancisRecent research statistics has shown that the free primary education introduced in the year 2003 had lead to a large influx of pupils into primary schools. Kenyans cannot afford to complacent about it, thus their arises an immediate need to conduct an investigation on the issue of academic performance on the influx of pupils. The study adopted a Descriptive research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the impact of free primary education on academic performance of pupils. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures. This report provides suggestions for more effective practice in the field of free primary education and measures based on the lessons learned from practical experience of the programme. It is designed for policy makers, planners and stakeholders who have responsibilities in the education sector in the country.
- ItemThe effects of corporal punishments on academic performance of learners in selected primary schools in Kenya: a case study of Katheka-Kai location, Machakos district-Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Kilonzo Nzilani, MaryThe research was conducted in Katheka-Kai location, Machakos districtEastern province, Kenya. A total of 60 (sixty) participants, 30 teachers, 10 parents, 15 students and five political leaders were involved in the study. The study question was investigated in line with the research questions of the study. The first research question sought to find out the causes of corporal punishments. The study discovered that; poor performance, poor payments, school policies, government policies, mental illness, lack of ethics, and emotionality were the factors given by the respondents. The second research question sought to find out effects of corporal punishments. The study findings revealed that; low performances, death, physical injury, dropping of subjects, fear upon the students,, and school drop outs were the answers given here by the respondents. The third research question south to find out the solutions to corporal punishments. The answers given by respondents to this researcher question were therefore as follows; punish teachers, encouragement of hard work, promotion of human right, teaching of discipline, and following of ethics were the major factors noted by respondents here. Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.
- ItemEffects of drug and substance abuse on academic performance of primary pupils in nyatike division, Nyatike district-Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2010-08) Richard, Otieno WasongaThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of drug and substance abuse on academic performance of primary pupils in Nyatike Division, Nyatike District- Kenya. Most of schools in this region have being experiencing challenges in trying to fight this menace of drug and substance abuse among the primary pupils. The eight (8) schools that participated in the study were selected random sampling technique. Both random and purposive sampling techniques were used in selecting the 80 respondents Data collected was analyzed using both descriptive and statistical techniques. The major findings were drug and substance abuse affect the academic performance of pupils negatively. The pupils who are in drug and substance abuse their class performance is normally poor. Base on these findings, it is recommended that the government, schools and the community have to join hands and embrace new techniques of drug prevention. The teachers, pupils and parent need to be equipped with skills of drug prevention and resistance skills through workshops, seminar and even life skill Education in school curriculum.

The researcher found out the importance of feeding to the children, effects of feeding programme and the impact of feeding programme on academic performance. Stratified sampling and random sampling techniques were used in this research so that each individual was given the same chance of being included in the sample. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. The number of participants involved was sixty. From the results children should be fed so as to develop holistically and perform well in class. The researcher wished to recommend that the parents should spare sometime for their children, use their resources to provide the basic needs to the child and appreciate the role of the ECD teacher.

Despite this high level of expenditure on education primary school enrolment has been declining since 1990. 2003 when gross primary school enrolment increased to 104 percent after the introduction of F.P.E. the objectives of the study will be, to identify the relationship between the family economic status and academic performance of primary school pupils and to investigate challenges posed by family social economic status on academic performance of pupils in Soy Zone. The target population will include 40 teachers 60 parents and 150 pupils in primary schools in the zone the sample size will be 20% of the target population. This study will be based on motivation theory will adopt theoretical framework. The researcher will use questionnaire and as data collection instrument. Data collected will be analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This study will benefit the policy makers at various levels by providing information on effect of social economic status on academic performance of primary schools. The findi0ng and recommendations will also enable institutions to come up with strategies to help pupils remain focused in all academic institution despite the social economic status. It is also hoped that the findings of the study will be used by various agencies working with children and to be better their knowledge.
- ItemEffects of untrained teachers on the academic performance of learners in ECDE centers within Uasin Gishu District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2010-08) Kennedy, LwalamanThe study is based on Untrained ECDE Teachers whose engagement were found to be influencing academic performance in the ECDE Centres in UasinGishu District. The study was prompted by the high rate of behaviour change observed among children after being subjected to the instruction sessions of the untrained teachers. Therefore it became necessary to research into the extend at which the untrained ECDE Teachers instructions impact on the children and some of the factors which negatively work against proper learning of children in ECDE Centres .. The study is developed in such away that established the interest of members joining the profession at the beginning or the initial years of their service. Researching into all this, it therefore required the use of comprehensive and appropriate methodology. A Case Study method has been used to unearth all the finding that were targeted in this field. Given the population that is in Early Childhood Development and Education Teachers in the Uasin-Gishu District, it was necessary that a comprehensive sampling technique be used here to enable fair and correct presentation of the views of all the teachers in the Zone. Multi-stage sampling technique became useful and the whole area has been subjected to produce the sample for the study. The Methodology has been supported by the use of structured interview as a tool for data collection. Since it was considered to be the most effective. The data analysis has been done and representation done using techniques that enable quick understanding of the finding. The finding clearly indicates the level of influence got from the untrained teachers as opposed to trained teachers. The benefit of trained teachers been highlighted. A major recommendation in the study is to the government to clearly formulate the policies that are able to motivate teachers hence they better they best as the practice in the field and in-turn reach out to more children. Some of the base issues to be components in policy formation are creation of a sole employing body to ECDE Teachers deliver while their mind is settled on the job they are doing. Recommendation is also given for more research to be done to qualify the finding documented hereby and appropriate action be taken by the Government to ratify its policies on Early Childhood Education in order to improve the quality of Basic Education which is her motto.
- ItemFamily status and girls’ academic performance in selected schools in Matinyani Zone, Matinyani Division, Kitui West District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2010-04) Mukai, MuthioThe study sought to investigate the relationship between family status and girls' academic performance. In the review of related literature, all relevant information related to the study was made of use and this helped the researcher to get a clear picture as well as guidelines concerning the problem under study. A descriptive design was employed since the whole study was about giving an explanation about a scenario. Questionnaires and interview guides were used in the collection of data. The findings of the study revealed among others: the confirmation that teaching learning aids were impacting on the learning environment. Recommendations were made and these called for government continuation to invest heavily and sustain FPE in order to provide an all inclusive education and training to all Kenyans irrespective of their region of origin, income status, gender, religion and any other disparities.

- ItemGender and girls’ academic performance in science five selected schools Chuka Division, Meru South District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2010-08) Murithi, Njeru GeorgeThe purpose of the study was to assess the effect of Gender on the academic performance of pupils in five selected schools, namely; Kibumbu, Chuka Township, Eriani, Njeru Junior and Ndagani primary schools of Karigani zone, Chuka Division, Meru south district, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the effects of location on academic performance of pupils with regard to; discipline of pupils, school drop out, infrastructure of the school, pupils participation in education, gender disparities and socio-cultural practices. The methods of data collection were questionnaires and interviews. It was also revealed that more boys participate in school than girls. Among the 10780 pupils in Chuki zone, 6,0780 were boys and 4000 were female. The study also revealed that drop out ,rate for girls is high compared to boys in the zone. The study revealed that schools inadequate learning materials do not favor girl's academic performance. 15(25%) of pupils respondents responded to adequate learning materials while 45(75%) of pupils said learning materials were inadequate. The study revealed that enrolment and performance of girls in rural areas is lower compared to urban areas. According to the study, punishment levels were high and led to girls' drop out of school which interfered with their academic performance. Teachers responded to punishments as a way of instilling morale in pupils to perform better in class. The study revealed that effects of gender inequality in education effected from teacher student interactions, student grouping, class room climate and assessment strategies. The study revealed that teachers, parents mostly in rural areas do not involve them selves in girls' education life. If a girl is lucky to attain school fees from their parent, that is enough. This is shown in the responses for both teachers and pupils whereby 10 (16.7%) and 5 (8.3%) respectively mentioned about parents caring. Govermnent was recommended to increase the funding of primary education to improve the existing infrastructure, payments and other teacher budgets which caters for female education since educating a girl is educating a nation. The last objective was summed up by the respondents views on what would be the solution to girls' poor academic performance in sciences. The respondents requested for the community sensitization on the importance of girls education bearing in mind that educating a girl is educating a nation, teachers requested the government to improve on school learning facilities in order to make girls comfortable in both classes and outside, pupils requested in the revision of the school curriculum to suit girls and lastly respondents were of the view that single schools should be encouraged for girls confortability.

This was intended to determine the profile of respondents in the area of study, determine the effects of learning aids towards the academic performance of learners in the area of study and suggest possible remedies towards effective use of learning aids so as to uplift the academic performance of pupils in Kasese Sub County. In the course of study, all other people's contentions and ideas in line with the topic under study were revisited and the whole study employed a descriptive survey design. It was realized from the findings of the study that the best way of teaching pupils is to provide them with adequate learning aids and a conducive learning environment as well. A deduction was made that teachers never prepared a variety of learning aids. This drove the researcher to make a radical decision which called for more government support through its agencies to see to it that all the necessary learning materials are in place within schools.

The study shall be carryout in September through December. Dara shall recollected by use of questionnaires, in the fields and personal observations 10.forma sample of50 respondents by stratified random sampling. The study expected to have reliable information that could be used by teachers to improve academic performable in schools. It was found out that several factors led to malnutrition: namely the personal aspect, school factors, family and her social factors. It was also found that malnutrition is high among the illiterate and poor parents. The researcher recommends that parents should be sensitized on the academic roles hence be reduced lo 1:70 ratio. This •will help the teacher to interact freely with the pupils. The researcher also recommended that the minister of education did not only appoint education officers but also train them properly so as to enable them to help teachers to deal with malnutrition makers effectively
