- ItemCommunity conflict on academic performance in secondary schools in Djiboutl , a case study of Balho district(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2013-12) Omar, AbdiThis study was done to investigate community class conflict on academic performance. The research used largely qualitative depending on actual observations of behavior and the qualitative analysis of data. Communal class is a personal matter that was not openly discussed by the subject. The researcher adopted the strategic sampling. This was where the population was divided into groups and random samples was taken from within each group bearing the populations as a whole. The research instruments which were mainly used were questionnaires, survey and school professional records. The most used instrument in this study is questionnaire. The researcher sought permission from relevant schools where letters were written to the heads of the instruction. The data collected was analyzed by using tables and pie chart. The researcher found out that children from low income families perform poorly in the high cost schools while the children from high cost income perform also poorly in low cost schools. One of the recommendations was that the ministry of education, science and technology should identify the problems faced by students experiencing communal class conflict and classify such children as special needs cases.
- ItemThe effect of gender issues on the academic performance of learners in schools: a case study of Lodwar district, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2013-05) Ivy, MworiaThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Lodwar district in Kenya. Specific objectives of the study was to: examine the impact of gender on academic performance of learners in schools in Lodwar district and to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys in schools. This chapter presents the methodological aspects. It describes the research design sampling design. Study area and sample research procedures. data collection instruments, data analyzed and limitations of the study The methods used for data collection were face to face interviews, carried out on to parents: Questionnaire distribution to students and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The findings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner’s negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools arc boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The government non-government organizations, publishers, and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking. This paper intended to investigate gender differences in the academic ethnic and academic achievement among students. The data collected from students and teachers, was through the survey method. A recommendation to the NGOS is that can play an effective role in assisting the State to complement the public education system and to improve its effectiveness. As various survey revealed that the experimental approaches of the NGOs have successfully tackled many shortcomings in schooling. The Government of Kenya should create an atmosphere of NGO-Govt. alliance to achieve universal primary education as an urgent need. Parents should provide all support (financial, moral emotional) to their children irrespective to gender enhance their academic performance.
- ItemThe influence of monitoring and evaluation on academic performance of UPE schools: a case of Nkondo Sub-County Buyende District(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-01) Namukoma, NanzerenaThis research report on the influence of monitoring and evaluation on academic performance of UPE schools was carried out in Nkondosubcounty, Buyende districtUganda, its specific objectives included to identify the maj or areas monitored in UPE schools in Nkondosubcounty, examine the significance of monitoring and evaluation in academic performance of schools in Nkondosubcounty, assess the causes of poor performance of pupils in UPE schools in Nkondo sub-county and to come up with possible measures to improve the academic performance of UPE schools. The literature review encompasses relevant literature from different authors, documentary reviews, Journals and internet literature, to reflect on the significance of monitoring and evaluation, causes of poor academic performance of UPE schools and the major areas monitored and monitoring types within an organisation. The study used descriptive design which was explanatory in nature and it was based on quantitative and qualitative approaches. It covered a sample of one hundred twenty (120) respondents. The data instruments used were mainly the questionnaires and interviews.Study findings showed that the major areas monitored in UPE schools are mainly budgetary resources, procedures, time schedules and sometimes quality. The significance of Monitoring and Evaluation was identified by be promotion of academic performance, transparency in resource utilization, reduce teachers’ absenteeism, and also helps to provide reliable feedback to and from all stakeholders. 1-lowever, the major causes of poor academic performance in UPE schools were reported to be frequent pupil’s absenteeism, lack of parental support, lack of teachers’ commitment, indiscipline among students and poor motivation of teachers. It was therefore concluded that effective monitoring and evaluation in UPE schools is very crucial because in this process gaps can easily be identified and effective mechanisms are implemented for improvement. It is therefore recommended that implementation of monitoring and evaluation direct from the District and National level from the ministry of education and sports should be encouraged to identify the problems and issues affecting the students, teachers and the schools in general.
