- ItemCauses of alcoholism and drug abuse among the youths aged 15 to 20 years in Kansanga, Kampala District(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2011-05) Arinaitwe, SimonThe study was carried in kansanga, Kampala district. It was carried out to assess the causes of drug abuse and alcoholism among youth aged 15-20 years in this area. The study used qualitative and survey designs to assess the causes of drug abuse and alcoholism among the youth aged 15-20 years in kansanga, Kampala district The study population included the youth, local authorities, parents and medical workers. A sample of 150 respondents was selected using simple random and purposive sampling research technique. Data was collected using interview guides, observation techniques and questionnaires from both primary and secondary sources. Collected data was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively and was tabulated. The study investigated the factors, types and causes of drug abuse and alcoholism in the area among youth. The study revealed that culture is the main cause of drug and alcoholic abuse among youth aged 15-20 years in Kansanga. The study suggested that youth should stay away from drugs and focus on their education in order to be responsible citizens and that the elders should not take alcohol insight of the young ones. According to the study, it was seen that peer pressure was another major cause of alcohol and drug abuse among youth; it was therefore recommended that parents should provide enough parental guidance to the youth and also encouraged them to attend youth Christian camps. The study also recommended that laws against drug abuse and alcoholism should be strengthened to people below 18 years, taking youth to rehabilitation centers those who abuse drugs and provide them with considering services concerning effects of drug abuse and alcoholism. - A sensitization programme should be taken up government to reach and to the youth concerning the danger effects of abusing drug and alcohol.
- ItemEffects of alcoholism on the spread of HIV/AIDS among youth in Makindye division(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-09) Tendo, Anold IvanThe purpose of the study was to examine the effects of alcoholism on the spread of HIV/AIDS among youth in Makindye Division. The study had three specific objectives, which included) to examine how HIV/AIDS is spread among youths of Makindye Division and iii) to examine how HIV/AIDS among youths of Makindye Division. The study employed a descriptive correlation design that used both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. The findings indicated that most respondents (48%) were females who are in vulnerable groups, aged between 15-18 years (52.5%), pertaining the class of respondents, majority had reached diploma level with a frequency of 52.5 percent and secondary with a frequency of 24.3 percent and minority were primary with a frequency of 1.4% followed by 12.5. percent. The level of the effects of alcoholism was general often with mean (3.1901) which indicated that most of respondents agreed. The level of the spread of HIV/AIDS is generally often (average mean=3.1635) they strongly agreed. And also indicated a positive significant relationship between the level of effects of alcoholism and spread of HIV among youths(r=0.723, sig. =0.000) the more the government and non-government organizations have tried to eliminate the effects of alcoholism; the adolescents are now able to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. The researcher recommends there is need to sensitize youths to adopt the effects of alcoholism management strategies. There is need to uplift the educational level of HIV positive adolescents since most of them had diplomas.

- ItemFactors contributing to drug abuse and alcoholism among the youths aged 12 to 17 years in Bwaise(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2010-11) Alikoba, HellenThe study investigated the factors responsible for drug abuse in Bwaise. The main objective of the study was to find out the major types of drugs and alcohol being abused by the youth in Bwaise, The study used a descriptive research design to describe issues relating to factors contributing to drug abuse and alcoholism among the youths. The study population included the local people, community leaders and youths in the area. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling procedures were used in the study to obtain a sample of 70 respondents from the study population. Data was collected from both primary and secondary sources using questionnaires and interview guides. Data was analyzed qualitatively in themes that reflect the study objectives. The study found out that the major causes of drug abuse and alcoholism among the youths were; idleness, culture, peer influence, mass media, examination pressure and religion. These caused have attributed to effects like suicidal thoughts, mental illnesses, depression, verbal abuses, loss of weight and appetite, prolonged illnesses, fights among others. And among the drugs abused include Cannabis, tobacco, Opiates, Nicotine, Cocaine, Marijuana among others. The study therefore recommended that parents should provide enough parental guidance to their children and also encouraging them to attend youth religious camps. The government should also put strict laws regarding drug abuse and alcoholism especially to the youths below 18 years as well as taking youths practicing drug abuse and alcoholism to rehabilitation centres where they can receive counseling and guidance to reshape their lives hence becoming responsible citizens of the nation. And lastly youths should stick to God for he is the source guidance for mankind.
