- ItemDiscipline and academic performance among secondary school students in Mbale town, Mbale district(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2018-05) Gidudu, DavidThe purpose ofthis study was to find out the influence of discipline on students’ academic performance in Mbale Town, Mbale District. The study was guided by three objectives; to establish how the administration of school rules and regulations affect students’ academic performance ; to establish how observance to time management affect students’ academic performance in secondary schools and to analyze how the administration of punishments affect students’ academic performance in secondary .This study was conducted in five secondary schools which were; Mbale secondary school, Nkoma secondary school, Mbale High school, University Link high school and Town side High school.The study employed descriptive research design where questionnaires and interview guides were the main instruments for data collection. Data was collected and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively by use of frequencies, percentages and narrative representation respectively then later presented in tables for interpretation. Findings shows that the first three schools has suitable school rules and regulations, use and implement different mechanism, apply fair and consistence punishments, also had suitable rules and regulations contrary to last two schools which had unsuitable rules and regulations and do not implement different mechanisms, apply unfair and inconsistence punishment and had written rules which had no supervision. Conclusion, students should be aware of school rules and regulations, fair, consistence punishments, same mechanisms to communicate, motivation, recruitment and selection procedure to teachers and students. Recommendation, there should be meetings between schools to share experiences on disciplinerelated matters vis-â-vis academic performance. Parents-teachers relationship should be established. Further research can be carried out focusing on the role of school discipline on students’ academic performance in other parts the country or the whole country for comparative analysis V
- ItemDiscipline and students’ academic performance in UCE: a case study of Bukooli College Bugiri(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2017-05) Ganagwa, IsaacThe purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of discipline to the academic performance amongst the students of Bukooli College Bugiri District. The specific objectives of the study were to establish the influence of teacher qualities on the academic performance of students and to find out the influence of school facilities on academic performance of students of Bukooli College Bugiri. The methods used for data collection was questionnaire and interview guides to students, teachers and head teacher of the school involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students and school facilities have a direct impact on the students’ academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations.
- ItemThe effect of discipline of learners’ academic performance in Selected Primary Schools, Suneka Zone, Kiisi South District, Nyanza Province, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Mitunda., Grace; KA descriptive study was undertaken in selected primary schools of Suneka zone with a purpose of investigating the effect of discipline on student’s performance in school. The following objectives guided the study; establish the history of discipline of students in schools and how it affected their academic performance; to establish environmental factors that influence indiscipline of pupils; to identify the common cases of indisciplined children in the primary schools of Suneka. The following were discovered; that discipline was partly to be blamed on teachers who inflicted some form of abuse to the learners. In other words the expressive culture of most schools reflected some form of indiscipline. It was also found out that some learners abused substances and others were involved in gangsters activities. These were all contributing to indiscipline in schools. It was recommended that guidance and counseling services be put in place.

The specific objectives of the study were to determine if poor physical facilities affects the implementation of free primary education. Determine if lack of enough trained teachers affects the implementation of free primary education. Determine if high Pupil-Teacher ratio affects the implementation of free primary education. Determine if poverty level of parents affects the implementation of free primary education. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires which were administered to the staff members of the schools who were involved in the study. Findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that free primary education had been affected as regard to the quality of education. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the making a policy that ensures that the quality of education is not compromised.
- ItemEffect of gender issues on the academic performance of learners in secondary schools: a case study of Thunguru Secondary School(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2009-08) Maina, James.MThe essence of this study was to determine the effect of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Othaya, Nyeri District, Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: examine the impact of gender on academic perfonnance of learners in Kiobatek district and to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys in Othaya division. The methods used for data collection were face to face interview, which were carried on with parents, Questionnaires were distributed to students and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The findings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner's negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools are boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that, the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The govermnent non-government organizations, publishers and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking.
- ItemEffects of a ban on holiday teaching on academic performance in secondary schools in Tororo Municipality(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2017-12) Alado, PheibeThe study sought to establish the effects of ban on holiday teaching on academic performance in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. This study aimed to establish the effect of abolishing holiday teaching on academic performance in secondary schools, students’ perception of the ban on holiday teaching practice and identify strategies schools have adopted to offer remedial classes in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. The research method adopted was descriptive cross sectional research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The researcher used sample of senior three students, teachers and head teachers answer sample size of 175 respondents. Quantitative data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square tests at a 0.05 level of significance. The questionnaires and interview guide were the data collection instruments. The study found out that the ban on holiday teaching tuition did not negatively affect academic performance in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. The study established that holiday teaching was stressful; most students had little interest in it and could fatigue them. The study established that holiday teaching was a strategy for syllabus coverage. It was therefore recommended that: the MoE&S strengthens its surveillance team to prevent the practice, the MoE&S strongly and impartiall enforces the policy on holiday teaching practice, and the MoE&S gives a circular to head teachers identifying general strategies for remedial classes for all schools to observe in the teaching time, that there is need to reduce syllabus content to manageable levels.
- ItemThe effects of computer studies on academic performance of secondary school students: a case study of Kapsabet Zone, Nandi District- Kenya.(Kampala International University.College of Education, 2009-08) Rose, JepkoechThis study is about effect computer science on education in seconda;y schools in Kapsabet zone, Nandi District Kenya. It was carried out in Kapsabet high school, Nandi Girls and Kapsabet Mixed High School. Through the research it was established computer studies have great effect on education. Research showed that there is an explosion of knowledge the world over which has brought about multiple uses of computer for various purposes such as storage of ieformation, management of production and manufacturing processes among others. Education depends on efficient handling of information and has been regarded as the key in social and economic mobility. It was established that there was great need and interest in computer stuclies, though most schools were not equipped with computer facilities. Most respondents (65%) agreed that the few computers they have are always put to use and those who do not own any have to seek for those services elsewhere. They also expressed the need that computer should be taught in schools. Most of the respondents (65%) confirmed that they were not well acquainted with the computer operation. It was also observed that co_mputer scie_nce is relevant to the field of education and others. It was discovered that respondents were fully aware of computer applications. All respondents (I 00%) mentioned various applications known to them such as information storage, management, control and production. 90% of the respondents believed that the use of computer was widespread and will keep on increasing as development and knowledge increases on every front in the world. Therefore for effective decision-making, i1iformation has to be managed effectively; and this can be achieved if students are provided with training in computer operation and application. This is a machine that will affect their lives and be more used more in every sphere of their lives at home, school and work places. Since Kenya is a growing economy, it needs education irfrastructure to be established to support computer studies in schools and tertiary institutions. As confirmed by the education officer in the research, it is the students', the schools' and the governments' responsibility to realize that computer science is fundamental to education and development. Therefore they do well to support the program for greater educational and national development.

Elgon district. The general objective or purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of drug abuse on the academic performance of students in Mt. Elgon district While reviewing related information on the topic of study, the researcher sought for ideas of prior scholars whose suppositions and contentions were similar the problem under study. The study employed a descriptive design as this had been viewed as the most appropriate design and data was analyzed using percentages and frequency tables. The findings from the study revealed that drug abuse had had a significant impact on the academic performance of students in the area of study and a recommendation was made that called for joint intervention of all concerned authorities to address the escalating problem.

- ItemThe effects of teacher’s attitude on students' academic performance: a case study of Rongo division,(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2009-11) Grace, Otieno A.The study sought to establish the effect of teachers conduct on students' academic performance and was driven by Four objectives: to establish the effect of teachers perception on students’ performance in Rongo division, to find out how the teachers emotions affect students’ performance in Rongo division, to establish how teachers behavior affects students’ performance and to find out how teachers guidance affects students’ performance. To achieve these objectives the researcher sampled 80 respondents from various schools in Rongo divisions. The study utilized qualitative research methods; two data collection instruments were used: Structured questionnaire and Interview guides. The collected data was presented in tabular and analyzed statistically to decipher findings. The major finding of the study was that the emotions of the teacher directly affected the students’ performance and conclude by stating that teachers should control their emotions at their places of work and that the perception of teachers was no longer of high regard and this was attributed to the low salaries and motivation associated with the profession. The study indicated that the government should introduce motivational incentives and revise teachers' salaries so that they can be able to fully sustain themselves while concentrating on their work.

- ItemFactors affecting academic performance of students in secondary schools in Ruhaama Sub County Ntungamo - Uganda(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2009-08) Phillip, BigambwensiThe study sought to investigate Factors Affecting Academic Performance of Students in Secondary Schools in Ruhaama Sub County Ntungamo-Uganda with specific objectives which include; to identify the extent to which psychosocial problems affect the level of academic performance, to identify the effect of Peer Pressure on the behavior of secondary school students, to identify the roles of school authorities in helping the students to cope with adolescence and to identify the variation between male and female students in academic performance . The study developed a correctional design employing both quantitative and qualitative methods in the collection of data and its analysis. The study included 111 respondents, teachers and students. From the study, it was found out that psychosocial problems affect the level of academic performance as proved by 70%. It was also found out that the peer pressure affects behaviors of secondary school students as the majority 93% agreed. When identifying the roles of school authorities in helping students to cope with adolescence, it was found that schools help students in their endeavors as proved by 80% which was majority. In identifying the variation between male and female students in academic performance, findings indicated that there is variation as it was reported by 68% majority of respondents. It was concluded that psychosocial problems affect adolescent students in their schools as well as peer pressure. It is there fore recommended that schools should provide career guidance to students that is; education focused, and counseling services through Gender Desks, it should be provided to relieve the affected students, for psychosocial support and for their academic improvement. It should be a responsibility of every body
- ItemFactors affecting the girl child’s academic performance in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) among selected, schools in Tiriki East Division, Hamisi District Western Province Kenya(Kampala International University, School of Education, 2008-08) David Christopher, OtienoThe study reveals that participation of the girl child in education is generally low. Girls are more marginalized especially because of the gender roles, inadequate access to resources. Education is not a priority for them; they provide labour in households to subsidize the meagre resources of the family. The research was carried out among selected secondary schools in Tiriki East, Division, Hamisi District, Western Province, Kenya; ten schools were selected. The study adopted a descriptive research design and qualitative design and analysis. This was intended to get the whole concept of the girl-child’s performance in relation to KCSE. The Study sampled ten institutions. The subjects involved were class teachers and girl students. A sample of 90 respondents was used though 60 participated in the study. Questionnaires were administered to two groups that is class teachers and female students. After collecting the questionnaires, the information was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness information obtained from the research was presented and analyzed using tables, pie charts and bar graphs.
- ItemFamily roles and academic performance of girls in selected secondary schools in Bungoma District(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2007-08) Nasimiyu, Gladys LuchwalaThe study was carried out under the title Family Roles and Academic Performance of Girls in Selected Secondary Schools in Bungoma District. It was set to establish the causes of desimal performance of girls in secondary schools and find possible solutions to the problem. The study followed a descriptive research design where both qualitative and quantitative research design was adopted. The quantitative techniques were used in collecting and analyzing data from teachers and students. Three tools were employed to gather data; Observation, interview schedules and questionnaires. The qualitative technique on the other hand was used to assess factors affecting students academic performance in respect to attitudes towards school and studies for both girls as well as teachers. Through the research done in eight schools randomly selected in the division of Kimilili, data collected in form of interview schedules observation and questionnaires, the following factors emerge as responsible for the poor performance of girls in Kimilili division; work schedule 25 percent, home environment 31.24 percent, resource endowment 6.24 percent and school environment was 6.24 percent.
