    Domestic violence and academic performance of learners in selected secondary schools of Kakuuto Sub County, Rakai District

    he purpose of the study was to examine the impact of domestic violence on academic performance of learners. The study was guided by three specific objectives which include; i)to Find out the types of domestic violence and the possible causes ,ii) Find out the effects of domestic violence on the school academic performance pupils within area and iii) Suggest way of eliminating or reducing the occurrence of domestic violence. The study employed a descriptive correlation design that used both interview guide and questionnaires and a sample size of 80 respondents out of 100 was used in that study. From the findings, the study revealed that 37.5 percent agreed that economic stress was commonly the cause of domestic violence in Kakuuto sub county, Rakai district while 31.25 percent said it was jealousy as the common cause of domestic violence in Kakuuto sub county, Rakai district, 18.75 percent reported competition, yet 12.5 percent of the rest were in favor of pornography as the common cause of domestic violence in Kakuuto sub county, Rakai district. The study recommends that owing to the widespread prevalence of various forms of domestic violence in the Kakuuto sub county, different education sector stakeholders should address domestic violence as a social vice in order to improve academic performance and school participation of children coming from the slum areas. Research is needed that advances the current understanding of the prevalence and effects of childhood exposure to domestic violence, and the impact of resilience and risk factors, so that policymakers and practitioners can design interventions sufficient to address the size, nature, and complexity of the problem.

    Influence of drug abuse on the academic performance of learners in the selected schools of Makindye Division, Kampala District

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the Influence of Drug Abuse on the Academic Performance of Learners in the Selected Secondary Schools of Makindye Division. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the relationship between drug abuse and the discipline of girls, identify the common drugs abused by girls and the effects of drugs on students. The methods used for data collection were questioimaires to the students and interviews with the teachers. The findings revealed that students who abused drugs had indiscipline cases and were therefore lilcely to drop out of school. It was revealed that the conunon drugs girls abused were alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. The study that drugs mostly affected the schooling of students since they did not concentrate in class. The study recommended that the ministry of the education and school authorities should provide preventive measures by checking what enters in school and also discourage students from taking drugs and also counsel those that are already taking drugs. The community and parents are important in a child’s life. They should therefore be sensitized and encouraged to participate in all programs that aim to solve the problem of drugs. The government should also include them in all the plans they make concerning the fight against drug abuse.

    Influence of guidance and counseling on academic performance of visually impaired children in Rugaeama sub county Ntungamo district~ Uganda

    The purpose of the study was to investigate the Influence of Guidance and Counseling on Academic Performance of Visually impaired Children in Rugarama Sub county Ntungamo District Uganda . The specific objectives of the study were to; identify the causes of visual impairment Children in Rugarama Sub County, Ntungamo District Western Uganda, Identify the methods of counseling that are effective on visually impaired Children and investigate the impact of guidance and counseling on academic performance of learners with visual impairment Children. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers, interviews with the parents and focus group discussions with the pupils. The study revealed by 60% that learners with visual impairment sought guidance and counseling services. However the respondents complained that most schools do not have qualified counselors to handle visually impaired learners. The most common mentioned cause of visual impairment was hereditary reasons which were mentioned by 90% of the respondents. Group counseling was mentioned by 84%, 76% mentioned individual counseling, 72% mentioned motivation, 64% mentioned parent and child counseling and 56% mentioned behavior counseling. The study also revealed by 52% of the respondents that guidance and counseling has improved the academic performance of visually impaired. The study recommended that; Counselors who specifically look at cases of visually impaired learners should be trained and made available in schools to help visually impaired children. The Ministry of Education to beef up more aggressive awareness campaigns among various stakeholders concerning the negative attitudes towards the visually impaired. The Ministry to empower all the teachers in the country with appropriate professional skills on how to cater for the visually impaired learner’s education. This is the acknowledgment of the need to improve the well-being of all segments of population among other recommendations.

    Psychological impacts of armed conflicts on academic performance in primary and secondary schools in Northern Uganda:

    In Summary the war in northern Uganda (West Nile, Acholi, Karamoja, Lango and Teso Sub regions) has greatly impacted on the lives of the people of these areas. The brutal killings, abduction, rape/defilement, maiming and all kinds of atrocities suffered by the unarmed and defenseless civilians at the hands of the rebels, left the population so distraught and traumatized. Survivors of the atrocities have deep seated psychological damages which are usually reflected even in the academic performance of school going section of the population. The above scenario is not only unique to northern Uganda. Countries such as Southern Sudan, Somalia, DRC, Tasikistan, and Iraq have experienced poor academic performance due to protracted wars. Armed conflicts generally result into lawlessness, total destruction of social services, infrastructures and above all else, psychological, Emotional, Intellectual and moral defects in society. In the case of northern Uganda, the researcher wanted to focus mainly on the Psychological effects of armed conflict on academic performance of young people at the level of primary and secondary education. Thus in order to come up with this research and the compiled report as well, he obtained an introduction letter from the University to enable him carry out the research. This letter was given to the District Education Officer of Pader District, Inspector of Schools in Pader, to respective Head-teachers of every school where data were obtained from. Thereafter, permission was granted to the researcher to go ahead with this research. The researcher managed to reach to Rackoko Primary School, Puranga Primary School, Rackoko Comprehensive Secondary School, Kilak Primary School, Agago Primary School, Army Primary School, Achol P11 Army Secondary School and Pader Girls Academy, parents from the nearby villages were also interviewed but that was after assuring them of the confidentiality of their view regarding the ideas they would give in regards to the research.
