College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Kamau, Seraphine W.The main purpose of the study was to investigate factors affecting academic performance of primary pupils at Lang’ata division Nairobi province, Kenya The specific objectives of the study were to determine; whether Discipline of students affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils, whether Quality of teachers affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils and to determine whether Facilities in schools affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students and interviews with the teachers The study found out that discipline was among the reasons why pupils perform poorly in class. It was established that pupils who are indiscipline were likely to perform poorly in school and also drop out of school and 45% of the respondents agreed to that. 75% of the respondents agreed that teachers who are well paid perform better than those who are underpaid. 89% of the respondents agreed that lack of enough reading and learning materials is a hindrance to pupil’s academic achievement. The study recommended that the government and policy makers should identify the reasons why pupils perform poorly in school and devise means to iron out the problem. Teachers should be included in plans to improve on the academic performance of pupils because they contribute greatly to the achievement of a child.

- ItemAn assessment of Teachers motivation on Academic Performance of Primary Pupils in Tabaka/ Rigena Zone Nyamarambe Division Gucha South District Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2010-11) Osoro, Earnest R.The research project topic is an assessment of teacher's motivation on academic performance of primary pupils in Tabaka Zone Nyamarambe Division Gucha South District, Kenya. The research project was divided in five chapters which dealt exclusively in all matters that the researcher believed would be of value to the research project. The objectives of the study were to find out whether the quality of education has changed on inception of free primary education. The challenges faced by teachers on introduction of free primary education and the possible solutions to the challenges. The data was collected from the respondents of the school of the schools. The research tools included questioners, oral interviews. The findings from the research are in confirmation to the stake holders (2002) who provide a tenable suggestion, recruitment, salary, and promotion policies that encourage the selection, training, and rewarding of the most capable administrators and teachers, and in-service training measures that permit their constant refurbishment, can go a long way in improving the quality of education through strengthening teacher morale even where finances are scarce. The government in its endeavor to make free primary education sustainable should make sure that allocation of funds aimed at ensuring sustainable education are well managed. In conclusion the introduction of free primary education is a noble idea in line with the millennium development goal and also the Kenya vision 2030.
- ItemBehavior and Academic Performance of Learners with Hearing Impairment in Inclusive Mixed Primary Schools Ojola Zone, Kisumu Municipality, Kenya(Kampala international international : College of Education,Open and distance Learning, 2008-12) Peter, Otieno OmwosoThe research intends to carry out research with hearing disability in the Ojoa, Kisumu municipality. The researcher expects to find out the academic performance of these learners. Data was collected from the field, presented, analyzed, tabulated using percentages, frequency and tables. Findings indicated that, the degree of hearing impairment can vary widely from person to person. Some people have partial hearing loss, meaning that the ear can pick up some sounds; others have complete hearing loss, meaning that the ear cannot hear at all (people with complete hearing loss are considered deaf different scholars) The study shows that, complications during pregnancy or birth can greatly cause hearing impairment among learners. Some babies are born with hearing impairment due to infections or illnesses that the mother had while she was pregnant. The study employed researcher devised instruments like Questionnaires, which were used as primary data to establish the truth about the level of behavior of the learning impaired learners.

- ItemCultural Practices and Academic Performance of Students in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education: A Case Study of Kapsokwony Division, Mt. Elgon District Kenya(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of education, 2012-08) Chesebe, Masai MicahThis study sought to establish the effects of cultural practices on academic performance of students in Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) in Kapsokwony division, Mt. Elgon District. Specific Objectives of the study were: To establish the various cultural practices In Kapsokwony division, Mt. Elgon District, Determine the impact of cultural practices on the learning process in Kapsokwony division, Mt. Elgon District and Determine how harmful cultural practices can be eliminated in Kapsokwony division, Mt. Elgon District. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students, and teachers and interviews for community members. The findings revealed by 77% of the respondents that early marriages was the most common cultural practice, followed by initiation ceremonies which were mentioned by 69%, birth ceremonies were also mentioned by 66% and burial ceremonies were mentioned by 54%. The study revealed by 70% of the respondents that cultural practices have an impact on the learning process. 15% said no and 15% were not sure. The impact of cultural practices on the learning process was time wastage(60%), followed by psychological torture(57%), exposure to society issues(43%), children feel grown up (38%) and those who said it had no impact were 20%. According 89% respondents sensitization of the community should be done as a way to eliminate harmful cultural practices. The study recommended that, the community should be sensitized and educated on the effects of cultural practices on children and the community at large. The government should make sure that it devises means of identifying those who engage in harmful traditional practices and hence punish them. School counselors should be available in schools and also identify children who have been victims of harmful traditional practices and hence help them to avoid dropping out.
- ItemDrug Abuse and Academic Performance of Learners in Kaplamai Division, Trans-Nzoia East District- Kenya(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of education, 2011-04) Jane, Maina WairimuThe study examined the impact of drug abuse on academic performance of learners. The general objectives of the study were to investigate the causes of drug abuse and its impact on academic performance of learners. The study took a quantitative approach to collect and interpret the data. The study also employed a descriptive survey design to carry out the study and used a questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The population targeted was primary school teachers and ECD teachers who were sampled using the simple random sampling to get the teachers who would fill the questionnaire. These teachers were used to investigate the effects of drugs abuse to learning in ECD centres and lower primary school. After the researcher has analyzed the questionnaire, it was established that there is drug abuse in the division. It was also found out that the most commonly abused drug is alcohol. It is also evident that drug abuse has negative effects to learning for instance leamers who indulge in drug abuse have low academic achievements and indiscipline cases. The researcher recommends that trained personnel handles cases of drug abuse to stop its effects on learning and be done through guiding and counseling.

- ItemThe Effect of Gender Issues on the Academic Performance of Learners in Schools:(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2010-05) Sulumetikaba, WilliamThe purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Getai primary school Gucha distsrict Nyacheki division, Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: examine the impact of gender on academic performance of learners Getai primary school Gucha distsrict Nyacheki division, Kenya. And to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys in schools. The methods used for data collection were face to face interview, which were carried on with parents, Questionnaires were distributed to pupils and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The findings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner's negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools are boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that, the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The government non-government organizations, publishers and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking.

The study was guided by specific objectives that included; identifying the cause of poor health, the effects of poor performance on academic performance and the relationship between poor health and academic performance. The study was descriptive and analytical in nature where purposive sampling was used to select population. It employed 60 respondents. Data were analysed and presented using frequencies and percentages and were tabulated. The major findings of the study were; most of the respondents were males, causes of unemployment are technological advancement, solutions to the causes were poverty, drought. Effects were mental agility, mental disorders and illness. And the relationship included daily attendance and negative relationship.

Kenyans cannot afford to complacent about it, thus their arises an immediate need to conduct an investigation on the issue of academic performance on the influx of pupils. The study adopted a Descriptive research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the impact of free primary education on academic performance of pupils. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures. This report provides suggestions for more effective practice in the field of free primary education and measures based on the lessons learned from practical experience of the programme. It is designed for policy makers, planners and stakeholders who have responsibilities in the education sector in the country.
- ItemEffects of A Ban on Holiday Teaching on Academic Performance In Secondary Schools In Tororo Municipality.(Kampala International University ,College of Education, Department of Open and E-distance Learning, 2019-05) Emmanuel, OkothThis study sought to examine the effect of teenage pregnancy on socio-economic aspects of girls in the selected schools of Budaka district specially to identify the causes of teenage pregnancy among the girls, the socio-economic consequences of teenage pregnancies, and investigated the measures that would be taken to curb this problem. The respondents used in the study were local leaders, teachers, parents who filled a s~mi-structured questionnaire containing items which had been formulated from the objectives. Findings showed that in Budaka district, it was established that young girls are becoming pregnant mostly because peer pressure and bad company. It was also discovered that due to economic hardships some girls go out with men to get some of their requirements and end up becoming pregnant. Those parents did not care much about what their daughters did with their friends. More factors that were hinted on by the respondents include the negative media influence and pinpointed films. It was established that teenagers lacked relevant education about sex ~and how to handle sexuality. Recommendations were also made. Public debates on sexuality and teenage pregnancy must be initiated. These can teach the youth in a very dynamic and interactive way, so that they learn about the dangers of the out of school participants become part of their learning process. Youth they must be encouraged to participate. The teenage mothers should be encouraged to go back to school after giving birth to continue with their education. This will only work if a policy is formulated to safeguard the young mothers in school from social ostrarchy and isolation. Due to ignorance, some teachers and learners have socially stigmatized such girls who chose to rejoin school and as a result they have had to terminate their studies.

- ItemThe Effects of Alcohol Abuse on Academic Performance of Learners in Selected Primary Schools of Kaiti Division, Makveni District Kenya(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of education, 2009-09) Kawyau, Richard MuliThis research set out to assess the extent to which alcohol abuse and consumption has affected learner's academic performance. It utilized the following objectives to guide the study: To assess the magnitude of the problem of alcohol abuse and consumption in primary schools of Kaiti division. To investigate the causes of alcohol abuse in primary schools; To assess the effects of alcohol abuse on the individual children; To investigate the challenges which learners face as a result of alcohol and drug abuse. From the findings, it was established that the causes of alcohol consumption and abuse were that it was ready available to the population since it was established that local brewing was one of the economic activities. It was also established from the teachers, there is alcohol abuse among children because of the influence by their peers as suggested by forty teachers. Also children consume alcohol because they observe their parents abusing it and then copy as contributed by thirty six teachers. The psychosocial effects of alcohol abuse that were established by the reachers aggression, guilt and shame, anger, short temper, low self esteem, sexuality problems, isolation and introversion. All these were suggested by researchers such as Mbweli, 2007, Berger, 1993, Cobbs, 1997 and Silverstein. The findings about this objectives indicated that according to teachers children affected by alcohol suffer consequences such as poor performance in classroom activities. Recommendation were also made. Guidance and counseling services need to be intensified to help the children already affected by alcohol cope with their circumstances, and also to reorganize their shattered lives. also the government should sensitize the society about the dangers of alcohol If possible a policy on mode of consumption of alcohol be passed to help regulate the way people take the substance. Those found drunk must be persecuted in the court of laws. This could make the people drink carefully.

Chapter bone with introduction, chapter two consists of the related literature, chapter three consists of methodology, chapter consists of data presentation and analysis and chapter five consists of findings, conclusions and recommendations. The study was descriptive an analytical in nature where purposive sampling was used to select population. It employed 50 respondents. Data was obtained from secondary using stratified sampling, analyzed and presented using frequencies and percentages and were tabulated. The major findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were females who were in secondary and below, peer pressure, mental illness and child neglect. Among the effects were less goal oriented, low indices of extracurricular, too many deaths, prone to diseases and infraction in brain. Among the recommendation include, creation of good learning environmental, increased teacher’s salary, continued assistance to weak students, and maximum discipline.
