- ItemAbsenteeism and Learners Performance in Siaya Central Primary School, Siaya District, Nyanza Province(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of education, 2010-12) Okoth Owino, VincentThe study was to establish the effects of absenteeism on learners' performance in Siaya central primary school in Siaya District, Nyanza Province, Kenya and the research was guided by the following objectives; to establish causes of absenteeism in Siaya primary school, and to establish the ways to reduce absenteeism in Siaya primary schools. The findings of the study showed that, there are a number of causes of absenteeism included age related problems, gender, learning disabilities, psychological problems, disintegrated family structures, food insecurity, child labor, transport, HIV/ AIDS, teenage pregnancy, difficult Subject matter, school fees problems, learner to educator ratio, learner educator relationships, competence of educators, punishment for late-coming and poor school facilities. The ways to reduce absenteeism included improving the competence of teachers, improve school facilities, improve educator -learner relationship, introduce regular 'spot checks' for specific lesson truancy, rewards for pupils or classes with regular attendance, and Penalize students who are persistently late. The research concluded that there was there is need to stop absenteeism decreases performance and therefore deserves attention. Based on the research findings, the following were the recommendations, that there is need for Siaya central primary school to introduce regular 'spot checks' for specific lesson truancy, rewards for pupils or classes with regular attendance , penalties for students who are persistently late and absentees, include absence data on teacher record to make the teachers fear absenting themselves unnecessarily as it shows poor reputation about them, put in place incentives programs that that will help to improve attendance such as good work conditions, time, equipment to enable good performance form both teachers and learners, and encourage good health as teachers who are healthy are less likely to fall sick which will make the teachers have time free from sickness to get more time to teach which will improve the performance the learners in turn.

- ItemAcademic performance and epileptic learners in inclusive setting in Migori zone, Migori district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2009-04) Amolo, Priscah AkinyiThis research was designed to investigate the academic performance of learners with epilepsy in inclusive setting in Migori Zone - Migori District - Kenya. The research was done in sampled schools across the zone. The finding of the research was as below; i. That children with epilepsy had children with epilepsy can learn alongside their peer with no epilepsy, most schools visited had children with epilepsy, which indicated that children with epilepsy get access to regular schools. ii. Most teachers have handled learners with epilepsy but with a lot of challenges. iii. Learners with epilepsy need a lot of care. That learners with epilepsy are capable and have the ability to learn given appropriate support and guidance. iv. Even though learners with epilepsy do not compete favorably with their peers with no epilepsy, they should be allowed opportunity to participate in curricular and co-curricular activities within the school and community so that they too realize their potentials as useful members of the society and to prepare them for future adult roles. v. There is need to train teachers on how to handle, manage and teach learners with epilepsy successfully. Teachers would then see the used to remediate lessons, vary teaching methods and even develop individualized education programme (I.E.P). vi. Epilepsy is mainly caused by brain damage due to trauma, accidents and a few cases through heredity and diseases such as meningitis and cerebral malaria. vii. Teachers should handle challenging issues regarding causes prevention and management of epilepsy. viii. Teachers should be encouraged to accommodate learners with epilepsy in their classrooms to avoid learners being over-dependent on others, be tolerant to the learners and allow more time to learners to complete activity.

College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Kamau, Seraphine W.The main purpose of the study was to investigate factors affecting academic performance of primary pupils at Lang’ata division Nairobi province, Kenya The specific objectives of the study were to determine; whether Discipline of students affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils, whether Quality of teachers affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils and to determine whether Facilities in schools affects academic performance of Lang’ata Division pupils The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students and interviews with the teachers The study found out that discipline was among the reasons why pupils perform poorly in class. It was established that pupils who are indiscipline were likely to perform poorly in school and also drop out of school and 45% of the respondents agreed to that. 75% of the respondents agreed that teachers who are well paid perform better than those who are underpaid. 89% of the respondents agreed that lack of enough reading and learning materials is a hindrance to pupil’s academic achievement. The study recommended that the government and policy makers should identify the reasons why pupils perform poorly in school and devise means to iron out the problem. Teachers should be included in plans to improve on the academic performance of pupils because they contribute greatly to the achievement of a child.

The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers and focus group discussions with the parents. The findings revealed that children from single parent families were likely to drop out of school, perform poorly in school, have emotional stress and involve in delinquent behaviors. The study recommended: that: The government and policy makers should take into consideration the problems of children living with single parents. The single parents should also be counseled on social needs of their children so that their academic work will not suffer at school. Children and their parents should be counseled together to help both the child and the parent

The national goals of education as stated in the Ominde Commission (1964) cited national unity, national development, individual development and self-fulfillment, social equality, respect and development of cultural heritage and international consciousness as the main pillars of national development. These goals are practiced in an inclusive setting as stated in the Salamanca Statement (1994), which stressed that every child has a right to fundamental education. The vocal point of the conference was the provision of education to children with special needs through inclusive schooling approach and to remove barriers so that all children can access education. According to Hegaty (1996), the first choice of placement for children with special needs education, should be a regular school within the community where visually impaired learners in whose regular schools have equal rights to education. There should be a provision of special facilities, qualified personnel, assistance from stakeholders, provision of resources and devices among others. However, the first choice of placement for children with special needs education should be in a regular school within the community. According to E. - ItemThe academic progress of pupils in primary schools, which have implemented free primary education. a case of Kyemundu zone, Mulala division, Nzaui district(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-11) Kimilu, Benardetta.M.Recent research statistics has shown that the free primary education introduced in the year 2003 had lead to a large influx of pupils into primary schools. Kenyans cannot afford to complacent about it, thus there arise an immediate need to conduct an investigation on the issue of academic performance on the influx of pupils. The study adopted a Descriptive research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the impact of free primary education on academic performance of pupils. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures. This report provides suggestions for more effective practice in the field of free primary education and measures based on the lessons learned from practical experience of the programme. - ItemAccessibility and relevance of the Kenyas education system to children with disabilities in Kipsonoi zone, Bomet District, Kenya(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2008-08) Tonui , JosephThe purpose of this study was to examine the relevance and accessibility of Kenya’s educational system to children with disabilities. The specific objectives of the study were to assess the relevance of primary education currently offered to children with disabilities, to explore the disability specific challenges of children with disabilities; and to investigate the constraints to the provision of educational service for children with disabilities. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to pupils, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that children with disabilities are faced with major disabilities and the education system of Kenya is not so favorable to the children with disabilities. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Education Ministry design special learning programme for children with multiple disabilities. Accountability is a process whereby one is required to justify his or her actions. This involves giving evidence that resources provided have been put to good use. And on this context, it must be seen from the promotion of education service when these resources entrnsted to people facilitate learning. A school has a person(s) entrusted with the responsibility of receiving human resource, finances and physical assets, putting them into use, overseeing the use and supervising their operations and activities. When meeting this responsibility, the human resource managers have authority to get evidence so that those being supervised are properly and efficiently utilizing the resources to promote academic pe1f01mance. Therefore supervisors require those below them to account for their activities. For instance a head teacher expects accountability from the teachers, in turn the school management committee or community and the DEO expect accountability from the head teacher and the CAO expects accountability from the DEO Kole district being a new district which has taken only two years now have been tiying to initiate total accountability to enable the promotion of education service in primary schools but the initiative has far not been subsequent. The study is rep01ied in subsequent chapters. The study was guided by three independent variables on accountability namely; Human resource, Financial management and physical against three dependent variables on education service as; staff welfare, budgeting, quality and quantity of the service. The study was set to answer three research questions formulated by the researcher. These included; How does Human resource affect education service in primary schools in Kole district? How does financial management affect education service in primary schools in Kole distiict? To what extend does the physical accountability affect education service in primary schools in Kole district?

In answering these stated research questions, the researcher used one hundred (I 00) respondents drawn from four (4) District Officials, eight head teachers (8), twenty eight (28) members of school Management Committee, another twenty eight (28) teachers from the eight sampled primary schools and thirty six (36) pupils from these same schools. The respondents were sampled using purposive and simple random sampling to participate in the raw data collection. The investigator used three (3) sets of self-administered questionnaires and an interview schedule. Since the study had been a descriptive, the researcher analyzed data and quantified them in percentages which made comparison realistic and very easy to understand. The result indicated that; The Human resource had the following contributions that attributed poor academic performance in Kole District. Among them were; teaching staff dodging lessons, inadequate teaching learning materials, unfrequented refresher some, teachers absenteeism, low level of NGOs involvement in education, negative attitudes of some stakeholders on education and lack of delegation of duties to staff by some head teachers• On the financial management, the study revealed that there were low level of SMC PTA in monitoring finance utilization, mismru1agement of finance resources, low level of financial managerial skills by human resource, audit done at the district headquarters and human resource managers failed to follow the set budget. The findings also showed that the physical accountability failed to promote education service in Kole District due to lack of enough TIL materials, shortage of staff houses at school, disputes in most schools and inadequate furniture delivered to primary schools
- Itemactors affecting writing skills of secondary school students in Kampala Central(Kampala International University ,College of Education, 2018-08) Ndagire, Justine HelenaThis was an exploratory study about the factors affecting the writing skills of secondary school students in Kampala Central. This was after the realization that the grades in national exams especially in rural areas were consistently not the best owing to poor writing skills. Yet, writing skills are a key subject crisscrossing both the sciences and humanities and as such it has far reaching implications for career development. The study specifically sought to achieve the following objectives: to identify the factors that influence the writing skills of students in Kampala Central; and to examine the ways of improving the writing skills of students in Kampala Central.To achieve the stated objectives, the study was guided by the following research questions: what factors influence the writing skills of students in Kampala Central? Which ways can improve the writing skills of students in Kampala Central? The study design took the form of a case study. The study also involved purposive sampling in which the data sought were qualitative. Sixty respondents were purposively selected for the study from six secondary schools. Each school was represented by 10 respondents who included five students and five teachers. The data were collected using interviews and observations for primary data and documents analysis for secondary data. The data were analyzed qualitatively through the literal description and narrations of the emerging issues out of which authentic conclusions were drawn.The study found out that writing skills are influenced by multifaceted factors that include remuneration of teachers, teacher training, external forc~s, workplace conditions, in-service training, motivation to teach and emotional factors. The study also found out that improving writing skills needs a multifaceted approach (e.g., by paying attention to the welfare of teachers [salaries and stipends]). The study concludes by noting that writing skills will for some time be of mediocrity not until the factors that influence performance of the teachers are redressed by the government, education planners and policy makers. The meçliocrity will continue not until those who wield influence and power realize the importance of teachers and education in nation building. The study also concludes that improving writing skills calls for a multifaceted approach that incorporates all stake holders such as teachers, parents, students, government policy makers and syllabus designers who should come up with a formula that addresses the plight of education and teachers in Uganda.The study recommends that the government, education planners, policy makers and other stakeholders should consider job satisfaction of teachers
